Chinese Shiitake Logs... Are you eating untested Shiitakes from China sold as 'Locally Grown'?
มุมมอง 75ปีที่แล้ว
It is a more common practice than you'd think for US companies to import inoculated Shiitake logs from China, that colonize on the boat, are fruited in a US farm, and are allowed to legally claim they are Locally Grown. This deceitful practice should stop and the Mushroom Farmers need to be honest about what they are selling. Know your Farmer and Support those with transparency. have a great day

Do you autoclave after this?
@@TechBroMushrooms yes, 15 psi for at least 1.5 hrs.
@@FungusFingers ok great I’m following this to the T. So far seems no contam and good hydration %. Thanks
What size bags are you using for this demo? Looks way bigger than the 3Ts that I'm used to. Thanks for the knowledge drop!
@lost_in_wanderlust i use Unicirn bags, standard size 14a degradable. Probably just the perspective that makes them look big.
If i use unpelltized soy hull do i need to lower the water content? cause they say that unpelltized soyhull tend to have more water content. Its been a month and all of my bags of grey/pink oyster stop growing :(
@gabrielnovelo6865 I don't lower the water, but you can adjust if you have soy with more moisture. You could test your soy by heating some on low heat in the oven, or dehydrator until you are sure it's completely dry and compare the weight of your sample before and after drying. Should give you an idea of your water included.
The goal is 2 parts dry by weight to 3 parts water by weight. Or another way to put it is approximately 60% total hydration.
Curious why you don't impulse seal before pasterizing? Is it better to do it after?
@cinderblue3251 this is sterilization, pasteurization is a different lower temperature process for substrate. You can not pasteurize grain Spawn, it must be sterilized at a minimum of 215 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 15 minutes in the center of the bag. This usually means a pressure canner/cooker at 15 psi for at least 1.5 hr. At these temps the water in the bag expands and would blow open a sealed bag. Therefore the bags are folded but left unsealed to allow for expansion and contraction. Great question, thank you
@@FungusFingers Thank you, great explanation! What specific species have you tested this mix on? Does it work for all medicinal mushrooms or even those that are magical?
@cinderblue3251 grain Spawn is a necessary intermediate step for all mushrooms. Most grains will work for most cutivatable species, gourmet, medicinal and Sacred.
Love the setup 😍 good use of space and organized
Great tip. Would be interesting to do an agar experiment with various mediums. I have heard some will add erythrirol and that will speed up colonization. I can link the paper for anyone interested
@cinderblue3251 sounds interesting, however most dishes only take 2 weeks to colonize or less, and speeding things up rarely is necessary.
Just blew my mind about training the mycelium on the food supply and then making copies of that trained mycelium!!
Amazing info and very interesting. Impressive camera work too. Love the info on reishi and appreciate you sharing. Just found you. Please keep up the great work
Beautiful
Hi what size bag is that? Ive got 3T bags so I guess double up your recipe and still cook for 2 hours after venting? Thanks great video!
@soulsmile4799 3T is a type of filter, doesn't describe the size of bag, just the size of micron opening in the filter. These are the standard size unicorn bags. They hold up to 6 pounds of hydrated grains but I suggest no more than 3 lbs
@soulsmile4799 I would follow this recipe exactly until you can do it with zero contamination, then possibly double batch if you need, however the larger the batch the higher your internal temperatures get and the higher the chance of contamination. You are better off with 2 bags at 3lbs than 1 at 6 lbs.
Those "soybean hulls" come from soybean pod (now dry husk) where the soybeans grow in or are they outer skin of soybean "fruit"?
They're the outer skin. I actually asked this question to my local grain seller today and he kindly explained.
hi zack, i would like to personally speak with you....please get ahold of me.
aloha zach reading about your arizona mushee project would be nice to trade check out
Nice tutorial. I have 1.5lbs grain bags. What’s the ratio of red milo sorghum to water? It seems like it’s close to 50/50?
The ratio for these small grains are 2 parts grain to 1 part water. So if you are looking for 1.5lbs finished bag weight you would use 1lb of grain and a 0.5lb of water to achieve a 50% hydration. Hope that makes sense, happy growing!
@@FungusFingers Yes it does! Thank you. Your video is the only good one I’ve found using these. I usually use whole oats in the states but I moved to another country and red sorghum is in abundance here and the cheapest grain. $15 for about 80lbs.
Everybody tries to make this complicated. I'm guilty of it. It feels like I'm controlling more variables when in reality I'm just creating them. This is great. Actually going to try it tonight. (Along side my anal retentive science lab bullshit of course hahahaha.) Thanks brother!
3 bags of this method and 3 bags of a boil no soak method going into the PC in 30 mins. No millet here, just pure milo.
How did it work out?
Yup I also was doing it much more complicated, see the 45min video on how to do corn Spawn. Happy growing!
Upvote doesnt work on my end.
Weird? Well here's an upvote for you
Been using fast fruiting mix, probably getting robbed. Need to see if I can source these in my area and try it for myself.
Highly recommend this mix, everything I've tried loves it, except Shiitakes.
Yes, shiitakes don't like soy hulls. They prefer wheat bran, which can be sourced from feed stores as worm food, rather than purchasing more expensively in the grocery aisles. @@FungusFingers
@copperdomebodhi5606 Agreed!
hi there, just wondering if you sell mushrooms as a business and if so how much or is it just to eat ? Thnks
omg awesome footage
Thanks!
Is there a single guitar strum in the beginning of this video?
Probably, as my music cut out as I started video, I've already been pinged for copyright so I didn't add music

Can you let me know where or what state your located at? You seem to have at least two different names for your company or possibly one name for your company and another for your channel. Thanks for the great videos and info. 😎
Yes my channel: 'Desert Water Mushroom Rock' is a catch all for the things I'm up to. I'm in Arizona. I'm the owner/ operator of Sky Island Mushrooms. I'm also a water harvesting and permaculture design consultant working under the name : Desert Management Technologies (DMT LLC) I'm also a contract Geologist. I will make a video that explains all the stuff I'm trying to do. Thanks for the question, I realize it's a bit confusing.
KEEP MAKING THESE VIDEOS
Thank you!
GOOD TO KNOW THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW
Looking to switch to master mix and bags I've always grown on cedar chips in buckets. So my question is once the block sets do you just add spawn on top and seal up and go from there ? Thanks in advance
After hydrating the wood and soy hulls, the blocks need to be sterized (15 psi for 1.5 hrs) and then allowed to cool slowly (24-48 hrs) and then innoculated with spawn.
Stay netted bro!
Thanks for sharing! Wondering how much spawn you typically use for a 5lb bag?
I use about 1/4 of a pound of spawn for Oysters and Lions Mane, and about 1/8 of a pound for Shiitakes and Reishi
The more spawn you use, the faster your block should colonize. My quart jars hold approx. 3/4-lb of spawn. Once colonized, I add two (2) of these jars of spawn to a 10-lb block. So, to answer your question, for rather quick colonization, I'd suggest adding approximately 3/4-lb of spawn to a 5-lb block. More or less spawn will get the job done; just keep in mind: more spawn = faster colonization. Less spawn = slower colonization. And remember, have fun! Put on some rock music and roll with it! 🙂
@copperdomebodhi5606 some species do not like too much nutrients (grain Spawn) and yields will suffer. Oysters don't seem to care but Shiitakes and some medicinal species like Reishi do for sure.
I love your content, I would love to see more!
Thank you! Absolutely working on more videos.
do u soak overnight
As shown with hot water, no. If I were to use cold water, then yes.
good deal thanks
