Hey guys and welcome to the channel. I decided to start a how-to channel of sorts on youtube with my friends sharing knowledge and helping others because I don't have anyone else to share it with anymore. You see, my daughter Haley passed away about 6 months ago. She was my shop shadow, always absorbing knowledge and doing projects with me as we both would cut up doing funny characters and just having a good time. One of the hardest things has been working alone and not being able to share things with her. I thought maybe if I started to share some of my projects with you guys it would possibly inspire others and help them to take on these tasks. In some way it still feels like she is with me in the studio and helping you guys! If you want to drop a buck to help with production patreon.com/freedonkeyrides and we are building a merch store soon! Keep on wrenching guys! Oh yeah, and girls too!
Honda Pioneer 500 Custom Dump BED Build
Just a few things I want to let you guys know about this build from a few of the first questions I was asked.
I want to go over weights with you because this was always a big deal for me. When doing fabrication you have so many things to consider and a big one for me was that I need it durable and sturdy but I dont want to add a ton of weight.
Before we just start to compare weights though there are some important points I want you to consider. First this bed sits 4 inches above the frame so when you are carrying a load its only 4 inches above the frame while the factory rack rides on top of the fenders sits at about 9 inches above the frame. We have brought where the load rides down considerably.
The complete bed with the POR15 and Raptor liner is 62 lbs. The tailgate, strong enough for a demolition derby, is 32 lbs. If we can claim there is another 10 lbs in the couple of brackets we put on the frame that puts us at 104lbs
The factory rack and fenders weighs in at only 36lb but if you were to put the little basic moose utility box on top of the factory rack which most do thats another 60 lbs! Not only is that now a total of 96 lbs, your 60 lb box is riding 9 inches above the frame and Then when you add a few hundred lbs of a load all of it is riding up high there and not down low.
We cant forget these P5s are only 50 inches wide so we want to keep that load as low as possible!
I hope you all enjoyed the video and I do want to send out a special thanks to Monster Graphics out of Pensacola Fl. This is not a paid promotion, in fact I usually pay him a bit more than he asks for because the Owner ERIC really goes above and beyond!

No special equipment needed, and no specialized tools are required! We’ll go step by step to give y...
Mounting or re mounting a tire with a tube that has no air in it is the most common mistake that causes tube piinch. This is terrible advice. The tube should have just enough air put in it to hold shape. This prevents the tube from getting caught under a tire iron or from getting caught between the tire and rim bead.
@@kevinnielsen1356 Hey Kevin and thanks for the comment. As I do appreciate the different perspective I think your opinion of “terrible advice” is just plain incorrect. My evidence that it’s incorrect you may ask? I was taught this way 20 years ago by a retired professional racer at the time and have replaced hundreds of tires without ever pinching a hole in the tube. For you to insist a method that has a 100% success rate by myself being “terrible advice” is just.. terrible. 👍
@Freedonkeyrides Maybe 100% success for you. My own personal anecdotal evidence is from 5 decades of bicycles and motorcycles always changing my own tires, I gave up on relying solely on talcum powder on a completely deflated tube about 48 years ago after learning to put air in the tube. Think about it. How would a tube get folded, or by pinched the tire iron, or pinched between the rim and bead when it has the shape pumped into it. It will naturally resist those pinch points. Also, what is the drawback? The pressure is to low to interfere with tire mounting. I apologize for the word terrible. Not the best advice is more appropriate. I also apologize for bruising your ego.
@@kevinnielsen1356 I’ll start with saying that there is no need to defend your way of changing a tire. I never said anything negative about your advise and I apologize if somehow it came off as I was. I have had zero issues over a 20 year span of doing tires the way I illustrated in this video so I have never tried your way and therefor have no evidence of it working or not. Whats that skin a cat saying? You said it’s been 48 years of changing tires for ya? Congrats and that’s not a joke! Not many of us riders get to ride long enough to say we have been wrenching for 48 years them! Pretty cool. Now you ask my opinion of drawbacks when doing it your way. First, when installing the tire, as you are trying to get the last bit of bead over the rim and it’s getting really tough to slide in a tool, a first time changer could easily press too hard on the tool resulting in the tool sliding too far in and making contact with an aired up tube. If the tube is flat and your tool slides too far into the tire you have very little risk of the tool hitting/hurting the tube. Secondly, as you are getting the top bead onto the rim, the bead area approximately 180 degrees from where you are prying the bead over the rim, must be pressed toward the center spoke area of the rim. When you press that opposing side down getting the bead to the center of the rim you would be displacing the air from that portion of the tube making the pressure of air in the other side, the danger side where your spoons are sliding in, higher! Now the tube is even more likely to be hurt when trying to install a tool to get the bead over the rim as there is more pressure in the dangerous area than when you started. Again, just because I don’t do it your way doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Many ways to skin that smoke wagon. LOL Lastly the ego comment. I wont respond to it because I don’t want it to shadow the genuine discourse shared. 👍👍 🏍️
@Freedonkeyrides I t isn't my method, it's a method I learned riding enduro from seasonrd riders. Have you tried it?
