You can’t have a New Years without resolutions, yeah?
Happy New Year, kodan fans! I'm back with my resolutions for 2025. It is a tradition on this channel that I give you my plans for the year. But wait. The ochako seems to be a little skeptical about me coming back to the channel after Mr BG took it all over. So, did I quit? Is HCK coming back? What about Tenpachido Hall? And, did we get rid of Mr BG?! All of this plus an extra announcement at the end!

A Heian aristocrat gambles with a demon | Kodan: Ki-no-Haseo & the Demon of Suzakumon
มุมมอง 653 หลายเดือนก่อน
Adapted from Haseo Zoshi found in the Konjaku Monogatari, the story tells of Heian aristocrat Ki-no-Haseo and his game with the demon who lives inside Suzakumon. Mr. BG has only allowed us at Tenpachido Hall to show only half of the story. Truthfully, the other half is a little too spooky for TH-cam. It is like Japan's version to the Frankenstein story, but weirder. Check out the full version h...

The story of the Chinese zodiac is different in China and Japan? #hck
มุมมอง 795 หลายเดือนก่อน
Every year, I have my TH-cam community pick a story for a kodan for kids. This year, the community decided on The Great Race, a story that tells the order of animals in the Chinese zodiac calendar. When I went into my research for the story, I found two different versions, one told in English and possibly Chinese, and the other from Japan. The differences in the versions surprised me, so I wish...

1:07 not sure I agree with that from what I know we really don't know much about nara period clothing, replicas like this and what people often wear are more guesswork, the clothing for men showing here are pretty different than clothes that would have been seen in Tang, there's some artwork and statues around but they are pretty different than what people presume to the nara wear.
I'm so glad to have you :) happy new year!
I would love to hear about any events where Japanese culture changed. The tradition protection tradition protection loop makes change seem relatively hard compared to other cultures so it’s fascinating to hear where things ultimately did change and why!
You are going to absolutely love what I have in store. My research has been absolutely shocking so far!
Thank you! Is there an English version of the book on Heian fashiom, and where can i attain one, please?
I'm sorry. It's only available in Japanese.
@ks.kyokudonanshun Thank you. I just discovered, and subscribed to your channel. I look forward to your thoughts on Murasaki Shikibu's "rival" , the scandalous Sei Shonagon.
Happy new year :)
"Women were vicious to eachother" well this may have to do with patriarchy, maybe also translations influenced by the time it was written.. if people found our movies in 300 years, they could say " women were jealous of eachother" but it is just that these films are made by male not understanding a thing to women interactions ;) But for the rest thanks for the infos !
You could make that observation in any time period as you say. But especially the women of the Heian court were competing to be the next mother of the emperor in order to keep their family name on top, with Fujiwara having the most power. Tenions were high. It was the patriarchy, sure, who used their women as political weapons, but the women were equally aggressive. Fujiwara no Michinaga, the most powerful man in the Heian Period, had three daughters who had all become emperesses and all bore the sucessors.
Thank you so much! That was a delightful explanation!
Merry Christmas my Kodan Storyteller :) I will always want to hear the Tap Tap before I hear a story.
Thank you so much for your continued support!

おもしろーい! 勉強になりました!
Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy watching them and learn so much and also leave very entertained wanting to know more. Other than The Pillow book and Murasakis Diary are there any other Books you could recommend me about influential women of that time ?
Some other books I studied from are in Japanese. We also don't know much about the other women of Empress Shoshi's court only from what Murasaki says about them. If I remember correctly, Akazomeemon does have a Wikipedia page in Japanese.
@ Thank you ☺️ 🙏🏽
Do you know anything about Red Pond? Aikeki I believe it’s called in Japanese?
I am not sure. Is it a book? A place?
@@ks.kyokudonanshun It was a pond at the Toba Fushimi battlefield that was stained red during the battle from the dead and dying. It was a place that was avoided and rich in ghost stories, the pond is no longer there because of urban development. But the area of Kyoto that now covers it is called Aekeki.
@@trennonking5667 I'll have to look it up. I walked a lot of the battlefield from Toba Kaido to a very large horse racing complex that was next to a communal mass grave and on to the site of Kuzuha cannon fort on the river. I don't doubt the ghost stories. I possibly had one myself walking the battlefield.
@ Um do tell.
I read this book called "Culture of the four seasons" and now I am reading "Mapping courtship and kinship in classical japan" which mainly focuses on Murasaki Shikibu and Sei shonagon. You are great at giving me a better understanding of these texts ぉきに💚.
This is a great informative video thank youuu
Do they let a man dress in junhitoe or is it not allowed?
I have not found any evidence of transsexuals in the Heian court. In the present-day, I have heard of rental places not agreeing to dressing men in women's dress. It depends on the place. However, there is evidence that Heian Period women performers did and could dress in men's clothing items as a performance costume.
Your pronunciation and dictation is IMPECCABLE 😩💖
Gracias!!! Excelente video 😀
I did read "The Tale of Genji" several years ago. Regrettably my copy in Spanish by Xavier Roca-Ferrer is a comparative indirect translation from various sources in Western languages. I still have to read the Uji chapters. Beautiful prose, even if the translator did understand the story as a soap-opera. He kind of makes up when he basically tells us in one of his appendix that one of the most alluring finds of her book is that a lot of characters and archetypes to be found in later literature was written first by her. She prefigurates modern literature. When I reached the episode when Genji passes away, "Lost in Clouds" and found it was a blank page I fell more in love with the story: all that had to be said about Hikaru Genji and his visit to this world had been said... only the luminosity of the empty page lingers as a reminder that he existed, a moment to absorb what has been written and to ponder on that life that has slipped away. Then, as time never stops, Hikaru Genji must be left behind to proceed with the Uji Chapters. Also recommended is "The World of the Shining Prince" by Ivan Morris. Even if the scholarship is around 60 years old, it is still a wonderful read. Regrettably my copy of Sei Shonagon's "Pillow Book" was defective, and I have no access to Lady Murasaki's Diary, so I can't comment on them firsthand. If you want to linger in Murasaki's world and you don't mind modern authors doing good stories on it, I can recommend: * Liza Dalby's "Tale of Murasaki" where she creates a fictionalized novel on Fujiwara Takako based on her Diary (she believed that "Takako" was the real name of Murasaki Shikibu). * Marguerite Yourcenar (author of the "Hadrian's Memoir" <- recommended lecture!!!) creates a tale about the last days of Genji in her "Oriental Tales". Found that there are other traditions on the location of Lady Murasaki's Tomb. Please take into account that I am writing from the top of my head, Thanks for the Video!!!

