Optimus Windshield Test
Does an Optimus windshield make that big of a difference to boil times for isobutane burners? That is the purpose of today's test.

I wanted to test the Simple Theory Gear Pack Stove with wood pellets. I have had success with this in the past, but lighting the wood pellets has often been frustrating. In this video, I attempt to light the wood pellets by using coconut oil. Stove purchased from: www.simpletheorygear.com/

    Just curious, how well do you think it blocks the wind with the BRS 3000T stove? That stove tends to be very wind sensitive. Recently out backpacking I had a couple nights where the stove would barely heat the water at all. That's mainly why I want it. It seems like it wasn't super windy when you did your tests. My concern is the BRS stove is relatively short, and there are a bunch of vent holes at the bottom of that wind shield. Does it let a lot of wind through, or do you feel this thing blocks the wind pretty well?

    I’ve been carrying mine for a couple yrs now. I think it is worth it. Pot is msr titan kettle with a pocket rocket 2 and small canister. The screen fits around and very compact. And light. Also works with gsi stainless 1.1l boiler. I’m happy with mine

      does canister top gets too warm or hot at any time using this windshield?

    • @GuyonaMoose

      @@vvs3796 it warms it up some but I’ve not an issue. Works to advantage below zero but the whole design is no good in very cold. Need

      @@GuyonaMoose yeah, obviously in very cold, systems like msr reactor would be working OK only. I had some doubts using this windscreen, as any wi dshield around gas canister not recommended, and I did notice on my tests it can get little hot. but I guess in the wind and for just boiling 2 cups should be alright.. thanks..

    The Optimus screen makes the BRS 3000 T stove run too hot to the touch (can't hold the knob to turn it off) AND it really heats the canister itself. The main reason is, its very short and the flame really heats the windscreen itself. Primus used to sell a similar poduct, they had to recall and discontinued it because of the risk of the canister exploding... I use the windscreen now with my Jetboil Stash (tight fit) without any issues.

      Hmm, have just ordered a Stash and was wondering whether this windshield would be a good idea. I see it weighs 80g though so it would bring the Stash system to 300g including stabiliser legs - not so much less than my Minimo which is ok in wind - plus a gas canister of course. I’m also thinking that the windshield might get in the way when I light the stove as I lean out of my tent. Perhaps I need to use the Stash for a bit to see how wind blown it gets…

    • @eldiabolico3750
      @eldiabolico3750 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petergilbert72 if it’s windy get the Optimus screen. The only negative is that the folding “legs” of the stove touch very so slightly ihe internal walls of the windscreen but we are talking tens of a millimeter causing some very light marks (you can avoid that by installing some aluminum foil sticker in that specific spot). The windscreen does work when windy as the Stash’s has a larger than usual (ex. Soto) gap between the burner and the pot and the flame gets blown away. It’s not nearly as bad as with the BRS but still noticeable. I tried it in bad wetsuit incl. rain and it did its job, no interference when lighting it up whatsoever :)

      I use the BRS 3000T as well, one thing I will say about it is it normally is too hot to touch the knob, wind screen or not. But the fact you say it heats up the cannister is what concerns me. Guess I'll have to try it and see how it works for me.

    Scrape some Esbit powder off the tablet to light it easier. I use them sometimes for heating up some water for cocoa or soup. I have tried alcohol (Trangia or Fancee Feast stoves) with better luck. Canister stoves are hard to beat but still do white gas sometimes

    Great review and measurements, thanks a lot. The only unclear for me how much excactly water you are boiling, 500ml ?, 2 cups could be different. Thats is useful for comparison of msr reactor I have and is it worth the weight for 12 days solo trekking. Also it would be great to have the windshield made from titanium.

    Does that bottom plate come out?

  • @simpletheorygear
    @simpletheorygear 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To begin, absolutely excellent video! In all honesty, I do not think it is the Esbit at all but rather either the setup with the Pack Stove or one of the many variables that present themselves with the outdoors. The former is something that we have worked very diligently to remedy. Two issues: 1. The original ring sinks a bit of the heat. 2. The distance from the cube and of course the heat funneling matters a lot. In the Lixada, besides enhancing a chimney effect, my guess is that the pot is 1 inch to 1.35” or so above the tab. This provides a much better heat dynamic and maximizes the thermal band. Both the original plate and speed plate (as it is) provides a close proximity, but not the “sweet spot” as would be preferred. If against certain variables, say colder water at start, as your test showed , it will heat the water but has issue bringing it to 212.. The new “elevated plate” we have developed, ensures a better heat flow and distance, and thus solves this issue. I would love for you to test these prototypes and provide your feedback so please send me your address via email and I will send one your way.

      Thanks for the response. I love the pack stove and have been taking it on most of my day hikes and will probably continue to do so until I am too hot after a hike to want a hot drink/fire. Still waiting to get out and do a longer trip. Plan on heading your way and get to Manistee and Nordhouse this summer.

    Justin, thank you so much for the wonderfully presented walkthrough and Pack Stove showcase! This is truly an excellent video and shows the actuality of using small twig stoves. Funnily enough, I honestly had a similar issue about 3 weeks ago with wood I would have sworn was dry. Every single time I tried those pieces the fire went out ... maddening. Anyhow, thank you again for the video and I am eager to hear more feedback in the future. Be well!

      Thanks! I Have used this about 10 times since it arrived. I am quite happy with it and glad I purchased. I am still deciding if I am going to use this when backpacking, or just my morning dayhikes with coffee. Daughter has been enjoying smores after our bird watching hikes after I make my coffee, which is something I didn't want to try when using alcohol or examine stoves.
