Ram-air parachutes: how they fly and how we can describe them
If you are thinking about buying your first main parachute, but don't know where to begin then this video is for you. Basic parachute terminology is something that every skydiver learns in their first jump course, but this video digs deeper to find out what makes one parachute design different from another. Also covered is different aspects of a parachute to consider when choosing one over another.

How to practice arching (neutral skydiving body position) at home

Arching does not come naturally for most people. Practice the neutral skydiving body poisiton at home with this step-by-step guide. We begin by standing up since it is simply easier on your back. Begin by finding space along a blank wall and then do the following: 1. Stand about a foot from the wall with knees slightly bent. 2. Lean into the wall so that only your pelvis touches it. 3. • @Skydivefundamentals
      @Skydivefundamentals 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! I like to emphasize “limp wrists” so that my students think about keeping a relaxed upper body. Many times body tenseness shows up in the hands and one of the hardest things to learn is how to stay relaxed in freefall. 😊

    Wish I had seen this before I started, I hated practicing the arch on the ground. I actually used an ottoman and laid over it facing the ceiling, but that was more about getting my 50 year old back to stretch more than strengthening the muscles!

    When you fed the long cable to the other side it came up through the bottom. Can you explain? Thanks!

    • @Skydivefundamentals
      @Skydivefundamentals 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This would be a much easier question to answer if we had a rig in front of us, but here it goes... 😀 The cutaway cables are inserted into metal housings that are designed to protect the cables and allow for a smooth extraction during a malfunction. If you follow the cable housing that goes to the reserve side, you will see that it passes through the yoke (behind the neck) and then down the reserve side mudflap. At this point the cable housing makes a smooth U-turn and comes back up the other side of the reserve mudflap. If this is too confusing, let us know and we will try to shoot a short video of it this weekend.

    Shouldnt the paracord be coreless? The one you linked to is 7-strand core.

    • @Skydivefundamentals
      @Skydivefundamentals 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you do want to use gutted paracord. We mention that in the video, but don’t show pulling out the core. Sorry for the confusion

    Nice to topic. Any questions how to find glide ratio of canopy?

    • @Skydivefundamentals
      @Skydivefundamentals 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of the time people refer to parachute's glide ratio comparatively. For example, saying that one parachute is "floaty" while another is "ground hungry." We can also notice a difference visually in our glide ratio when giving various inputs to our parachute while flying it. However, to get a number you need to know how much alititude you are losing over a given distance. You can approximate your glide path by flying a known distance (find 2 landmarks on Google maps near your DZ, perhaps) when the wind is minimal and note how much altitude you lose while travelling from one to another.

    Great video. I'm thinking about attending a AFF course in the near future. I don't plan on buy a rig until after my class A and maybe by then I'll get a chance to jump a few different canopies to see what I like. With that being said, do you think it's a good idea to stick to one brand with a low WL and downsize with that brand as my skills increase or start with a very docile canopy and move towards a different brand and better performing canopy? I was thinking about a safire 3 or sabre 3 and just downsizing either of those two. I hear they can be great beginner wings but with higher WL they can become really fun canopies.

    • @Skydivefundamentals
      @Skydivefundamentals ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting! "Para" is from Ancient Greek, but was also used in Latin. Since the guy who coined the term "parachute" was French, perhaps we should give the nod to Latin. 😀