Thank you for watching. Good luck in your studies.
Thank you! I'm researching to make a junihitoe for a fashion show, and this is very informative on the structure and background!
If you can read Japanese, definitely check out the book I mentioned as that has a lot more detail. The kimono I'm wearing is extremely abbreviated, but I do say in passing what all the layers are. Good luck on your fashion show.
This is super informative!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
So basically if i buy a katana in japan, ship it from the Japanese post office to the U.S., but they have to appraise it before it gets shipped to the us? Or is the appraisal only for bringing a sword INTO japan, sorry didn’t get that part
Only for sending to Japan. Check US import laws for sending to the US.
I just want to say you are a wonderful content creator and I love all your hard work bringing the magic of kodan storytelling to the world. I just really want you to be proud of what you have created, its taught me so much about Japan and how older societies operated. I love you dearly and wish you the best.
I have recently discovered a passion for lady Murasaki, I read the diary and now i am reading the tale of Genji. During the reading many question arose in my mind about her life and hope one day to visit Japan , her grave her monument in Kyoto her house.
So. is there any trace of Sugawara in Dazaifu today? I went there last year and didn't see anything about him.
I've only known Osaka Tenmangu actively preserving the life of Sugawara-no-Michizane. And Kitano Tenmangu has that scroll, but nothing else other than the ox. I have sadly not been to Dazaifu. It's on the bucketlist. From the pictures I've seen, the historic sites seem a bit small. But, since Dazaifu was not a happy place for Michizane, the history may be on the down low there. Looking forward to finding out, though.
Good job with the story telling. Very informative and my son found it educational. Thank you for your work.
Nice video
I am a teacher in Japan. I heard about this video from my coworker. I showed this video to the students, and they all loved it!

As a long time resident of Japan, I'm trying to import a family heirloom (civil war sword). So you mean the J. Gov. will NOT let me do it? There has to be some collectors here who have done it?
No. Maybe get a lawyer or a 行政書士 who knows about international law, but they may tell you the same thing. Good luck.

Once again I have to say that I adore your personality! Great video! I wonder if you have seen The Tale of Princess Kaguya from Studio Ghibli. That film takes place in the Heian period( I think!!) and it's just gorgeous. You can see the twelve layers of the junihitoe fall away in one of the scenes. Thank you for your wonderful videos!!
Thank you for your very kind comment. I have not seen that version. Taketori Monogatari, the tale which that movie is based falls at the beginning to mid-Heian, about the 840s. For nostalgia, though, I enjoy the Big Bird version.

MORE COMPLICATED??? is that even possible?
Green is my favorite and color and those greens are just stunning!!!
You mentioned forbidden colors for junihitoe in your video about that, are these the same colors forbidden here? Or were they different for men and women ( I assume)
I assume they are universal for men and women. Although, I have only seen green, yellow, white, maroon, pink... I'm probably missing some. Again, Murasaki Shikibu writes a lot about it with no help in the details. It could be women's forbidden colors are different since they dressed colors with seasons. But like I said, this is all Edo Period details for all we know.
I just discovered your channel a few days ago because I was researching junihitoe for a drawing I'm doing. and I'm obsessed with your personality!!!