nice content,My lever if i pull it goes only 1/2in and i have to put 3 or 4 fingers to make the bike completely stop. at 9:02 the brake lever is soft just like a clutch lever. Any advice to fix my problem, thanks
Incredible.!
Where did you get the side pioneer panels and the tailgate
The tailgate I built and the panels themselves are old Big Red bedsides. I had custom decals made for them but other than that it’s how they come.
I went for a ride on snow and it bent, so try to fix it but it snapped, now I’m here. Soo…never ride on snow lmao
Hey if no one got hurt and it’s a good story, it’s a good day! Lol be safe!
Would have preferred some "how to" dialog instead of Hill Billy Rap.
Hey thanks for the comment. It’s really a lot of work to do a good video on “how to” and I just did not have the time to do all the editing for this one. I thought this would give others some helpful ideas on building one for themselves though. Shoot, even just taking pictures and documenting all the steps and things before then putting this video together took quite a bit of time. In case you did not know, this is a free video. I don’t make a single penny from any of this. I’m just trying to do my part in sharing the little I know. 👍
I have had my 2018 since 2019. Its a yard mule. When we go to Arizona in the winter, it is our transportation. I have run 40 with a good tail wind. On the street it goes to the limiter all the time. On trail, I drive like a grandad. On the homestead, I cant believe I haven't pooed something the way I abuse it pulling loads. This was an awesome video series. In the end, I would never do to that much work for 10 mph. But I'm glad you guys did.
Old vids, but have you, or do you know of anyone that has "fixed" the auto downshift on the 500? Many of us want to get rid of the auto shift on manual mode, and make it truly manual shift.
Yea, I’m sorry I have not put up anything in a bit. I was having a great time doing powersport videos but they take so much time to edit and put together! Life gets so hectic finding free time for FDR is hard. I’m trying to set up a goal to get back into the makeshift studio. When I get comments from folks it reminds me that I’m actually helping someone so I really do appreciate the comment! I have heard a bit about the downshift thing but I have not really looked into it. I’m sorry I don’t have a good answer for ya. Hope you have a great Holiday Season. 👍
Nice video 😊
Thanks man! Sorry for the slow reply but I appreciate the comment. I’ve been trying to get back into the makeshift studio to put sone videos together but they take so much time. When folks comment it reminds me that they are actually helping someone and it gives me motivation to try and get back at it! Have a great Holiday Season!
@@Freedonkeyrides thx you to
Wow is absolutely amazing so professional looks from the dealer. Are you selling those for the Honda Pioneer 500’s?
Thanks! I don’t sell them I just thought I’d made a short vid to give sone ideas to those thinking about building one and show that you can build a great piece without having $10000 of metal working equipment. 👍 Thanks for the compliment!
@@Freedonkeyrides is amazing what you do. You would make a bank selling this for the honda pioneer 500’s owners and for 4 wheelers. Absolutely amazing
Enjoying the crf250f build. The more the better. I’ve had mine for a year.
Thanks buddy. I’ve been so busy I have not even messed with Honda. I hope you’re enjoying your bike!
Definitely a lot nicer than what Honda offers! The weight would be the only thing concerning as the tail is only rated for 450 lbs.
You know at this point I really think Honda does that for legal reasons and so they can also sell their "Bigger and Better" models. Just to let folks know about the weights though the factory rack and fenders is about 37 lbs. This bed completed was 62lbs and the gate (I far overbuilt) was 31lbs so there is about 50-60lbs more weight in this setup over the rack but that rack rides way up high on top of the fenders so anything you load up is UP there. The bed mounts much closer to the frame so your load has been lowered. In addition most people put a heavy steel basket on top of that factory rack. Thats not only getting you closer to this weight but also its a steel basket riding way up high. The only thing I can find wrong with the mod is how much time I spent doing it! LOL Thanks for the comment, it really was a good one!
