MTD push mower final assembly. She fought me the whole way!!

In this one, let's get the mower put back together with some fresh paint and scavenged parts from the junk pile. Doesn't seem like it wants to go back together cause it fights me every step of the way. Turns out to be a pretty solid old mower.

    I stopped watching at the 10min mark, realized that THIS person doesn't have a clue about ICE. Those nuts he removed hold the carb to the engine, without which he had a MASSIVE air leak between the carb and the engine getting SUPER LEAN mixture! Engine would NEVER START in this condition! Even with the carb PROPERLY attached, the thing NEEDS priming, at least a couple of squeezes of the primer bulb!

    Somebody gave me a 2 yr. old, beautiful condition Toro self propelled mower last year that would not start. You couldn't hardly pull the rope. She had already bought a new $600 Honda and didn't want the old one. When I got to checking it I found that someone had put the bail in the wrong holes which made the cable too long to work. Sold it in the church yard sale for $100. Life is good.

    at what point is it just cheaper to buy a new mower and accept that they only run for a few years.

    • @AverageJoes4u
      @AverageJoes4u 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I see your point bur I've never been a big fan of that mentality. Seems lazy to me. While they are made from junky parts, there's really nothing that could break that can't be replaced or fixed. With the price of new mowers, you can fix the old stuff a bunch of times and still come out cheaper. Just my humble opinion.

    These things are frustrating for sure. I've been working on mine for about 6 days. Lots of things are the same. Mower was running fine and then got sick and then quit all together. Cleaned the carb and adjusted the valves. After re-assembling it would run for a few seconds and then die. Adjusted the valves again, same. Changed the plug, same. Turned out the shear pin came apart and the flywheel was off. Got that fixed. Still the same. Finally ordered a new plastic "disposable" carburetor. It runs now but not the best. I got one more thing to check on the carb and while I'm at it I will look at the brake and see if that might be it. One thing is for sure. I can tear this damn thing apart and put it back together blindfolded now.

    Drug a mower out of a shop outside bay, where it'd been abandoned and sat for 15 years or so. The absolute first thing I did was take off all that brake and remote throttle control crap. Put the kill wire back where the original ones were. Got rid of that stupid long pull rope, that didn't work anyway and put a new shorter one on. Put gas in it, primed it and it started on the third pull. Dont trust any of that "safety" crap.

    Joe, I happen to have a 16 HP Bunton with a 52" deck and a B&S 16 hp Vanguard engine. Long story but got this from commercial mower in around 2003 and had never mowed with it. Lent it to a friend before he bought a JD diesel Tractor with a belly mower. He passed 2 years ago (Marine from La June and it was the big "C" that took him). Anyway, my riding mower broken it's PTO cable, got one from Amazon and within a month it broke the China cast aluminum lever bolt bracket so ordered one from the factory. Talked to my friends widow and collected the Bunton last night. Mowed the back today and it's a beast and I came in sweating and broken down. I'm an old man (74) and this thing for all it can do is still a beast and a chore to operate. But grease fittings everywhere and was not built with planned obsolescence. I plan to have a surrey built to ride on as I have store bought knees. Let me know if you need advice. Mine runs like a top.

    • @AverageJoes4u
      @AverageJoes4u 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate it sir. Actually, not too long after making the videos with it, a subscriber reached out who restores the old Bunton mowers. He sent me some pics of his work and they were quite impressive. I ended up selling it to him for basically what I had in it. I felt like I wasn't going to put the time and money into it mostly because I just didn't need it. It has a lot of potential and I felt like he would get it there so I let it go. They're really cool machines but I have 5 acres and a zero turn just made more sense for me. I even built a sulky for it thinking I would give that a try but it's hard to beat a zero turn.

      It's gotten mixed reviews. Some people say it's a common problem and I should have caught it immediately bur I've had a ton of comments saying it helped them find their problem. I had never seen it so I figured maybe somebody out there could use it.

    I had five mowers in the past two years do that same thing and I removed that whole brake system and just put a toggle switch to shut off the mower.

      I've had several comments saying that same thing. To he honest, it never occurred to me as an option but it makes perfect sense.

    Is this a video about trenching or showing everybody how you can’t weld?

      You're a funny guy. I think I made it clear in the video that a welder I am not. It was a video about a silly idea that nobody should ever try. Having said that, thanks for taking the time to drop some encouraging words for a stranger. Have the day you deserve sir.

    I know you got this one running. I'm not sure you know this, but sometimes a mower won't start simply because of a bad gas cap

      Yessir. I did check that off camera. I've never had it happen to me but I know if it's not venting properly, it can cause issues.
