Blencathra and the Haunted Fell
Starting from Mungrisdale the walk takes in the summits of Souther Fell, Blencathra, Bannerdale Crags and Bowscale Fell. On the way there is a chance to visit the lovely Scales Tarn and get a close-up view of Sharp Edge, one of Lakelands hardest climbs.

    Could the tree with orange coloured flowers have been an azalea? I remember azaleas standing at the entrance of the High Close grounds coming up from Red Bank. My parents were the first wardens there from 1953 till February of 1961. A really nice walk you did there. Thanks for taking us along.

      Quite possibly, I'm not well up on flowers, but they were very striking. Interesting story about your parents. Thanks for your comments and taking the time to watch my video, much appreciated.

      @@northernwalks5426 I like to blather :) and I know it helps a channel grow. But it is true. You'd find my father in the YHA history of High Close. Not all informations there are sadly quite correct. Pa was not called The Boy, but simply Boy. But it is true that self cooking after 9 pm was not allowed. He had mounted a sheep scull above the inside door of the self cookers' kitchen with the caption: this happened to someone who cooked after nine! ( something to that meaning anyway). More than 60 years of living in Germany and I'm still homesick. Keep walking! Take care.

      @@medievalladybird394 Thank you again, I loved the story about the sheep scull - what a way to make a point ! Glad you enjoyed the video, for the homesick there are lots of good channels on youtube relating to the Lake District. If I could suggest a couple - Black Crag and Lake District Films are among my personal favourites, lots of videos to check out there. Keep on blathering, it's good for you!

    Hi, enjoyed that local video. A walk I do the other way round, from Great hill to the tower and back. Can I pick you up on your comments about the route being on the pennine way. I don’t think that’s right! Unless there is an alternative Pennines way!😉

We've done the other side of the Newlands Round so everything you did was new to us. We turned left after High Spy and descended via the quarry so never got up to Dale Head. Kevin, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I had a similar walking experience end of October 2020, started at nine, found the beck pretty steep and hard going as you did, the Bad Step impassable, but the views glorious. I kept on up Bowfell but it took forever to get back down - I was walking around up there looking to go down around three pm and by the time I was walking along the valley path it was dark. Took just over nine hours all in, so Bowfell wasn’t that much of an addition in hindsight. Challenging top full of boulders though. I regretted not going down the Band as I found Ore Gap quite challenging too, but maybe there’s just no quick way down! Anyway, thank you, took me straight back to my walk.

      @northernwalks5426 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Thank you for your comment, much appreciated. I am glad you enjoyed the video and your walk - it is a little tough, especially if you include Bowfell as you did, but it is well worth the effort. I did Bowfell a few years ago after visiting Rossett Pike (a very nice little summit) and Angle Tarn. Unfortunately part way up the climb to Bowfell from Angle Tarn the mist came down and I could only see a few yards ahead when on the summit. Hopefully some time this year we will all be able to travel and get out on the fells again. Until then, thanks again and stay safe !
