Nice tip!
"When something is working flawlessly, do not touch it!" The engineers of Fluval are actually paid for this shitty idea? After decades in this hobby I can say that the only thing that AC needs to be perfect is the motor running inside the tank as it is in Marineland's new line and Tidals.
Why does the motor need to be inside the tank? Thanks for watching!
@@skepticalaquatics I would restart after a power outage and would work more efficiently eliminating the known risk with some aquí clears not starting after an outage.
It's not a myth that Aquaclear filters can lose their prime from a power outage--at least not the old style, anyway. My (older) Aquaclear 50 has a 50/50 chance of restarting on its own after a power outage. Since I run two filters though, it's not a major concern. If the 50 doesn't come back online, the cheap Marineland 30 always will.
Restarting and losing prime are not the same thing, as shown in the video. If it loses prime there’s an issue with water level in the tank. If it has prime but won’t restart either the pump motor is bad or there is a blockage with the impeller. Not much room for any other reasons for things. Thanks for watching!
@@skepticalaquatics It's not water level and it's not blockage. They just don't restart sometimes.

Good information!
Thanks !
Can you add more eggs in a couple of days, or do you start the whole process over again?
Have to rinse and repeat. After a few days it starts to stink and you’ll know it’s time to reset!
I just picked up one of these, hoped to slowly outfit all of my nano tanks with the ac 50s, 6 in total but was dissapointed to see that a new version was in store. I purchased one after having 3 of the old ones. I liked the old ones. After a week of the new version in another tank it's doing the same job. Yes I've noticed the differences but don't think it huts the experience. If you don't like the added tabs you can cut them off. One thing I don't like is that it's overall a little flimsyier, it doesn't seem like it'll break but if you compare the injection molded plastic parts it's obvious they found some corners they can cut. It's the same price though so I'm still buying!
Thanks for sharing that experience !
What's your average room temp?
75
Is that for fresh water tanks
Could be used in whatever
@skepticalaquatics thanks
The original version is way better ☝️
Nice !
I think I saw Pet Supplies Plus selling then outdated version 🤔 I believe the current new version works with the skimmer ☝️
Yep
Oh god… You’re suppose let it have waterfall flow for surface agitation to give oxygen to your fish. Overtime you will get an oil sludge surface. That’s where the skimmer comes in handy ☝️
There is also a sponge filter in the tank, thanks for watching :)
Cheers from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I am a subscriber to yours. Fantastic, concise review! I am very pleased with my new Aquaclear 20. On top of everything else you said it also looks sleeker and more modern than earlier model.
Nice
where to buy?
Petco/Petsmart
Looks great! Wish they had addressed the design of the leveler. Poor design on the original and mine always pops out. Tried everything to keep it in and eventually just removed it and use a door stop or wedged piece of wood to keep it level.
I have not had any issues with it. It fits snug. I think its better to pull it completely out then turn it to adjust it before reinserting it. If you force it to rotate while its sitting in its hole I think it wears the plastic down. Thanks for watching !
@@skepticalaquatics this most certainly could have been my issue. Thanks for the tip
I have my first beta fish in a 5 gal bowl with no filter and i wanted to know if i can just add a couple of the biomax tablets to the tank???
5 gal is a very large bowl, I would suspect that if you can keep from cleaning the bottom and the back half of the bowl glass, it will be enough surface area to keep it cycled without the addition of bio media. But bio media could help, yes. A light layer of gravel would also work but if you already have the bio max media on hand go for it. You can vac out the mulm that will collect in and around it but never clean it just let it be dirty and you’ll be fine. Another option would be some moss. Moss will also trap some mulm and house a ton of bacteria and no special lighting is needed it can grow from ambient light in the room. Thanks for watching!
@@skepticalaquatics thanks so much!!! Will def try it!
The Red Root Floaters killing it. And I dig the OG box filter!
Thanks yes I have found the best luck with them directly under high spectrum light. Even slightly shaded they don’t do as well. I think that’s why most people don’t have the best luck with red root floaters!
@@skepticalaquatics Facts!
Hey man, enjoy the videos. Love the long form and in-depth explanations. Super happy to see the Michaels fish room shout-out. Love his no-nonsense approach. A cheap yet attractive option for the background is just frosted window film. I noticed there was no heater - what temp do you keep the room at to keep him happy?
Hello thanks for the kind words. 76-78 in the house. And yeah no nonsense is a great way to describe Michael’s fish room lol!
i have the new ac110. i keep my water level halfway up the black trim piece on top of the tank to hide the water line. maybe 1/2" above the bottom of it. the filter waterfall lip is about 1" under the water level when you do this. this is how i always do it. this gives you a little wiggle room to evaporation. after a week when i do a water change the water line may be closer to the bottom of the black trim piece and the filter lip is still 1/2" below the water level at that point. this way the water line is never visible and the filter is always in the water not doing the waterfall sound and will start back up very easy if the power should go out. it makes a nice current across the top of the water too. i have noticed a lot of people keep their water level too low. the black rim on top of a tank is there to hide the water line as well as add support to the glass of course. i know some tanks are just glass on top with no rim so you will always have a waterline showing on those.
Seems like you figured it out. Yeah I don’t see how people can stand the waterfall sound when the water level is low it drives me nuts!
i don't really see a point to having a skimmer in an aquarium. maybe i'm missing something but any slight film goes away after a while on it's own. i guess the waterfall part pushes it into the water and it gets sucked into the filter?
I think the idea is that the film is made up of excess waste and proteins, so its trapping it within the filter instead of mixing it back into the water column it’s removing it from the tank. I have a few no filter setups and I’ve never had a problem with surface film causing issues with oxygen levels in the water, maybe due to all my tanks having plants. But I did notice when using a hang on back with the water level touching the outflow of the filter I did accumulate surface film in that tank.
@@skepticalaquatics i got my ac110 output about 1/2"-1" below the water line and i never have any film on the surface. i don't have any plants either cuz my fish eat them all up lol.
@@BackyardAquatics-o2m I run mine with filter floss going from the outflow to the surface of the water. It silences the filter and reduces the current below and I typically run mine about 1-1.5” below the outflow. When done that way there is a lot of surface film due to nothing breaking the surface tension. But I don’t think many people do it like me lol. I’ve never cared enough to try to use a surface skimmer but if I come across one I’m gonna grab it just to use for the channels sake in case people want to see how it works. At least that’s the excuse I tell myself when I buy fish stuff lol
@@skepticalaquatics yeah would be cool to see it in action for sure
I've used one on my planted 14 gallon. It's made a huge difference with small pieces of plants and nasty, oily junk. When I don't use it, I can tell a difference.

