Is Morrowind Better than Skyrim?
If you're reading this, the title and thumbnail are totally clickbait. This whole video is more about discussing the shortcomings and shortcuts of and made in Skyrim (and to a lesser extent, Oblivion) due to a trend of simplification and obsession with accessibility in the gaming industry, which Bethesda is not exempt from.
Sorry about the bit rate by the way, I think I just figured out how to fix that. Big thanks to a buddy of mine (whose channel I will link here if he ever uploads) for loaning me his microphone for this video while I've still got a headset mic and helping set me up on DaVinci Resolve when Vegas Pro died on me and made me restart this entire project.

    not to be a total nerd, but if you play paradox games, i'm generally on the side of the imperials because to be perfectly honest, the stormcloak faction has the problem of "low party popularity" or "low happiness". not to mention how vastly lacking they are in agricultural output. as far as their allies go... dawnstar is a port at best, and a disjointed hamlet at worst. even if we size up the village to more realistic proportions, dawnstar is ruled by miners and sailors. none of whom have any ties to the very unpopular jarl skald, besides being permitted to operate. consider who has more to offer these people? a continent spanning empire, or racist ice farmers? solitude is even a closer and less icy trade partner (with more food too). winterhold is a shadow of its former self and barely counts as a hamlet in its current condition. sizing up to account for some level of realism, they have mines, but no real ports. best you could do in the sea of ghosts is lil fishing boats. both the above "cities" are at best colonies of whoever can give them the most money. the only difference is winterhold is probably ideologically closer to the stormcloaks, and is nowhere near as divided as dawnstar would be. riften is... riften. it's a port on a lake, atop a plateau, at the intersection between 1 or 2 routes out of skyrim through narrow mountain passes, 2 similarly narrow routes down to eastmarch, and 1 narrow mountain road towards helgen. unlike the above cities, riften can actually stand on it's own two feet, possibly even as a province if the soil is good enough. plus, as the home of the thieves' guild, i feel like the only reason riften is joined with the stormcloaks at all is because of the personal ideology of jarl law-giver, with *tenuous* supporting factors. then we get to windhelm, which... first of all, i'm surprised hasn't already exploded into revolt on account of the fact that their docks are solely run by argonians (who all sleep in one room mind you). it gives me "company town" vibes, because i think they can still buy things, but they live... *at work* and they buy everything... *from work*. this isn't even touching on the grey quarter. you let the argonians live as corporate slaves to the lords of your city, but the dunmer get to live inside the city, in a ghetto which they basically don't leave unless it's as house slaves (i imagine the elves from dragon age). what's worse? a nord war hero is sympathizing with them. overall, ulfric has the following: ▪︎ a port with a few mines, where no one likes the jarl and trade is essential to growth (in an ideal world, they might be able to farm enough for their population, but i doubt). ▪︎ another few mines, where people are pretty much unified in their conviction, but they're currently crippled from a natural disaster and produce *maybe* enough to feed themselves. (mages are pretty much out of the question because nords are like "ew- fantasy"). ▪︎ a flippant den of theives that doesn't need them and could turn at any point. (riften also doesn't have much offensive power on account of all of its out-routes being narrow mountain passes. but you know where this disadvantage wouldn't apply? attacking downhill toward eastmarch.) ▪︎ one admittedly well fortified city with deep racial divides that *surely* wouldn't turn hot if the city came under siege. ye, sorry, i'm going with the imperials. at least they know what magic is (i like the mod that continues the civil war so you can fight the aldmeri dominion). edit: i didn't even touch on the fact that no matter how you run this civilwar scenario, whiterun, the biggest agricultural province in skyrim, will never under any circumstances become "core territory" for the stormcloaks, unless they politicize the companions (which... good luck with that), or jail/exile/execute the battle-borns. all of which would cause backlash among the populous whose houses you burned in order to usurp leadership. (just a note, i'm not chill with banning talos worship. i just think the imperials have a better chance of fighting back against this than the stormcloaks do, even if in the short-term their legal policy is a ban, because that doesn't mean anything. it just means you can't get caught.) whiterun is coded neutral with a lean toward the imperials, and this is guaranteed by the fact that war has to be waged in order for stormcloaks to stand in dragonsreach. i know the generic guards seem irrelevant when you slaughter them by the dozens and they respawn, but *technically* those are still people's sons, nephews, fathers, brothers, etc. that weirdo stormcloak sympathizer whose name i forget (the sour old man you put in charge if you kill the best jarl). he might be able to look past that, but i don't think the general populous of whiterun will. note: tbh, idk why i typed all this. i know someone's gonna fight me over it, lol. i'm just speculating about the geopolitics of a fictional world, don't mind me ❤

    As a verified Morrowboomer, I can confirm that even Morrowind itself is a simplification of Daggerfall. TES III is the best overall, but mechanically Daggerfall was broader in terms of character build scope.

