Receiving images from the ISS, the setup I am using
At time of recording this there is an SSTV event on the ISS, 40th anniversary of amateur radio in human spaceflight, and I have been receiving the images since Monday.
So far the images haven't been super quality as I don't have a beam antenna of any type available to use, just verticals.
You can easily do this yourself very cheaply in fact, a cheap Baofeng and a phone held to the speaker during a pass can work, you just need pass prediction software on your phone.
My setup is SDRConnect as I am using the SDRPlay RSP1B, QSSTV, my main mixer, a SoundBlaster Live 24-bit USB sound card and the onboard sound card in the computer, antenna started as one on a pie tin low down on the windowsill, it is now replaced by a flowerpot antenna that is mounted higher up

A brief demonstration of two virtual machines on my laptop for radio programming
มุมมอง 4414 วันที่ผ่านมา
I set up a virtual machine running Windows XP the night before I filmed this, the following day I went through the motions of setting up the Motorola programming software for the GP340Ex on the XP virtual machine and also setting up an Windows 3.1 virtual machine for the Motorola GM350 radio programming. The audio on this is not as it should be because I have had to use a mobile phone headset p...
Antenna placed outdoors for SDR use

with me not being able to do much filming while the local constabulary still have my recording equipment as it was in the car at the time they took it, it is still pretty difficult to get content out. I have put this antenna outside to receive transmissions with the SDRs, currently it is receiving transmissions within the 433.92MHz allocation for low powered devices, so far it has been mainly T...

New laptop for out and about video editing, SDR use and radio programming

I picked up this Lenovo laptop from Cash Converters for around £140, it is a used machine, originally supplied with Windows 10 but because I really can't stand Windows I removed it as soon as I got the laptop home potentially voiding the warranty Cash Converters have supplies the machine with. Chirp, Gqrx, Kdenlive and OBS are all installed on this machine ready to go. It runs Debian 12 since i...
Testing a repair made to the PTT switch built into my car for the FTM-400XDE
มุมมอง 622 หลายเดือนก่อน
Yesterday (1st September) I found a fault with the built-in PTT switch for my FTM-400XDE where the switch was not putting the radio into transmit, I reterminated one wire and checked other soldering after finding the fault as it looked like the wire in question may have broke, I suspect this happened while the car was in the garage undergoing MOT testing and associated repair. It appears to be ...
Coming up on the channel and the inside of the safer Baofeng BF888 drop-in chargers

A package arrived from Temu today, it contained 3 radios in all, 2 BF888s and a Baofeng BF-UV68P-M which appears to have a similar connector to the Motorola GP340Ex that I have, but it isn't identical, a "repeater" cable and a speaker mic along with a new portable desk tripod (which was used on camera 2 in this video) and a set of trim removal tools for the car as I need access behind a panel i...
a dismantled DOA Motorola GM350

Possibly a project for me or possibly scrap which I hope not, I took delivery of this untested Motorola GM350, and since it arrived it hasn't powered up and I cannot see an obvious fault To remove the board required removing a lot of screws and gently lifting it up as the power output transistor and a couple of other parts were attached with heatsink compound (I have some PC heatsink compound t...

Great stuff Paul, I'm parked just down the road from you watching this at Coneygarth truckstop 👍
Cheers Paul. I didn't know this was on 😳 Thanks for the heads up and for the how to 🤜🤛
No problem, ARISS normally give notice of these SSTV transmissions on social media and their website so always worth a look to see what they have got planned though sometimes their plans can change quickly depending on operational activities being carried out by the ISS crew or spacecraft arriving and leaving which can involve the Amateur radio equipment being turned off to allow these things to happen
I think you need more tabs Paul. 😊
Well done Paul, good stuff mate. I'm glad your still doing a bit as i was wondering how your getting on?
I've never heard of this program 🤔 Look forward to your next video, Paul. Hope all is good on your side. Take care.
@@TRIPPLEJAY00 rtl_433 is open source and comes with most Linux distros, I have since swapped the SDR over to the SDRPlay RSP1B which has wider coverage though doesn't work with rtl_433, all is sort of ok at this end but I am still of course struggling with the aftermath of the accident and also stuck waiting for the next course of action from the police, maybe next week I will hear something, maybe not, these things take too much time
Had a chuckle at the fray bentos tin groundplane. 😂 I think you might get better results with a dipole though.
The tin made me giggle too 😁
Hi Paul that’s really interesting stuff you’re doing thanks for sharing hope you’re doing ok 🙂👍
@@M6JKW Yeah, doing as best I can given the situation, it will get better in time though
Good to see you doing your thing matey. Hope you like your SDR. I got the R2 a month ago and love it.
Yeah, had this particular SDR a number of years, I also bought the SDRPlay RSP1B from the National Hamfest but I have yet to set that up properly with that computer
Hang in there mate, I'm sure things can only get better 👍
Nice one Paul, nice to know your still having some fun with stuff. 👍👍
I need to if I am being honest to keep my mind off the accident, fortunately I am getting help to deal with the mental issues from the accident so that I can cope somewhat, spent a lot of time playing games on the phone as well but I have to take a break from that too as that isn't going to do me any good
the water dummy-load in the background 👍
This avaible on Windows ? And do I need the full kit of the rtl sdr for this working ? Thanks !
@@swlradioman just needs the rtl-sdr and an antenna connected to it and the welle.io software which does run on Windows as well as Linux, hope that helps
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNU Thanks !
You're doing your best mate, that's all we can do. Hope it gets sorted soon.
Wrecked your Car?
@@deenunya7735 I can't disclose anything further while the police are investigating the matter which includes checking my car to make sure it has no major faults that could have contributed to the accident which is unlikely because it passed an MOT in July and was stood for a while before I got it back
Hope you start to feel better soon Paul I didn’t know you were in an accident :(
@@M6JKW yeah, a horrible one as well, I did put a post up about it which I guess you haven't seen, I can't say too much about the accident except to those that need to know about the full details, I have been signed off on the sick for a month but I do not see me recovering from it for a very long time
Hi Paul, glad your keeping yourself going! All the best mate.
Respectfully - how do you expect the antenna to work if there was a break in the shield of the loop ? Of course there should be continuity. If there was a break in the loop, then it would work the same as having only one side of the loop connected to the capacitive match box - it won't work at all. And the box you removed is simply a common mode choke - to stop common mode currents from coming down your feed line. Gosh, so many clueless comments in the video that it hurts my head. I stopped the video, I cannot watch anymore of it LOL
what should be considered here is this antenna is from a Chinese outlet and with those outlets the case is always buyer beware, this antenna has since had an adjustment made to it so it will work on 27 MHz and thus possibly 10-metres as well, the continuity check is more of a sanity check because again this is a Chinese product and who knows what they used in it, since this video was made, which was some time ago now, I've explored the thing much further but have yet to do any major follow-ups on it, which right now is somewhat difficult due to the circumstances I am in right now
I see you're wearing the free to all the gullible idiots Yaesu hat.
Great day Paul, very pleased to meet you 👍👍👍
I wonder if the sheer number of people with phones there yesterday had anything to do with your streaming issues 🤔 Looking good today though 😁 Enjoy 🤜🤛
@@EveryUserName possibly, I did change a couple of settings on my phone's portable hotspot

Ok, so how do you have your mic connected and what mic?
You know what, this actually makes me feel like getting my sdr dongle back out again. I've had it lying around in the drawer for ages, as the software I got with it was ... sketchy ... and I lost interest very soon. That software looks good. Cheers Paul 👍
