Christmas in Aledo TX, 2021
มุมมอง 2972 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the interesting things about moving from NJ to TX is the serious jump in "over" Christmas sentiment. People say "Merry Christmas" in stores, not "happy Holidays" and so on. And the decorating is pretty amazing! I got some drone shots, did a fast edit and a retro color grade then dropped on some stock audio. Enjoy :)

    Mdrn Samurai I want to recommend a book for you, Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Lotsa wonderful Stoic/Combat sensibilities. One readership warning...its a non linear tale, I think that's my only complaint. Its about Thermopylae.

    You got it wrong. Armor is about post traumatic stress disorder. Felix in the story survives impossible situations by dissociation and his Engine is simply his survival drive taking over and fighting and killing while his dissociated self observes. John Steakley knew Vietnam Veterans and would talk to them alot. He most likely heard their first hand accounts of how they survived day after day of extreme danger. If you read the book "On Combat" you will hear many stories about how people in life and death situations in combat say that they feel like they are merely watching themself fight and kill - this is the mind separating itself from the horror of the situation to prevent you from shutting down and being killed. Stoicism has nothing to do with this story. People who havent suffered from post traumatic disorder probably just dont understand whats happening with Felix here. To survive the psychological horror, he splits off and lets his "Engine" handle all the stuff. He is so far removed from his own feelings and emotions. This is why there is a part in his book where they build the fort on Banshee and he begins to let his guard down and to feel emotions again - but when the Ants attack he can't summon the Engine again because he has broken down that barrier that separates his thinking/killing/engine self and his true/emotional/feeling self. He is then forced to feel the horror of the situation and it is crippling. This is a normal defense mechanism for people who suffer traumatic incidents and who know they must survive MORE of the same horrible trauma with no end in sight. It requires an extreme level of dissociation. To actually feel the horror each time would destroy your mind and capacity to function and survive. His dissociative abilities were the greatest, of anyone, ever. Thats why the book is called ARMOR - In reference to the psychological armor he has created around himself. The Engine, being that armor. Jack Crow also makes a comment that he believed he was the toughest SOB in the galaxy, but since watching Felix in action surviving these unimaginably horrible situations again and again and again - he says Felix has robbed him of the belief that he was the toughest man. Because Jack Crow and everyone else is suffering such horrible trauma from relieving the events recorded in the suit that they have all now gotten PTSD. This is why Jack Crow often spends nights drinking and then crying his eyes out in the arms of his girlfriend. THE HORROR. It never stops. But they have to see how the story ends for Felix, so they continue going in - this is trauma bonding.

      I have a different understanding than you Mr. Russo. I didn't tie in any PTSD connection whatsoever to the "Engine - Mental Drive" of Felix or that he even had PTSD. I did understand that Felix suffered from loss, namely the loss of his wife and I also understood that Felix didn't want to fight anymore. But those are very normal mental aspects - no one likes to be in mourning and even the seasoned war veteran may get tired of combat but it doesn't mean that he has a dis-order. I also think that PTSD is largely over diagnosed and over sensationalized. Just because one has post stress doesn't mean that one has a mental condition worthy of analysis. Human adversity kicks the a** of the human psyche - simple as that. Now concerning "The Engine" - my take - The Engine was Felix's mind recognizing that aspects of the reptile mind were better suited for self preservation than his own persona, so Felix's mind allowed the Engine to take over. The "Reptile Mind" is only focused on the ID, or animal drive. Sex, Fighting, Playing, Eating, Hunting, Killing etc. Felix ( a science fiction character from another planet) had a direct doorway to the Reptile Mind that he called the Engine. The Engine took over whenever he faced adversity and needed to survive. I also believe that anyone can do this if faced with life threatening stressors and that Mr. Steakley did a very decent job of presenting the Mammal/Reptile Brain hand off. The section where Felix can not "switch on" the Engine indicates that too much sentimentalism during combat is dangerous to the survival of the combat vet. What business does a man have thinking about his wife/kids back home when Haji is trying to kill him? Screw that, get your head straight and - Kill Haji!!! Concerning the character of Jack Crow? Yes he was used to show how formative Felix was, and many people think that Jack Crow was actually a "character stand - in" for the author Mr. Steakley but to say that he also has PTSD really suggests how overly used PTSD is in common language, much like the word "normal", an overly used word watered down of its meaning.

