In this DIY we tackle 3 items, 2 of which are good to do at 60,000 miles: Change Spark Plugs, clean Throttle Body, change PCV, and while we are at it swap out the Battery for a stouter battery going from a group 25 that max out at 625 Cold Cranking Amps to a group 34 with 800 Cold Cranking Amps. Demo is on a 5th generation Subaru Outback 2017.

Testing Cheap Fix for Subaru Oil Filter Drain Back
มุมมอง 1392 หลายเดือนก่อน
After reading the post on "BOB Is the Oil Guy", I decided to give it a try on my 2017 Subaru Outback with 59K miles. It makes a clattering sound on start up for 5 or so seconds after sitting for a few hours. This was a quick way to test it at a low cost. Information for the idea came from this post Post Sep 24, 2022 by BBDartCA: bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/subaru-drainback-fix-cheap-easy....

Toyota and Lexus 3.3 Liter V6 Spark Plugs Change at 204,000 Miles
We had issues with Michelin tires on one of our cars. Very very soft sidewalls that could puncture easily. After going through about 6 tires, we were recommended Nokian by the service advisor. I’m glad we did. Two years, maybe 1/3 or less worn after 12,000 miles, zero pressure loss or punctures, and BETTER than snow tires we’ve had during the winter. I’m sold on Nokian.
thank you for the help.
I just finished doing this for my daughter’s 2018 Subaru Outback with 86K. Quick notes: drained cold at 60F; got out ~4qts Added ~ 3qts+ using braided plastic hose 3/8” ID 5/8” OD and funnel under hood Added remaining 1Qt at 99F-115F. Engine took 1 hr to reach mid way dash temp gauge ~ 115F on thermal gun. Entire job took me about 2 hours from set up to button up car for test drive. FWIW Subaru CVT -II was green and $108 for 6 QTs at dealer. Old fluid was dark green/lite brown.
🎉
2024 Austin Tx Called a plumbing company to see if they could stop my leaky shower head. Came over and quoted me $450+ to replace the valve cartridge. Went to Lowe’s bought the piece and installed it myself. Cost $60 and 45 min. In case someone was wondering if it’s worth it to try yourself. Thank you for the video!!
Thank you for sharing 😊
incandescent is definitely brighter. because the housing is designed for that type of bulb.
Wow, I thought they were about the same.
If this had been an English job they’d make the engineer Sir Baron Lord Bridgewater with a thousand pounds a year .Who ere you are a second time to you I,ll tip my hat and wish by God I had the brains to rebuild a carb like that . Well done and thanks .
Would have been good to warn about the first spring that one encounters …..first timers often come a cropper when this rolls away . Good teacher but great ? Nice vid though .
My throttle is wide open when i checked today .. its a Outback diesel 2015 any idea?
Sorry, I don't know much about the diesel version. Most diesel engines don't have a throttle. The only reason you may have a throttle may be due to exhaust gas recirculation and the need to control mixing.
@@justbehandy yeah But it would be closed if the engine is turned off ?
@simonbengtsson9361 sorry I don't know how Subaru has the diesel version setup. We don't have those in the United States.
Nice and clear demo. Thanks
Thank you!
Yes, I did. It didn’t work. Thank you!
Sorry to hear that, Blessings
Thank you but my light won’t go out.
Did you hold down the filter button for ~30 seconds?
Please try holding the filter button for 30+ seconds.
Great video! Only question I have is what diameter is the clear tubing used to fill. Thanks!
Let me check, but I thought I mentioned it in the video.
I just checked and you are correct I didn't include the diameter of the hose, just the length. I will check tonight and let you know, but your funnel may be different, so please check what you are using.
GREAT instruction thank you for doing this.
Hope that you find the links in the description helpful as well. Blessings
What's would the cost be for all of that work ?
All depends on if you go to a dealer that charges ~$120/hr+ or independent shop ~$100/hr, and if you want to use a quick struts like I did or rebuild the struts. So a lot of factors go into it, and parts and labor can range from ~$1.5k to $2.5k+ with an alignment.
thank u man, I checked all except the fuse (that it should be first haha)
Hope that is all it is. Good Luck 🤞
Phenomenal Video - Thank you for all the detail you put into it. I will be doing mine this week.
Thank you for the feedback, please let me know how it goes. I hope the items in the description are also helpful. Enjoy!
