I left practice today with a throbbing headache because she makes us sparr without head guards. If I lose, I disgrace my hall. I’m scared to leave, and I’m scared to participate.     I am learning kali from a friend who has 10 years experience and we finally finally got into some panantukan. I was excited to learn, but he taught me these kinds of 'simpler' movements but I was waiting for more flashy stuff. After I learned these and a few other things, we moved onto some dumog and the next thing. I was like damn, I wanted to know more! But now after seeing this, I'm like...hm yea... if I get in a fight or have to defend myself, these are the exact go to things I will be doing anyway.

    2:12... He gets hit in the ribs just before they cut it out. Also the practice partner said" i haven't done this in a while" this is the problem with choreographed arts or training. Its not natural when it comes time for combat. It is drills drill drills. Drills will get you killed as they are repetitious dancing in a set pattern.Everyone on the internet sees what everyone else is doing and copies it. This drill seems to be a theme in the last year or two on the net...shows people just copy each other.

    Hi there, I’m currently in a predicament with whether or not to leave my local Iaido class because over the 2 years I have been taking part in it, I’ve had quite the love-hate friendship with the particular instructor of that class who is of the 7th Dan qualification because he would take almost every opportunity there is to find something wrong with me whether it be the even most slightest errors in my moves during the Katas we have to perform (don’t get me wrong, you HAVE to get feedback from others about improving your movements even in the footwork because you often fly blind when using the sword in front of you or behind you - or for those below the threshold for metal Iaido swords, we use wooden bokkens which is where I come in - otherwise you aren’t going to improve your prospects in eventually getting the aforementioned metal Iaido sword, which is dangerous if you don’t use it properly, and getting through to taking part in formal tradings at Seminars hosted by the British Kendo Association (BKA). My main gripe is specifically with the way my instructor would give that feedback to me. By that, I really mean he would accuse me of not learning from the last time, which he would use to test my loyalty to see whether I am loyal to the class or not, even though I have always taken the time, especially if the weather in Scotland is good, to learn from what has been taught to me including doing Kata training in my back garden since it has the most space available to practice my moves and reading the small book to gain knowledge & tips from it which includes knowing the grading points of each Kata & various slangs of the sport. However, the disadvantage here is that I don’t have anyone to give me accurate feedback over my moves so that puts me in quite a predicament but I try hard anyway. With that being done, he would always use those opportunities of telling me off to accuse me of not listening to him and if I were to ask him any questions on subjects or tips which I might perhaps have forgotten but need to remember just like with any subject to learn out there, he would turn it into a struggle session to accuse me of not listening to him.), knowing what was revealed about the grading points required in each Kata, knowing each part of not just the bokken & saya but also the metal Iaido swords and even when it comes to saying how my week went & any good stories I had along with polite contributions to topics being discussed outside of training. He would take his topical discussion opportunities to rant on certain views about politics as well as religion (he has made unkind & untrue comments about Christians & Christianity a few times in the past, at one point linking them all to the cult of Jehovah’s Witnesses) even though he lectures us not to say anything about those topics as students. I have noticed he tends to treat the other students, both beginners & qualified groups, as well as other members of the general public including some politicians who took their time to visit the class in a much more different manner to how he treats me. What made me want to write this comment to you today was when he out of the blue asked us if we wanted to continue training in Iaido or switch to learning Kenjutsu after the summer break for the class ends at the beginning of August. I dared not raise a full objection considering what I said earlier but I did politely say we should still stick to Iaido to which he then said I should improve in my bowing in & bowing out sessions which I already was working very hard to improve on including via training in my back garden. I find it more comfortable to get tips & feedback from other students including more qualified students than the instructor himself, it’s that bad. Now taking the opportunity over the summer to check out some other martial arts classes in town, I wonder what is your feedback on what I have written and can you give me some advice on this? It would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

      @jrainey94 I think your instructor may have 1 or 2 ego issues if he is bringing his politics and religion into things. It would be interesting if you tested him for a change to see his reaction. If you were to take 2 months off and go back to his club you will be able to test his character right there. If he is hateful then you will know you have done the right thing by leaving, if he is welcoming you will know you have been missed. I know for a fact there are very high ranking martial artists in prison so these people are not gods.