Not sure if you see that spot of ick on the right pectoral fin. I have had success treating with ick x and high temperatures.
Thanks for watching so closely. No ich thankfully. He is doing great so far!
Great video, Fluval seems to have nailed this update. Thank you for taking the time to show how to keep these filters running after a power outage. Another benefit to smaller, more frequent water changes, filter is less likely to lose prime there too.
Thanks. I think you are correct!
yeah on the water changes just pour water into the back of the filter again before you start it up to prime it again.
I’ve seen salt water fish at Petco so there not the most expensive
At this location on this day, it was the most expensive fish in the store. Most of the stores in this area have removed the saltwater section unfortunately. Thanks for watching!

Can you tell me if the AQUACLEAR 70 will fit over the rim of a standard 75 GAL TANK ?
“The maximum aquarium rim size for AC20, AC30, AC50 and AC70 filters is 0.9″ / 2.4 cm. In the case of the AC110, it is 1.4″ / 3.6 cm.”
It won't. I bought a 70 for my 75 and doesn't fit. Fits perfectly for a 55 tank though.
@@skepticalaquatics The NEW VERSION of the AQUACLEAR 70 FITS, is that what your claiming ?
@@AQUARIUMFREAK123no it does not. Found this on the aquaclear website “The maximum aquarium rim size for AC20, AC30, AC50 and AC70 filters is 0.9″ / 2.4 cm. In the case of the AC110, it is 1.4″ / 3.6 cm.”

