Day in the Life as a Medical SLP / Dysphagia Evaluations / Workday / Swallow Studies / Healthcare

Another peak into an average workday as a hospital-based Speech Pathologist. Spent the day evaluating patients to eat safely! I had an MBSS (Modified Barium Swallow Study) which is a moving X-ray swallow study that allows us to objectively measure someone's swallow. The healthcare system I work for follows IDDSI guidelines. IDDSI is the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative. I...

What is the pay ??
Is it possible to work three 12 hour shifts in SLP
😊
Mmmm monometer 😂I could only think of the muppets song mmm Manamana but to monometer
Thanks for your videos, they are v helpful. What percentage of my week would I expect to be doing client facing activities versus report writing tasks as a speech path? Thanks in advance for your reply, it's so hard to find specific information like this online.
Do you have any more videos after this?
Hi! Any idea how can I obtain the snack guide food chart?
Is it enough to study bachelor in speech and language therapy to work at hospitals??
Post more videos please
SLP grad student (starting in August) here! I have polymysoitis and thankfully am on really great treatments - but I just am interested in the medical side and WHAT A COOL COINCIDENCE!!! I had very mild dysphasia when I was at my worst and it’s so wonderful I can help people just like me one day!
I love your smile. It's so infectious! Thank you, Kelly!!
I love your videos. Keep it up!
You are so sweet and knowledgeable! please make more videos. I hope all is well the last 2 months :) I'm taking my prereqs for slp school and I can't wait to join the profession
these videos are so helpful!! thank you so much!!
Hey Kelly! Thank you so much for your awesome blogs! Would you be able to share how long you’re at work? Like what are your shift times or how many hours a day do you work? I am so interested in the Medical setting but worried that I will have to live at whatever hospital I find a placement at 😅
I also ran the Miami Marathon this year and the heat was brutal 🥵 It’s a great story to tell! Congratulations!
I’m glad you made it home safely!
I’m starting grad school in the Fall. Thanks for your vid!!!
From graduating with a BS in Public Relations and a minor in ASL, I've always been interested in being an SLP. Now being in the 'real world', I'm trying to decide whether or not to get my MS in SLP. This was so so helpful in what the future would hold. Keep doing these, they help so much! thank you thank you :)
Another PR grad who is considering SLP masters. 😅
Awesome video Kelly! You mentioned you switched to a new hospital, would love to here why you made the switch if that’s something you’d be willing to share! :)
I'm trying to get into graduate school for SLP. It's great seeing what a Medical SLP does on here! Thank you for posting this video!
Is there any difference between medical slp and slp...?? Or do they mean the same?
medical slps just work in hospitals or rehab facilities specifically! comparable to when doctors specialize in a specific area
@HooriaAkhter......pretty sure they are the same just in different settings working with different types of people
@@doggy2630 what's the pay difference like?
I love your videos Kelly! I'm in school for SLP right now and I go to USF while also volunteering for BayCare (love their beautiful hospitals lol)! Do you have an instagram or anywhere I could reach you to ask a couple questions about the medical speech pathology setting?
I love your videos. I see you as an example to follow one day. I have 1 more year left to finish my B.S. in communication disorders and I will continue to do my master’s right after I’m done. I can’t wait to become a Medical SLP 😊 keep sharing your knowledge ❤
vote for more training material pls
you are one of the first youtubers i began to follow which def increased my interest for speech pathology. at first i changed my mind and thought maybe ill just pursue ultrasound tech but i just knew that wasnt my passion. i am here to say now that i have applied to the pre speech program at western kentucky online. hopefully when i get into that program after i will apply to their masters program (: keep up the good work
As an SLPA this is a great field to work in whether you serve peds or adults! I also plan to get my masters soon✨
Another awesome video! Thank you Kelly <3 sorry about the ring, my suspicions also point to the gloves. As always, you make really great points. I appreciate you talking about the tough topics like end of life care and comfort feeding. Geriatrics need a lot more attn and love. I'm also curious as to how you manage so many MBSS! Do they take a lot of time to analyze? I'm curious as to how quickly you have to analyze them and then report the findings and your reccs to the doctors and nurses. I would feel so overwhelmed!
Omg, yes - I’m too terrified to wear my actual wedding ring to the hospital lol. Silicon bands only! 😅😅
How difficult is it to get hired in a hospital?
Do you only do evaluations?
I will be a medical slp next year ❤
Dude even finishing that race is a crazy feat! That is not even fair of an experience for a marathon - that is so terrible! I have run a few marathons and half’s including New York and train with a team of marathoners, definitely that was just terrible luck with the weather and has absolutely no indication of your fitness- it sounds like you are super ready to rock a marathon! If you are interested in another marathon where you are trying to make a time goal I highly recommend the Eugene Marathon!
Oooo! I will definitely look into the Eugene marathon! Thanks
Did you get engaged?!! I saw the ring hehe. I'm so sorry it didn't go the way you planned, but proud of you for running 26 miles. I just ran my first half marathon on Sunday and I couldn't imagine that being my halfway point! You're amazing Kelly!
Haha! Yes, I did get engaged!!! Good catch 😂 Congrats on your first half marathon!! That’s a huge accomplishment!
I ran my first 1/2 marathon last weekend and the week before I was sick and the day of still a little sick. I felt like my training was a waste but none the less it was fun.
Just means you’ll have to train for another!!
I am openly trying to persuade people to not run it
It was a battle out there!
I've been anxiously awaiting this video! Congrats on your first marathon!!
but also....we did it!
retweet to all the above
no one believes me when i tell them after every run down here i cannot use my phone it's useless till I get home to a towel
Vid not downloadable??😢😢
NOT THE BARIUM SHOT hahahahahah gorrrlllll we love you --- also love the clock cup
You were so patient with the hospital staff going with a diet without consulting you OMGGGGGGG
what's your weekly schedule like? how long are your shifts?
I work Monday - Friday!
Despite our weather woes, such a fun weekend with you all coming into town! Saturday morning hang was ideal Saturday morning! Love you guys so much, come all the time and stay with me!
Love you bug time, Anna!!
Let’s repeat Saturday morning hang every week
You are amazing!!
woohooooooooooooo
OMG KELLY CONGRATS 🎉🎉
I love that you’re an energetic SLP who likes to train because I am a marathoner/distance runner and I’ve wondered if SLP would be a good career for me or honestly if it would too boring (don’t know much about the field but your channel is showing me more about it so thank you!). On running- I prefer to just use pants with pockets over a belt but that is not for everyone. Also my favorite pre-run snacks/fuel is a banana or apple sauce pouch because I also do not have time to cook and that’s so easy to grab. Great work on getting that training in especially also taking such good care of your fueling and such!
I want to try apple sauce pouches as a pre-run snack! Lots of people love them!
how many years does it take to be SLP? from 4-year college program
4 year bachelor degree, then 2 year master program
love these videos its really making me excied to pursue this career