      @@williamweb9782 Hi William, he doesn’t do it all the time but he does do it on some occasions. Whenever he does being those issues up, he never uses it to point out my flaws when it comes to my opinion on those matters but I did try to politely contribute about politics once when he brought something up a few years ago to which he then swiftly reminded me that nobody was to mention politics or religion at all. That is why I never ever respond to any comments he makes about those subjects. Whenever he talks about politics, he speaks about it right in front of the group before the sessions actually start. As for religion, I only ever overheard him on 2 occasions speaking in loud but otherwise private conversation with another member of the group who since left last year because she ended up with a broken arm in a separate incident. One thing that I suspect as to why he has a go at me, albeit it’s not exactly the no.1 evidence to prove what happened out there, is because he is friends with my mother on Facebook (I left Facebook in late-2018 in protest at the increased censorship on the site) and my mother likes to put out pro-freedom memes & photos from the anti-lockdown protests we have attended in Glasgow for the last few years so he might secretly have a disagreement with those views (given that he used to be a Health & Safety inspector for the MOD in Stirling). Then again, I can’t exactly prove that but just guess it. There was also one occasion last year when he begged us to attend an annual AGM the BKA held claiming, without fully showing us any hard evidence, that the BKA was going to cut funding to all local Iaido, kendo, etc, classes so we had to go on that AGM, upon this Instructor’s instructions, to vote against the leadership of the BKA in protest at these alleged decisions. I looked at the documents carefully during the AGM and found nothing of the sort that this instructor was alleging was happening, apart from Facebook comments he allegedly seen on the BKA’s posts which he did not show us. I’d appreciate some feedback from you on this but ideally the TH-camr here should be responding to this as well.

      @jrainey94 I have no experience in iaido but did experience a fairly nasty shotokan instructor. I was 20 at the time and was not ready for the onslaught when it came. Sometimes an older man picks on a younger man because he is a fairly easy target and the older man is trying to big himself up. In my opinion you have to make a stance somehow and be ready to back it up. Traditional Martial arts by their nature are very subservient. This plays into his hands. You have to stand outside these parameters. From a human point of view it is not healthy to be around someone who is unfriendly like this as you have indicated other people in the club are friendly. In this type of situation the students will not back you as they are looking after their own position in the club. All I can say is if there is a club meeting and he attacks you verbally in front of the club be ready, be aggressive, be spirited, be whatever it takes. The most important thing is to show him your spirit and fight him if that is what it takes. A 7th Dan who has no respect for you is useless to you. All the very best to you.

      @jrainey94 I do not like the way he is involving you in BKA politics either if you are a young man. Also if he knows your mother things are further complicated. My advice is to stay away from the club for a bit, (if he asks for a reason keep your answer so vague that it tells him nothing) clear your head and then reassess the situation when you get back according to the way he treats you. You have to reset boundaries with him. As well as this podcast I would also recommend a Michael Calandra podcast which is in a similar vein. I am also in Glasgow so can meet up if things continue to get on top of you. Best wishes

This material was created by Bill De Thouars who is the brother of Pendekar Paul De Thouars and learned nothing of substance and is a liar who claims that he is a Serak player. I can assure you he was never a Serak player of any kind, or a Silat/Kuntao expert. Bill was interested in making money through Silat and his brother's reputation, and just made stuff up.

    Not criticizing the demonstration of the movement. The movements look nice and I'm always happy to see Pencak Silat represented, just some remarks on the terminology because that seems to be a problem here in the west: 1. Jurus is not the plural of Juru. The word Juru doesn't exist. Jurus means movement and is both the singular and plural form. 2. Kuda means horse, and is not a word used for martial arts. It's "kuda kuda" and that means fighting stance in general and not a transitional stance as explained. That being said, enjoy your Pencak Silat training 🙏

    ahw man I have been looking for this. I saw the other functionalize panantukan video as well. I used to do FMA and I have been meaning to get back into it but there is no club near me. My old teacher is on yt as well but now that I know more about martial arts in general then back then, I'm less gullible I'd say and I see that the demonstration-friendly training style he employs is never gonna translate into practical self defense stuff. I love the panantukan and the silat movements, doing sneaky things based on biomechanics but if I'm gonna train it again, I need it to be practical as well. You are the first guy I see online that really emphasises that point. Thanks!

    Just a bit of constructive input: the techniques are fine but I’m not interested is using anything that looks like a knife, even if I’m just intending to just trying to stop aggression. If it looks to somebody, for instance, law enforcement, that I have a knife in hand, things could escalate quickly and maybe not in my favor. Still, it’s a legit tool to just blunt the offense without causing permanent harm.

      Thank you! I removed Sugar, Flour, and Processed foods first. Then lowered my calories till I started seeing results. When I hit plateaus I lowered my calories by 100 to 200 and then I kept the journey going. I went from 275 in November of 2022 to 150 October 2023. I trained resistance training twice a week, and martial arts training the rest of the time. Diet is the key. Sugar and Flour are craving triggers for me. Mentally, you have to make a decision to make a change and that it is lifelong choice, and you have to work at it forever. You can do it. The first step is to believe you can and you will.

