Come and meet the Whanganui Carillon! Installed on 21st May 1981, the carillon has a library of 12 songs and automatically plays through them on the hour between 6am and 6pm. The carillon consists of 18 bells, manufactured by Petit & Fritsen (c.1660-2014), donated as a traditional gift by Dutch firm P J Zweegers en Zonen to commemorate their new factory in Whanganui - their first outside of Eur...

    My dad and his cousins worked in the "factory" that made the bricks. They were slightly smaller than a hollow-stone block, and loaded into the tunnel off the back of trucks. And, according to him, there are a LOT of places that were left unfilled, because the Ministry of Works had a deadline and fell behind, so they cheated.

    Been into these tunnels back in the 90s back then there was a small hole in the wall at the Constitution hill entrance. The blast suppression area was intact then and not filled up with clay bricks, it was full of rusty metal, perhaps old bunk beds or seating. The unfired bricks that had been used to fill the tunnel formed a muddy slippery mess that we had to belly crawl over. There were large chunks of original roof that had collapsed and it was pretty hard going. We made it a good way along that tunnel, before the consensus was that it was too dodgy to continue as the crawl space became narrower due to collapse. I regret not finishing the adventure but didn't wish to do it on my own.

    At a time when the Albert tunnels could have been used to create a transport hub connecting the existing Auckland Railway station to the CBD they were given to control of a private developer to become some sort of theme park. Meantime an underwater site was chosen downtown and a huge whole was dug. That resulted in a massive power blackout the cause of which quickly disappeared from the news as politicians and bureaucrats covered their arses. Now the "old" railway station has been repurposed as a slum. And some people made a boat load of money. Ahhh! History.

      @@user-sn1qx1tm4l yes I've covered that in another video. And the tenor is 20-0-6. We're not sure where 17-2-0 came from just recently. This is my home tower, I'm quite familiar with the bells here. Originally all of the bells were Warners, but the 2 & 4 had to be recast in the 1970s by which point Warners were closed, so Whitechapel did the work. Taylors now do the inspections when in the country.

    It is kind of weird looking at old Melbourne W Class trams that I used to travel on in another country. I am sure they are being well looked after.

    • @spil030
      @spil030 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think they are - at least as well as can be. Of course, if money weren't an issue and there were all the workers available, they'd be able to have a overhaul, new paint work, shiny bells & whistles, and preventative maintenance on an extremely frequent basis. I'm not involved in this, but I understand the team are mostly volunteers and have been bogged down with a couple of big restorations which have prevented them from spending the time they'd like to keeping the current fleet of NZ & Australian trams in the condition they'd like.

      Kia ora Rohan. I can't say I know definitively. You could try Graham Stewart's last book: "trams still around New Zealand" which has a good list of all the trams in NZ, including the Melbourne ones. Alternatively, the Wiki page for the W-class Melbourne trams has a list of preserved trams around the world: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-class_Melbourne_tram. In Auckland are 6: 321, 893, 906, 1032 at MOTAT, and 852 and 881 at Dockline.

    Why need three tracks under the tram?

    • @spil030
      @spil030 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's because the tramway here is dual guage. The Auckland and Australian (Melbourne) trams are wider than the other trams, so they use the outer rails, and the narrower trams from Wellington use the inner rail. I'm glad that there is only two sizes otherwise it'd be a lot more complicated! As you can imagine, this causes a problem at the points, and is possibly a video I could make in the future.