I have a question, does both side of the rear rim have a spacer/bushing
Nice job
Thanks! It was a fun project.
I am so very impressed, just what I needed, something more to make me feel inferior! I love my new 520, and am really quite well adjusted. Seriously, great job man!
Ha! Thanks a bunch for the comment Roger! I’m quite sure if you are a person who takes the time to compliment others you are definitely not an inferior person! I had a good time with this bed build and a great time doing the speed gear set. These pioneers are neat little machines that’s for sure!
Love the vid really help full!!!!
Thanks! It’s good to know folks enjoyed it. 👍
That is awesome! Definitely would be interested in seeing a video on how you did it!
Thanks! I have been so busy with other things that I have not been able to do much with the channel. I am hoping to get the time to do a break down one day of a step by step of this build but until then I hope you enjoy the content and I appreciate you reaching out! A simple “that is awesome” helps me convince myself to get back to putting time into making videos! 👍👍
I definitely second this how to would be great
Nice. I was gonna build one today for ours but after seeing this I’m gonna pause and see about doing something similar. Where are the bed sides from?
They are from a Honda Big Red 700. You can get a used set on eBay and not break the bank! They are very durable and lightweight.
Bro! That is an amazing job!!!
Thanks buddy I appreciate it. Building the bed was a fun project and its really a useful little side by side now.
Thanks for posting this! Very helpful. Keep ‘em coming. Just placed an order for a set of for my wr250r. I expect they’ll be a huge improvement from the stock trail wings.
Thanks for the comment and I am glad you enjoyed the video! The WR is a great dual sport and these tires really will rip on that bike!
Glad you guys made the videos. Im curious as to what you get for a top speed wide open throttle?
Top Speed was at 48mph. Our stock GPS top speed was 37-38mph. I’m really glad you enjoyed the videos! We have a lot more good stuff in the works just trying to get it finished up. I tried to set up some simple tests to give everyone a better idea of how it pulls through the gears more and has incredibly better cruise speed without really sacrificing much if anything.
Thank man i think im hoing to attempt this mod. The gearing on these is waaayy to low and im always hitting limiter on open roads while everyone else pulls and leaves me in the dust 😞
Just finished this mod today and boy am I impressed everything worked out perfectly managed to touch 80klm on gps on my 27’s no more limiter for anyone with a pioneer this is a must do. Honda should of done this from factory. Only think that was confusing was programming the speedo chip 👌👌👌
@@blainesloan6200 I am so glad to hear that the videos helped you with this modification. I thought to myself if just one person really enjoyed the videos and it helped them with this modification it would be worth making them! Yea the speedo module is a love/hate kinda thing. I love how simple and small the thing is but I hate programing it with one button! I tried to explain it as best as possible in the 4th video. I made a short video on a bed build you should check out in your spare time you may get a kick out of it!
incredible series! as a new p500 owner this is very helpful. thanks for the attention to detail. hopefully the pioneer 500 vids are still going to come! definitely plan to do this once out of warranty lol
The gear ratios feel so much better afterwards. The few things Honda could've should've would've done better!
We wanna see you full send it now.
heck yeah!
This looks like a lot of work. I have a friend I'm pretty sure knows how to do this. Maybe we can make a deal...
There is no doubt, as with most any modification that gives results, some work involved. If you get to hang out with a friend while doing it though, it’s not so bad. 👍
Anyone that came to your house back in the day knows about pops & his whitey tighties. No telling how many times he answered the door bell in his undies.
😂 pops like I dont know who you calling chubby
Another great video!
Thanks Buddy. There is a really fun test video at the end of the “tire install” video showing how the MT21 Pirelli holds the ground. I know I could have gotten more views to make that video separate, but I felt like it was the dessert after installing the tires so I left it as one. 👍 Hope you continue to enjoy!
🏆🏆🏆👍🇺🇲🙏. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for the comment and I am glad you enjoyed it!
Love the addition of Santa Clause. He’s a natural!