    7:35 lol what kind of cinematic shot is that. It went right through dock post. lol Morrowind wins out due to the DnD aspects. Its left more to the imagination. When you swing and nothing happens. We can just assume dude dodged it or your swing was so ineffective you wacked them with the equivalent of a pool noodle. Another one is Spell Casting. Failing at it was good and raised the stakes of an encounter. And Spells were pretty good in Oblivion and I can appreciate what they wanted to do in Skyrim, but Skyrim was too easy. In Oblivion and Skyrim. The audacity to give you the most basic swing and hit mechanic and not even give you cooler combos as you level up. Nah. You swing just like the day you picked up the sword.

    i didn't know anything about Kenshi. I spawned, stole some things and ran away to the desert, the rest is history(my first character never died to this day). I think Kenshi isn't that hard, it just has an unforgivable world, so a lot of mistakes can result in dying. But using a bit of common sense you can survive most of the time, you will find that aside those mistakes there are others that will take you to becoming a lot stronger by committing them

      thing about the game is that if you want a good fighter character, he will need to be in dangerous fights where he will certainly most of the time get almost killed. only way to get high toughness on a character is to get beat up in fights. which will usually translate to get getting a second character that wont get into fights and will act a as a rescue medic when your fighter character gets beaten up.

  • @plebisMaximus
    @plebisMaximus 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I largely agree with you. You are absolutely oversimplifying and exaggerating to get the point across here and there, but generally we agree. What I don't agree on is the ancient complaint that you can do conflicting questlines as a character not built for it. I prefer the Morrowind system of hard locks and disposition loss too, but I don't agree it's the only way it should be done. You killing the Emperor as a loyal general of his armies is a choice you make for your character, you are actively shunning the roleplay when you do something like that. You CAN actually join both the mages guild and House Telvanni in Morrowind too, just as you can join both the fighters guild and thieves guild, but if you want to make choices like that, you're not approaching the game with the intent of playing a character making sensible decisions within the world of the game, you're deliberately choosing to play it as a single save one-and-done thing. Same thing in Skyrim, just because you CAN be the harbinger of the companions as a cutthroat thief with no honour doesn't mean you should. Obviously it's not "playing it wrong", games are art and you're making your own interpretation by playing it however you want to, but it is a bit disingenuous to refuse to approach Skyrim as an RPG and then complain it's not good as an RPG. If you play it more like you would Morrowind, making multiple characters that specialize in one area and do only the related quests, not only does equipment/spell scaling matter less, as you won't be hitting those level 80+ highs, but it also just starts feeling like a more connected and cohesive game. Of course, then other criticisms start popping up, like the game heavily hinting you should play it "wrong", by having ambassadors of every major faction try to coerce you into joining at some point through the main quest, as well as the main quest itself being forced on you, but that's entirely different to just saying "Skyrim bad because I don't care to RP". Aside from that, I honestly don't think you went hard enough on some points, the dice based combat not only isn't as big an issue as people make it out to be, but I honestly prefer it in a lot of ways, makes you feel like your character is actually getting better. Going from failing half your basic fireball casts to nuking daedra with a single touch is so much more satisfying than just buying a new spell because shit, level scaling has left my current one useless.

    Eh, Morrowind is alright. Graphics aged poorly, gameplay is very RNG dependant, no voice acting is a huge L, variety of enemies is lacking.. list goes on. Didn't age well at all. Oblivion and Skyrim are more fun. NPCs in Morrowind are incredibly bland as well. Dialogue choices are always the same, so interacting with them is not fun. Having to click every bold word in a paragraph just to know where to walk to next is incredibly dull.

    Just finished my first playthrough of the main quest of Morrowind on OpenMW, and I loved every second of it. I tried Oblivion back in 2006 and I failed at efficient leveling and level scaling ate my character, so I gave up. I haven't given Skyrim a proper chance yet, because of my bad experience in Oblivion, but I'll get to it, eventually.