      I can't believe you read my entire comment and didnt realize that Felix had PTSD. You havent had it, yet youre telling me, someone who has, that this is not a case of PTSD. I can read the book and notice "oh this is PTSD right here" many times. I mention some in my comment. I think youre just projecting onto the book your own feelings about what its about. I never said the Author had PTSD. I said he talked to veterans who probably did. So if Felix didnt have PTSD, why would Jack Crow be a total wreck after every session and need to cry his eyes out and drink himself stupid? You think that level of horror and trauma wouldnt cause PTSD? Give me a break man. Everyone has an engine of some sort for survival, but that doesnt mean you won't develop PTSD. The people who seem the toughest and have been through the most are repressing the most horrible shit inside them. This is why when Felix's ability to repress his pain doesnt work, he has an emotional meltdown. Do you think any soldier could experience the 20+ drops Felix had, fight tooth and nail, never knowing if youre going to die or not, WHILE SEVERELY INJURED, and watch everyone dying around you, for YEARS, and not develop PTSD? You would be totally foolish to say they wouldnt. I will let anyone reading these comments decide for themselves because I doubt I am going to change your mind.

      Its not a Disorder to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress, its just stress. You tell yourself you have disorder in your life and you'll never have an orderly life. Dont buy into that psycho babble. Psychiatry is just a 120 year old discipline and it keeps getting revised. Felix BTW was not human he was an alien. You are correct when you say you won't convince me, you are incorrect to suggest my resolve reflects anything other than strength and mental discipline. My Engine has kept me sound...through Iraq to some very public news events. I wish for you Gods Blessings and good health, its clear you are passionate in what you wrote.

    • @robertrusso8299
      @robertrusso8299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sinjyn66 It is a natural response to stress, I just say PTSD because thats the common terms people are used to hearing, but now we're just getting into semantics. Felix had serious mental problems arising from his trauma. He was totally dissociated when he wasnt "the engine" fighting on Banshee. They even analyze his brainwaves in the story and show they are like he has two identities existing at the same time when the Engine takes over.

    • @robertrusso8299
      @robertrusso8299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sinjyn66 Call it whatever you want. PTS or PTSD. I get your point. Its just a normal (but severe reaction) Your Engine or Ego can allow you to push through some insane situations, but turning it off so you can go back to being in a low-stress/happy default mode is the problem for most. If it wasnt a problem then so many veterans wouldnt kill themselves from its effects. Pro-longed repeatedly severe stress/trauma is destructive to your health. Just go tell a veteran who is crippled by PTSD and suicidal "Hey man, its only PTS and not PTSD. Stop using the wrong vocabulary and you will feel better about it". It wouldnt work. You may feel like youre tough because youve been through some stuff in life and never had a mental collapse. Youre only human. You can break like anyone else. Just need to put you through high enough stress levels long enough and you will collapse into a puddle of tears at some point. I have seen many "tough guys" crying their eyes out when they finally broke. Maybe your ego will tell you "wont happen to me, they just werent tough" because your ego is always trying to protect/reassure itself. Real toughness is letting go of that ego and dealing with the repressed pain.

    I chose the SmallRig for my S1 too. One thing to mention is that the SmallRig has an additional mounting screw that bolts the camera's right side steel hand strap eyelet into the frame. This stops the camera from flexing in the cage. So, it uses the normal bottom mount and high side mount points together. Yes, the SmallRig is VERY comfortable and extremely practical with it's side NATO rail too.

    Hey intro music cool! Your section on memories is very interesting. I have done work with memory reshaping, or put another way, how the memories affect a person. Ofcourse there a great deal of research right now with helping sufferers of PTSD. M DMA and Ketamine seem to be proving a high high-ish degree of success along with being talked through things with a professional. My way of describing what happens, especially with a dissociative or VERY good hypnotic state, is that one is able to approach the memory with all its feelings and detach from it. With that detachment, work can begin that ends with a complete acceptance of the memory and associated feelings to a point it is no affects you in ways you dont want it to anymore. There are additional steps for reshaping the memories. GREAT VLOG
