Great pedal! Great sounds!
I’m currently watching/listening to this as I’m typing this, and very much hoping this will help me get even a basic grasp on setting up my MC6 Pro. One thing I WISH Morningstar had was almost dictionary, of sorts, of all of the terminology used within the editor. I mean, Ideally, a straight up user manual INCLUDING a “dictionary” like that would be so very helpful for someone like me. I’m excited, though, to get into the meat of this video, as, based on the intro, it sounds like you use your MC6 Pro in a similar way that I’d like to….. even using some of the same pedals, like the Microcosm.
Can you demo the new ramper with the random lfo?
todos esto pedales de chase bliss hacen lo mismo! the same glitch shimmer!
Beautiful, 3 knobs. Who knew? This, a decent amp, bit o’verb, and the afternoon is spoken for.
Wow, reminds me of Chase Bliss Mood.
Do you have a preset pack to purchase for the Illumine? Your presets sounds divine!
Fantastic demo, really loved the sound you got in the last couple minutes. Do you think there's any overlap between this and the SS/BS Mini?
You know, the Mini is one of the glaring holes in my pedal experience, so I really can't say, but as far as my understanding for the mini goes, it seems the mini is more fuzz oriented, while even in the harder settings, this still feels quite overdriven. I think if you're looking for crazy, articulate texture this can definitely find some overlap, but I wouldn't be too sure how much!
Somehow I feel like the Zoia could have had a little place in this video. Based on its ability to achieve a lot of these ideas within itself.. and also its ability to morph and send VC/midi to anywhere else. The pedals in this video have given me some new ideas to attempt on my Zoia. Nice one!
It's very funny you say this because I was literally looking at Zoia on my desk last week thinking about how I have a patch saved to modify the pitch of the whammy V. Well I guess it just means we have to do a round 2!
I Just wondering was you running it at 9v or 18v .. Great Demo by the way, I have this Unit and I’m still Learning different ways of using it, 👍🏻🌞
When the pedal is off, do the pedals that are plugged into the loops right in series? Or are they disconnected from the circuit altogether?
Stop expecting pedals to make your shitty modelers sound like a real amp pedals are meant for tube amps
Do you lose any of the standard functionality as there aren’t separate attack and release controls?
Sounds amazing
Yeah, he's really made it sing!! ❤️🫁
Nice pedal and mostly a comprehensive review but it would’ve been helpful to show the maximum Heart and Lungs capabilities in both regular and Compassion modes- you don’t go above about 60% for either.
The knob orientation is different than most pedals on this, I show the max several times on every knob except volume in the sound samples, the indicator placement just points differently than most drives out there
@@signalpath With this orientation, minimum is the pointer at 10 o'clock (as you show at 4:02 and 4:57) and max is 8. At no point do you turn any knob to 8 (or past 5 really) except volume (at 5:35). Correct me if I'm wrong?
Did I catch Mute Math's Spotlight riff in 9:56 ?
Ok no, but maybe yes, because i finished recording this and then did absolutely go play that record lol, but in my defense all imitation was inadvertent 😂
Wuch a great song!! ❤️
What fun!
I am so happy I stumbled across your channel, you have great taste and wonderful eay of exploring a pedal like a musician!
This is almost exactly what I use the EQD Zoar for, keep that gain on the mid range, keep the treble low, get the weight in a good spot, and tastfully dial in the mids ans lows.
Gotta love that Ottawa region rep - ❤ Fairfield Circuitry
first.
Love the texture on this one. That bias toggle makes for a versatile overdrive that can be one of those "secret weapon" sounds. Great demo!
Thank you! Yeah, it's really a fun little trick switch which you can play right on the edge between fuzz and overdrive / distortion. When you flick the bias switch and dial back Heart, you've got a huge variety of tones to play with there. Think John's managed to capture some really beautiful tones and the sounds in between as well.
The first thing for me to realize...that bass sound in the intro song is so good!!!
Lol It does sound great! I want to know if John used this on bass too or not? Because the pedal retains most if not all of the low end, (actually enhances it a lot of the time) it also works beautifully on bass and retains a big roundness and depth whilst giving you some of that upper range dirt and grit you want on bass drive to help cut through.