    Hi, I'm gonna have to argue some points here. I've had a fascination with cold weapons and in that context I have trained some kali, krav maga and hema, no expert but I have a broad experience of different styles i visited here and there over the years. I always had the mentality of taking what makes sense and leave the rest and reverse grip was always one of those things I couldn't find a good spot for in realistic scenarios outside of the clinch, it gives a stronger grip, but that's the only advantage. Now to me, a blade gives reach advantage, a speed advantage because you don't have to transfer anywhere as much force and can then retract a lot faster. When you hold them reverse grip your range is severly limited, your attack angles are severely limited and require open and exposed movements and without a karambit, maybe hawkbill design your cut is extremely weak in the reverse grip. The one and only thing I found that worked really well with 2 knives was to run a clean boxers upper body style as it always positioned the tip towards the enemies attack angle when holding guard which scares the f out of people in practice, your arms are in a position that actually allows good reaction time with some natural preloading and the angles are good for stabbing at incoming attacks. Beyond that, when focusing on throwing clean boxing punches while holding 2 knives, reverse grip, the knife ends in natural, mechanically strong cutting angles when you hook and uppercut as well as limit an opponents opportunity to dodge by head movement when throwing straight jabs, 9/10 cases people dodge backwards to not risk catching the blade if they missjudge. So yeah, I am curious if you ever tried this?

      I have, and you are right those situations happen all the time on are battle sessions on Saturdays. That is through close range high pressure with no breaks in pressure. Why? Because there is no pain response. You should watch the video again. Please pay attention to what I said before I start showing the pattern. I said this is a follow up, which mean after you have created an opening with either pain compliance response through defanging the snake, or some pain compliance (Cut or stab) which creates a delay in them (break in attack and response). This creates a an opening for a pattern attack. The only way to get this response is through live blade. The closest is through shock knife training. The patterns are also to learn basics of how to master lines of attack. There are many lines including boxing structure. Thank you for the comment. I hope I make since. Reality is different than sparring and that has to always be considered when training.

      @@PINNACLECOMBATARTS I'm watching it again now, we learned a lot of similar counter attack to attack, disarm, distract or defang combinations in Krav maga as well, more weapon focused in HEMA. I only did sticks when doing Eskrima/Kali so it was more based on hand strikes and blocks into attacks as counters. I joined Kali because I felt the idea of a unified system applicable to many items made a lot of sense but when it comes to none hooked knives I just don't find it good anymore after having learned some fencing and things like dog brothers became a thing we could compare things to. I know the sequence and the short movement attacks intended for momentary distraction, at least empty handed. Or at least I think I am used to the exact thing your pointing out here. But it still doesn't make me feel there is any place for the reverse grip? See, every move you use when attacking in the reverse grip is either biomechanically weak or forces you to expose your entire midsection when swinging as well as taking the longest possible path to the target because of having to cock up/out the elbow and telepraphing your move like crazy. My point being, when holding 2 blades and focusing only on clean boxing until a clinch is forced on me the knives ended up naturally being useful in the reverse grip, the biomechanics were stable throughout but when contrasting everything outside of a clinch to the usefulness of a blade in say a saber grip it just doesn't make sense to me, you lose more than you gain, do you not? The only conclusions I could draw was that reverse grip loses me attack angles, range and forces me to use wide motions to attack, outside of the clinch I feel confident saying it's actually just worse? I would like to add a caviot that I believe it would be completely different if you were the attacker sneaking up on or rushing an unarmed opponent but I never train for that as I don't see a realistic scenario where I would do something like that outside of war. Oh, and as for the lack of pain response in practice I always used shiny, blunt aluminium trainers, they hurt like hell and people get a few injuries here and there but it did wonders for creating real fear of the blade in sparring

    This is really good stuff. In DC, if you strike someone in the Head, one may be charged with attempted murder. So, we have to adjust OUR techniques only using the arm, or hand, as a target. Excellent instruction Guro. Thanks much

    Very nice! I once took a hard elbow to the inner bicep while sparring. It caused a vein to rupture, making my arm numb and basically useless. Also resulted in the biggest bruise I've ever had.

      Well those are both training exercises to build attributes for certain types of attacks and energies that could take place in real fight. Just like Jiu-jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing, Judo, boxing clinch, est. are also types of engagements. Just tools in a tool box needed at the right time for the right solution.