    Fallout fans have been having this exact argument for years, and time and time again people who prefer 1 and 2 are written off as "elitist" and "boomer" when we have just been upset at the direction Bethesda has gone. All the things you compared pretty much directly translate to the Fallout series verbatim. The older games had better world design, better rpg mechanics, better stories. Bethesda is just lazy and prioritize making money over making a good game, thats why I will never get excited over their games ever again. Modders truly are the only things keeping Fallout alive at this point

    I remember the first character I played when I was a kid. I made a pure mage so my character was painfully slow and squishy. I spent 2 hours crawling around before I ran into betty netch on the road. Assuming the flying jellyfish was a danger I had to deal with, I attacked it and my character died in 2 hits. I instantly fell in love with the game.

    A couple of tips: 1) a “safe” way to get decent stealing, stealth, and assassination do without cheesing the safe and restart is to find a downed enemy (preferably crippled so they can’t run away). Whenever they wake up, stealth and use assassinate. Once they start playing dead, pause and put something in their inventory before stealing it back (rapidly boosting thievery). Running around them when playing dead also boosts stealth. 2) whenever you remove a cyber limb while in combat, you character instantly plays dead. By doing this while surrounded by enemies and getting back up, you an rapidly boost toughness.

    The main character in ES3 is role played as a reborn ancient warrior who becomes god-like to overthrow the "false gods" that betrayed and killed him. I always told myself that that is the reason why the ES3 main character could make their own more powerful spells and items. Levitate, and be basically god-like. The hero of Oblivion seemed to just be a random hero, and Skyrim brought back a theme of special "blood line" or special power. As far as other gameplay changes, they were obviously trying to get rid of the vast amount of reading required to enjoy ES3 and make it more console friendly. The newer games are aimed at a larger audience. I personally enjoyed the ES games 3,4, and 5. But a return to complexity, story, and environment that ES3 had would be a breath of fresh air.

    The charm with games like morrowind is that there are big consequences to what you choose to do, important npcs are not immune. The game doesn't hold your hand. You can become almost as overpowered as you want to be, some potions increasing your strength to the point of shattering your own weapon after one swing. You can also be hated by npcs and they treat you horrible. Unlike certain new games that try to never offend people which leads to boring , soulless and carefully placed dialogue. Skyrim can be fun, but it could be much better and what kept it on life support for so long is the dedicated modding community.

    Fun fact: Even people that live in Vivec get lost according to them. Also worth noting, the Agility stat and enemy's armor factor also play a role in hit chance in addition to current fatigue and weapon skill. As for why bethesda implemented essential NPC's in Oblivion and Skyrim the way they did to make them immortal, it was done because the radiant AI had a habit of doing dangerous stuff, such as accidentally walking off cliffs or swimming in lava... Basically, the radiant AI is mentally retarded. also, you CAN actually join house Telvanni if you are in the Mages' guild. it DOES however affect your reputation in both factions a bit since they hate each other. (doesn't matter much though) Also you can only join House Telvanni in Sadrith Mora in the Telvanni Council house. Regular council members will point you to the council house. As for why levitation was removed, it was because of how towns are loaded. In Oblivion and Skyrim Towns are treated as interior cells. If you were to levitate over the walls of a down, you would be in a low poly version of said town without any NPC's and possibly collision. Bethesda removed levitation for this reason. In fact, they actually made up lore for it saying that the empire banned levitation. No joke.

    Unpopular opinion but Skyrim is trash. Full stop. It's the only game I've ever pre-ordered in my life. I had such high expectations because of the positive press and graphical fidelity. Oblivion was decent but a serious misstep in the wrong direction that I naively thought they would have corrected with Skyrim. I have never been so disappointed in a game in my entire life. The graphics were choppy and the gameplay was so bland, I blazed through it in a single play through and never touched the damn thing again. The fact that I can beat the entire game and rise to the top of every single faction on level 1 just as easily as I can at level 30 because the entire world is levelled to your character is probably the dumbest thing to ever happen to this franchise. In Morrowind you actually had to be cautious about where you went and where your character was at in skill or you'd get merked and the experience was so much richer for it. The increasing reliance on fast travel and a literal quest marker to every location you needed to go is one of the most tragic things to ever happen to open world games. I love the fact that directions in Morrowind amount to "ask around town for directions" and then "leave the city in a north easterly direction until you arrive at a large rock before heading west until you hit water". You actually had to put in the leg work which is what made the quests so god damn rewarding to complete. And the lore! Oh my god, the lore in Morrowind is so immersive. It's so easy to get lost in the history of the world. I actually find myself reading in game books to further my understanding because the world is so lovingly crafted and compels you to want to understand it on a deeper level. Fuck the increasing casual-lization of the gaming industry. It's the worst thing thats ever happened to it and Todd Howard can suck a fat raging corprus diseased dwemer cock for selling the soul of this once beautiful franchise for a quick buck.