I don't think so! A Galaxy Koi Placat. I think it is the Alien. Prices I've seen it would be!
The most expensive betta on the petco menu is a dumbo ear I cant remember the details but it was in the $30 range. But at that store on that day, the mighty galaxy koi plakat was the top dog. Thanks for watching!
Awe, I just love seeing this lil fishie's journey! Like a story.
Thanks will be updating soon!
Isn't this actually a female due to its small fins I thought males always have fanned out fins
The plakat betta fish were once bred to fight for sport, so they do not have the curtain-like, billowy finnage that bettas are known for. Instead, they possess much shorter fins and tail that allow them to zoom through the water. Thanks for watching!
Just received mine from Amazon. Will follow your method, with the only change to it being mixing salt and soda in water bottle before pouring it into hatchery and putting plant grow light over top hole. I noticed that you have to turn the top lid to the CLOSED position for it to work effectively. If you don't, a small hole is left and light will come through it. Hole will be in 1st outer chamber. It'll draw some baby brine to it away from the top hole in inner chamber, were they should be collecting. Thus allowing the baby brine and their shells to mix.
Correct about the hole. The lid does not technically need to be in the closed position. There is a notch in the body of the hatchery just above the marking for the open position. Meaning that the notch ni the lid and body will only line up in the open position. Any other alignment is technically closed. The only reason I think you would need to use the open position is to dump the contents into the sink but it is much easier and faster to just remove the lid and just dump it. You dont need to add a light directly above the hatchery, the ambient light from the room is enough to draw all of the brine to the center in my experience, but it wont hurt anything to do it that way. The light may get in the way of you seeing your hatch, as well as youll need to move it each time you harvest some of the shrimp. Thanks for watching!
I bought a galaxy koi female and I love her. So friendly. Now I have to look at old pictures to see if she has changed. She is in a four betta sorority in my 29-gallon planted aquarium. I get compliments on how pretty she is. Also on how my sorority sisters' fins are perfect. Last night I was cleaning on my tank and she nibbled on my hair and scared me. I pulled my arm out so fast she hit the floor. We were both shocked. Luckily, she was fine.😊
Awesome!
I feel you! The first time one of the bettas in my sorority tank nibbled on the air bubbles on my arm, I jumped, thankfully only jumped and just sighed. Bettas can spicy lmao
this betta has a red colored label on the cup which is falls on the standard group of bettas for petco and petsmart. You should be looking for the 'purple' tags for their most expensive ones red = standard bettas purple = exotic betta types

Nice content no need for clickbait fail notations in the description
It’s referencing the fact they did not move the pump filter to inside the tank on the intake tube, and the addition of the tabs on the media basket being the main complaints about the new filter. Thanks for watching !
Bro if you have money buy a canister and snip these things They are just bad overall it doesn’t matter the size of the tank if it’s above 50l time for a cannister even at smaller tanks
Thanks for the tip!
I disagree. I have run both. The problem with a canister the seals can go bad and leak. If I run an over the back filter I will over size it. I run both a canister and over the back on my forty-gallon breeder tank. On my ten over the back. On my twenty-nine my fluval 207 is dying and I will be going with two hang Ons.
I have a 305 I’ve been running since 2013 and only had to replace the rubber ring once. They still sell the rebuild kits for whatever part you need for cheap.
Nothing against HOB but with a canister I can stuff it with whatever media I want and more of it than a HOB
I love how simple the tank is My very first betta i was clueless..we didn't have the internet like we do now..i did everything wrong... 1 gallon tank No heat No filter Or any kind of water movement... i hate things in there that could of cut him..and the worst was his cheap flake food... This poor fish jumped out 2 times The first time somehow he was electrocuted..not much but enough to to stun him...the send time he was almost cat food... This betta lived for 5 years... I now of course know how to care for them properly and the lobgest betta ive had has only live 3 1/2 years... I told my husband that our first betta should of died..i never checked his waterand i literally would scrub his tank and everything in it once a week..so there was never any healthy bacteria but he still lived 5 years...makes ya think if i would of done everything right i wonder how long he would of lived for...
Thanks ! Yes fishkeeping is a journey!
