Last week I found a roll of Konica VX Super 100 on the flea market, which has expired in December 2005. I will try it out in my Praktica MTL 5 B someday. A few months ago I shot a roll of Kodak Gold 200, which has expired in 1999. This Friday I'll finally will know whether or not this roll held up after all this time.

Thanks for the memories. I am an old-school photographer. Taught Basic Photography at night school in the 70's and 80's. Bought my 1st 35mm Camera Kodak Retina Reflex III in 1962 at Hobby Lobby Camera Store in Detroit, It had a 50mm Lens, later I purchased 135 mm and 85-200 mm zoom lenses. Then going to Nam in the late sixties, I bought a Minolta SRT 101 SLR with the same lenses and a 28mm 85mm Lens. Took lots of pictures during the war there. In the summer of 1970, all the cameras and accessories in the Riots in Detroit in 1970. An HS friend of mine was shot by a friend of my dad's in a bar. He tried to hold up the place. The guy shot lay in the street for hours and died. 2 large hospitals were just 3-4 blocks away. Rioters broke in my parents and brothers home and the chief of police there told my parents and 4 brothers to get out of the house. That night they broke into the house again, stole anything of value, and torched the place. Bad for me as all my stuff, cameras, coin collections, pictures, and records were still stored in the house and lost. Pisses me off even today to recall it. Probably better this way. My Dad and brothers had several 12-gage Shotguns and other rifles. No pistols, It would have been bad...

You produced some good shots there. Nice. You did not spend much description on the focusing system - which is indeed an odd ball, while you indulged in compositional divagation that are unrelated to the camera model. I just got a model today, which I decided to buy before stumbling here. The shutter must have not been operated in a long time since it is a bit 'stucky' under the 1/30... it has the tendency to remain open. But by operating it several times, eventually the oil started lubing the parts again, it seems. We'll see what I can do from here now. In general, with those interlocking lenses and with that viewfinder - with a condenser lens rather than a ground-glass screen, with only that small central spot ground for focusing, the overall feel is that of being even more spartan than my Weltaflex.

The VSL1 was dead by Aug 1979. Rollei-Werke Franke & Heidecke the original Rollei company was dead in 1981. Rollei Fototechnic was formed and manufactured the Rolleiflex 2000f and the Rolleiflex 3000 series until they ran out of stock of shutters that had been made in the old Singapore factory before the collapse of Rollei-Werke Franke & Heidecke. Rollei Fototechnic did not last long and there have been a couple of companies after that. The 42mm screw mount version of the VSL1 was dead by the end of 1976, just a little over two years from its launch. Production of the QBM version started at the end of 1975. The M42 mount is not that useful as the indexation only works properly with genuine Voigtlander / Rollei lenses so no open aperture metering with third party lenses. The genuine Voigtlander / Rollei M42 lenses are as rare as rocking horse manure. I note you said the meter did not work on your example, this is probably why you did not mention the issue with third party lenses. The QBM lenses are much more common and Tamron and others made QBM lenses also that metered correctly at full aperture. So the BM version is much superior. Your comment about it being super reliable is somewhat funny considering the light meter on your camera does not work. These cameras, VSL1 and VSL2 and their Rollei siblings were very unreliable as was the VSL3E and Rollei SL35E. I know, I have had lots of experience with camera failure with them when they were new. Do not think I have a down on these cameras, I have a Voigtlander VSL3 and two Rollei sL35E's which I love, but I also have a Nikon just in case.

Konica stopped making film before this roll expired. Konica made a range of color negative and a few B&W films, mostly targeted at consumers look for a budget buy. Overall quality was average. One exception was Konica 750 Infrared. This was almost certainly the best infrared B&W ever made. Konica did one production rum of this film each year, making far less than the market sought. So, once a year, a batch would hit the stores, then be gone in several months until the following year. This limited supply compared to demand made it fairly expensive. I still have two 120 rolls in my film freezer, waiting for that special effort.

Hey, just revived one of these that may be damaged was wondering if yours when you move the shutter speed back and forth fast it sounds like a timer that is going off, i tested this with a few of my other older film cameras and did not get this sound and was just wondering if this is something that is normal for this camera.

How's the viewfinder? I have a few old cameras (Zenit TTL, Praktica, Zenit E) and I found it's so hard to see in those dim, dark, vignetted viewfinders if I got the focus right, so basically I'm just guessing pretty much... I am looking for some old SLR camera that has a nice bright sharp viewfinder. Is this one?

I worked all summer when I was in high school to get this camera. In college I was a sports photographer with it. I paired it with an ultrablitz matador with a flash unheard of today I stood behind the goalpost and lit up the trees behind the other goalpost. Incredible combination that I had until my navy commissioning. The F1.4 Rokkur lense was amazing. Price with case and lens and all summer working $376..

No, they are very old cameras now, they were not that great when they were new either. If you want access to the lens system which was ok but generally not as good as say Olympus or Nikon, then I would say go for the VSL3 or Rollei SL35E (almost identical cameras), they are a little younger and far far better cameras. However, I would recommend the Nikon F90X which is a significantly younger camera and far better featured, that is to say fairly modern. It is better made and will cost you a lot less.
