Making Zinc Hydrazine Nitrate - An Exotic Primary Energetic
Disclaimer: This video is not monetized (ineligible) and was made to document my findings.
Zinc Hydrazine Nitrate, or Trihydrazine Zinc (II) Nitrate, is an exotic primary energetic that is not very well known, unlike its pink counterpart, Nickel Hydrazine Nitrate.
In this video I synthesize zinc hydrazine nitrate and run some tests on it such as its sensitivity to friction and impact.

    great job. I would suggest using Freezer paper, it's lined on one side with plastic.. Roll it on a dowel as wide as it comes in it's box. Put the rolled up paper in the oven at 350 or so and cook it for about an hour. The plastic will melt, making a rock hard tube you can cut to length. If you move up to flash powder (chlorate powder) BE SURE to put a little hot glue on the end of your Vesco fuse that will go inside the device to seal it!! The sulphur in the fuse can sensitize the chlorate over time and the device can go off by dropping it. I have made aluminum powder (from aluminum foil) in a ball mill but have had it spontaneously light on its own by exposure to air so I use store bough powder from now on.

I was thinking about making some but the involvement of h2so4 doesn't really help since it's so valuable to the region where I find myself in. if you made yours, do you know if it is possible to make hydrazine sulfate using a sulfate like ammonia, calcium, copper, etc sulfate? As far as gunpowder/black powder, the words are not interchangeable, gunpowder is used for what people typically think of as firearms. Black powder is used for muzzleloaders and other firearm specifically designed for black powder. Two different chemistries, black powder and gunpowder are not interchangeable where firearms are concerned.

      hey, no worries! I tried that but couldnt get rid of the copper contamination. Zinc nitrate is clear in solution, whereas even small amounts of copper nitrate will contaminate it with a blue colour. I neither got ZHN nor NHN to detonate via friction or shock. ZHN barely detonates at all so I presume it will be safer than the already insensitive compound NHN For the synthesis of hydrazine, check out leonid lerners 'smallscale synthesis of laboratory reagents'. • @kitchen_chemistry
      @kitchen_chemistry 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gun powder is much more stable, and in this sense I use pressure released from gasses to make the "boom" sound. Flash powder is a 70/30 potassium chlorate to finely powered aluminum mix. It usually is mixed carefully by agitating the mix with paper. It can detonate when hit with a hammer and is much more sensitive to shock and friction. Sulfur will also cause it to detonate spontaneously (could take weeks). However, although its much more sensitive and dangerous, the mix is much louder. Sodium chlorate can be made by boiling bleach to dryness, and then you can use a double displacement to make it potassium chlorate. Aluminum powder must be ball milled or bought, although in some places its regulated. However, IMO i think its safer to make a primary such as nickel hydrazine nitrate, though now you deal with toxic chemicals. I have a video for that and its precursors

    Nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and charcoal create black powder. Which is utterly beautiful. (And this is in terms of alchemy, not modern science) The nitric acid imparts energy, and the sulfuric acid imparts heat. The charcoal is both a vessel (fuel source) and an accelerant. Accelerant? Yes. Or the opposite. The size of the individual grain of charcoal dictates the burn rate of these chemicals. Black powder is different from TNT, because it is a very HOT explosive. So if you want more power, you have a higher ammount of nitrogen in the mix. For more heat, more sulfuric acid. And the smaller the size of the grain, the faster it will burn. Just don't try to grind it once you combine everything. You grind the charcoal first.

    Hi Kitchen chemistry, Nice video and demonstation. I like the idea of the compound and of energetics based on reducing enegic complexes of metalic core and oxdizing anions. I did the pink NiHN (Ni(N2H4)3(NO3)2) precipitate a long time ago, aside with hydrazine nitrate and white Ag2C2.xAgNO3. To study similar complexes to NiHN, I did orange brown CoHN (Co(N2H4)6(NO3)2) precipitate what is very similar in behaviour; and I did manage to make the turquoise blue precipitate CuHN (Cu(N2H4)2(NO3)2); this last contrarily to its brothers is quite unstable and catches spontaneously into fire while drying; but a minute amount remained dry on the edge of the self-burned drying funnel; it burns fiercely green. As explained onto the Science Madness forum; the space of investigation of complexes is quite interesting, vast and unpredictable because a reducing complexant amine aside an oxydising anion is already often powerful; but things can complicate themselves because of the complexing central metalic core what is also often a catalyst. So NiHN, CoHN, ZnHN yes but CuHN is on the edge of existance. NiHN was proposed for dets in the past if its ignition was more regular vs Hg fulminate. It displays high performances like 7,00 km/s VOD and lead block test of 400 ccm/10g. It is sensitive under selfconfinement or if wrapped into Al-foil. I did circumvent some of its issues by admixing 1/2 to 1/1 pure white silver nitrate acetylide to pink NiHN. My first idea was to test the stability because hydrazine is reactive to Ag(+) with what it turns into black smooky foamy mud; and the mix is appently stable (friction and flame or impact was not tested numericaly but practically and chemically it was OK); so in conclusion the dry mix is synergetical because both primaries contribue to the other one and push the overal parameters up; while NiHN ensures high VOD and high volume of detonation gases; the SADS-SANC ensures higher impact and flame sensitivity for efficient D2D. NiHP is mentionned to be sensitive into solution but apparently it was made dry and handled on YT. Knowing its brothers Cu(NH3)4(ClO4)2, Cu(NH3)4(NO3)2, Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2 I would remain cautious with the perchlorate because both the copper salts exist (the perchlorate >> nitrate); the CuHN is on the edge of existance; NiHN exist and is powerful, but NiHP must be quite sensitive. The nitrate amino complexes were tested and are much less interesting energeticaly speaking than the hydrazino complexes (HANiN was tested aside TACuN and HACoN). Ni(AG)2(ClO4)2 (NAP - red) is powerful and based on aminoguanidine (H2N-)2C(=N-NH) and Ni(ClO4)2 thus related to hydrazine and guanidine complexes of Nickel. Regards, PHZ (PHILOU Zrealone from the Science Madness forum and Alt.engr newsgroups from AOL)