@@emptyheadeffects I had the same question in mind! I just missed to ask... 😅 Watching the demo I was asking myself how it might sound on bass because it's clearly good for giving the guitar some character!
@@Andreas_tropicalwinter I've not had a chance yet but tomorrow I'm hoping to make a bass demo for precisely this reason! For now, I've definitely put my bass through it on the my own demo on the Empty Head channel. Maybe worth a watch? th-cam.com/video/jan1eLG_om0/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EmptyHeadEffects
@@Andreas_tropicalwinter Just finishing up exporting a quick bass demo, will go live tomorrow morning! I'll send it your way when it's up!
@@emptyheadeffects Thanks, that's gonna be interesting!!!
I'm not a fighter -- I'm a lover! I also have an empty head! Ha-yooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
The only reason I called this The Lover is so that at some point I can make a pedal called The Fighter. Then, once that's out, I make a double pedal whether the two can sit together and battle it out within a singular pedal. Empty Heads are best! x
@@emptyheadeffects Hey... curious... what are your thoughts on those hand wired Ibanez tube screamers that go for $350?
@@matttorrence2900 Booooooo! You said in one word, right?
@@matttorrence2900 Just kidding, to each their own. I am not a purist or a nerd in any sense of the word, so the details of such things don't appeal to me personally - I am interested in a pedal as and when it inspires me to be creative, that it challenges me to behave differently, to play outside my comfort zone and challenges me sonically to use sounds that I might otherwise be uncomfortable or unfamiliar with. But sometimes a tube screamer et. al. is exactly what one needs and to many this is incredibly inspiring, so who am I to say otherwise if it brings creativity and inspiration to others in the pursuit or creative expression?
Beautifully review man as always 🤘❤️
My God, I want that SHSL and Pome combo for soloing/improv. I feel like it adds so much depth to your playing.
feel the same, reminds me of guthrie govan, so dope
Nice video, and cool devices, but 329.00 for the Left Brain Pedalbrain? That's absurd and kinda sad.
The Kilter by Champion Leccy is an awesome pedal!!
this was an informative video and had nice music in him. thank you mr video.
1:00 Dynamic control of effect? overdrive/distortion/fuzz, and envelope filter.
just get a chase bliss lol
Is the Pome an expression pedal that is connected to another device by a single TRS cable? Or does it have a send & return? Can it do fixed rate as well, aside from dynamics of the signal?
Yes, the Pome acts as an expression pedal via TRS, with the ring switch allowing for different configurations depending on how your pedal takes in expression With regards to the send and return question how do you mean? It passes audio whether the pedal is on or off, is that what you're referring to? It doesn't do any form of modulation outside of dynamics, but there's a fair amount you can achieve with that approach alone! Other expression ramper type devices may serve you a bit better if that's what you're looking for
This is pedal p0rn! awesome!
Awesome!, finally a demo of this pedal with MUSICAL examples!, I'm still tempted on buying this as I already have Chase Bliss Mood Mk1 and MK2, Blooper, Habit, Hologram Microcosm and Hexe Revolver IV, lots of overlap but at the same time this could be a good option if I want to have a little of all those pedals in a single unit for a smaller pedalboard
I totally agree, it's not something that I feel like explores much that other pedals haven't but on the same token I feel like it has a very nice curation of different sounds that get you elements of many of the other pedals I enjoy in this genre of effects. Revolver IV and Melusine are high on the list of pedals to try soon. That's an awesome collection!