He will never believe that I did not tell you this before your comment. I did a bit with him while he was in the shop where I said, “ before anyone leaves a mean comment about the new guy, you might wanna take a closer look… (then I was going to put a sketch of Santa on the screen while pops was making one of his typical faces) then I said “striking resemblance, just sayin… 🤷🏻♂️” lol but it just did not work out how I planned when I got to editing so it was scrapped. Lol.
I love how detailed the video is and the different camera angles to show how it’s done. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! Its a good time making them but also a bit of work so it’s always great to hear someone enjoyed it!
And what is your opinion the MT21? Thank you
You know, I feel like all over the Internet there are people giving opinions on things that they have no real basis to be able to give opinions on. If I had never had a cheeseburger before, I’d tell you a Mc D burger Is the best ever! This is part of why I did not want to give an opinion in the video but if asked I’ll give ya my initial 2 cents. The tread does feel hard, like it’s going to have a decent street lifespan for a fairly aggressive tire so take that into consideration. Long street miles I don’t have yet so I can’t give you much there but the little I’ve tried to lean on them (on the street) they feel great! Relatively great, don’t expect a Dunlop 17in race slick coming into a corner but they gave me a somewhat similar street confidence level of a Bridgestone Trail Wing 301 and a 301 is definitely a lesser tire off road in my opinion. I lowered the pressure down another couple PSI on these Ps and they really seemed to grip pretty well and that’s what I was trying to show on the video. The simple crash was 100% my fault. It goes from a loose soil to a hardpack and I tried to get the back tire to bite when I should have hit that corner flat track style! Very happy with the tires. If there were one thing I could change it would be the pricetag but come on we all wish things were cheaper or we had more money right! LOL. The bikes suspension on the other hand (if you’re trying to push it really hard) leaves much to be desired but again everything is relative! Im VERY impressed with the bike for the money Honda is asking for it! We will for sure have suspension mods on this build though. I see the bike in your profile. I just put a set of Roval wheels on my hard tail and have not turned them into a taco yet so pretty impressed. Yes I ride a hard tail go ahead pick on me, I’m used to it. 😆 (I live on the gulf coast no real MTB terrain like out west) Anyway, thanks for the comment. I do hope you enjoy the video. 👍👍

@@Freedonkeyrides thank you for your feedback. I have a Mitas E09 on the front and i feel the profile is too round and feel that it wants to run away from me on the dirt corners. Have you tried the Mitas? Do you believe a more square profile will be better on dirt cornering? Thanks!
@@koalaboyTT It really depends a lot on the bike and the type of dirt you are riding on. Normally a smaller, softer block will get better traction in a soft dirt but on the street you will regret it. Every tire is going to be better at some things and worse at others so you have to find that one that works for you AND the bike you have. I have not ridden on the E09 but I have seen them in person and they look decent. Have you tried lowering the pressure some when you ride off road?
@@Freedonkeyrides yes, went down to 1bar. The tyre itself is quite hard, not very flexible. I am portuguese and did cross the country OffRoad on my dr650 with those tyres and the only complaint was that. The ground was mostly hardpack, sometimes with some loose over hardpack.
Awesome video , thank you keep making them
Thanks buddy! We are working on a bunch of stuff right now just trying to get it edited and uploaded. 👍
Cora would like to know when you plan to explain what you did to the jet ski 🤔 Great video Travis! We can't wait to see what's next. 👏
Thanks! Now, to my princess of speed Cora, if I could ask you to take on thing from that video it’s to never stop learning and you never know who you may learn something from! I only know who Nabbit is because I listened carefully when you explained to me how he can run right by the enemies without being hurt! Thanks for that fun lesson! Oh and BTW there will be watercraft ( Jet ski ) videos for sure! Maybe one day we could do a video together teaching other kids about simple tools? 🤔 Haha!
This was a good refresher about changing a tire. I gave up screw drivers for tire levers long ago. No indication that this was your first video. Also, good job utilizing whatever technology is available that goes into making a video.
Hey, I really appreciate that! Not only do we have more coming for this bike build but we are editing a pretty cool side by side modification video and I really think it’s going to be an interesting video if you’re into mechanical things!
Dude! Love this one, I’m really excited for more!!
You should have went with the training wheels bro
Man you know how much more (****) Matt is going to give me now that even someone posted that I needed them!🤦♂️ HAHA! No joke though, I have made it to the age of saying, “I remember when I could keep this up all day…” It was too hot for this old fat guy! Getting old sucks but I guess it beats the alternative.