@@signalpath Thanks, pedals collection is highly addictive 🙂 And yes, try Revolver IV, it also has a super musical approach, I like it a lot
Great video, A pedal worth mentioning that should be on this list is the "TWA Side Step", does what the OBNE Expression Ramper and more as it also has different waveforms for the LFO and expression pedal input to override or combine with the LFO
I've never heard of this one! I'll have to check it out, the stuff I've seen in the past from TWA has all been wild. I love the synth they do
@@signalpath Check it out!, I'm surprised it doesn't have much coverage from other pedal reviewers, it's the best expansion to any pedal IMHO
Check out the TWA Sidestep
What a great video! Utility pedals should get more attention :)
Great demo, dude! Subbed. 😎👍🏼
If you can ever get your hands on the Expression Generator by Cooper FX, I think that's worth high praise as well. I'd also recommend the Pendulum by Mantic, which brings effects loops into this expressive/programmable territory
You know it's funny you say that about the Cooper one, I just passed on a decent price for one and I've kinda regretted it since, I might need to keep an eye out
@@signalpath I didn't really appreciate it until I programmed the sweep to have an organic ramp that starts slow and then speeds up. It really feels like someone turning a knob. Since it can control multiple pedals, I ended up with a pitch/time bend + filter sweep effect by pairing it with a Tensor and Ottobit Jr. Hope you're able to get your hands on one! Utility pedals are such underrated gems
Love this. Need more utility type pedal rundowns. Thank you
✨💖🧠💖✨
Your solo lines are really interesting and musical. Lots of liquid, dynamic, and creative choices. The stuff around 12 minutes and for a few minutes has an unusual gating of the high end that reminds me of the roll off dial on the Shallow Water. The sound is underwater, trying to surface and then bursts above the waves periodically. These are the kinds of things that are getting my attention more lately in the pedal world. Tones that break up a little unpredictably, sputter crudely, but in elegant musical attire😂 Off to beat up my tele, droning out some weird pads into my lo-fi loop junky, and then firing crazy time based stuff to hear the rockets explode. That Chase Bliss exploration is bonkers beautiful and then (me back looking at the video), WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ZVEX LOOP JUNKY WITH THOSE CRAZY PERFECT GRAPHICS??? I didn't realize the most gorgeous version of my favourite pedal of all time was going to crash the party! Hey, this is beautiful stuff you are up to here; up my street musically...but please, tell me about that ZVEX. That should be the official graphic for such a tremendously creative, often misunderstood pedal masterpiece. Very inspirational work...we are in a new Golden Age of creative guitar FX, absolutely. Nice to hear artists making music worthy of the moment.
Thanks for the kind words my friend! The limited edition Lofi Junky is part of a collaboration between my friend Andrew (@ambientendeavors on YT/IG) who runs a pedal shop called Little Box Effects. So far there's been 2 releases with the artist ALXNDR for the lofi junky and the 59 sound. I don't think there are any plans to reissue the lofi release, but you should probably follow along with his social media if you want to stay in the loop on things that might be or might not be coming in the near future....
I'm sensing a potential Mk.Gee type usage moment here...but this sounds great. Not the harshness of the mildly faddish thing previously mentioned. I'm actually thinking Trey Gunn's, The Joy of Molybdenum...
Eurorack has the right idea with flexibility , modulation, and expression. Pittsburg had a pedal eurorack case that was sadly ahead of it’s time. More modular pedals please. More cv control!
I agree, but I wish that the interfacing was as simple and malleable as eurorack, it would be fun to have easier access and more variability to where and how we apply it I’m holding out for more face place CV ins for pedals
Many effects can be modulated with CV using a “floating ring” cable. I agree though, it’s great to see more CV control specified on effects! (Also, check out the Left Brain CV!)
This music-while-the person-explains scenario is becoming epidemic; why don't the dumb-asses understand that it's never going to do less than distract the listener................work it out!
Being an amputee they could’ve picked a better name
After looking into this, I do believe you’re right. I had not realized it was an existing term, thanks for your note and I apologize for my inadvertent insensitivity regarding the topic, cheers - John
@@signalpath no worries we live in a world of insensitivity I am a musician and play in two bands, I try not to let things get to me, but we all have our moments ✌️
Definitely has that Chase Bliss layout (sans dipswitchies) and vibe
Hell yes. I love this! How much will they be?
I believe 299 USD!
@@signalpath Not bad... You think it's worth it if I already have a MOODmkii?
It's like they have stolen everything good about the mood and the microcosm and put it in a simpler version pedal! But also missing some important features.
I think when you're targeting simplicity you're always going to have to make those kinds of calls to pare down whats offered, but I'm curious what the important features you would have added were!
I love pedals, and what a great tool this is, but this would be another one of the pedals that probably wouldn’t leave my home studio. I have a lot of pedals and guitars like that. They are expensive and hard to replace. I would never gig them.
I know exactly what you mean. Great for inspiration and home contemplation, but maybe not for the live expression