I need to change the front and back differentials show me how ? Where you buy the funnel for fill up the front For 2019 Crosstrek Thanks
Please look at the description below the videos I made for the front and rear differential. Each video has the tools, gaskets and fluids needed. th-cam.com/video/6IOEIj0g73I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ydvJdywmtn3b20Kv and th-cam.com/video/-W0Qp5q56-s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=70G5RbHiqh4wUk1h. Hope that helps
I use Purolator in everything. No offense but that Subaru filter looks like a piece of junk. Hardly any casings etc. I’d use that Purolator!
Is this the same sequence for the legacy as well?
Thank you for the video. I wish it was outside in daylight.
What is that spray you used to clean the reservoir body and lid.
Brake parts cleaner, should be a link in the description.
Thanks your video. Good job. I learned from you.❤❤😂
1907??? That's an old trailer 😂
Just getting into the tent camper thing, thought this 2008 Rockwood Premier model 1907 would be a good start for the family.
you dont have to put silicone sealant around the edges and under the flapper?
The seals provided do a good job of sealing. Never had an issue. If you do get a small leak, just give the screws in the area of the leak a little turn, around an 1/8 of a turn.
@@justbehandy okay happy it works for you :). i have liner and metal and that's how they do my type 30' x 15' oval
Super helpful, guess I need to get a few more tools. I’m only at 31k on my 2024 so doing the diff and CVT fluids. Your videos are great. Waiting on the funnel for the fluid thanks again.
Thanks for the information, you did a great video, I have 50K on my Subaru Crosstrek and I am going to change mine out.
Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback. Truly appreciate it. Please check out my other video on how to change the fluid. th-cam.com/video/CrObvBedRv8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CQeMxHPIfAWlrT7j
How much fluid did you take out vs how much did you put back in? is the question I ask.
Took out 4.5 quarts and it took ~ 5 quarts to fill, but I did lose ~ 2 to 3 ounces of fluid during the process for cleaning the tube and letting the excess drip out. Hope that helps.
Where did you get your vacuum pump
Please see the description below. Should be listed.
The attention to detail in this video is incredible. Thank you for taking the time to explain this procedure. At my job I am tasked with writing work instructions so I really appreciate it when I see such detail. Thanks again.
Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. Blessings!
You don't have to relearn the transmission like the DSG of volkswagen?
That is correct, no relearn needed.
This long time engineer loves this video. Your explanation of why the car needs to be running to keep the valve body full is especially valuable. It is important to understand the logic behind a task versus doing it blindly. Last, your dedication to avoid contamination should be noted. CVTs are packed with many parts in a close system and any foreign bodies are a direct hazard.
Thank you for the feedback and your time.
th-cam.com/video/XWMRVTlTfTY/w-d-xo.html this is the link to the CVT fluid analysis. Enjoy!
How about the 2019 subaru crosstrek
Should be a similar process. Crosstrek is smaller, so access may be a little bit more restricted.
My 2018 has the drain and fill on the side of the pumpkin. It’s a 3.6 touring. 🤷♂️ same process. Just saying it could also have them in the side.
Thank you for helping others that have the 6-cyl.
BWARE TS508WF Autel has removed the ability to manually enter ID number on MX sensors
Should be able to clone any sensor with the TS508 on to the MX sensor. You can even program a new MX sensor for a specific vehicle that is supported
Hey man, I just wanted to know, if I rotate my tires, do I need to reprogram the new TPMS sensor locations? Or does the outback learn the new positions of the TPMS sensors after a while of driving? I have a 2018 3.6r
If you don't have a panel showing tire pressure of each individual tires, you don't need to do a relearn for tire rotation, only time would be new sensors.
What’s the hammering effect?
It's when the Valve is not mixed the hot and cold together properly due to internal valves. Causes a sound like something in hammering your pipes.
great video I wish I saw your video before i installed mine. - When inserting the new one, I pushed it in using the tip causing the internal to be pushed in. Would this cause any defect to the device or can I simply push it back out?
Should be ok as long as you got everything back in and no leaks. Enjoy
@@justbehandy thanks for the reply. no leaks but the water doesnt come out as it did before it that makes any sense.
Did you install an original equipment value? If so, then it should flow the same rate unless you had more rust come loose and reduce flow. In that case, I would take the valve back out and see if there is more rust. Hope that helps.
@@justbehandy thanks for the reply. yes, i installed the oem valve
Hope it works better and no rust blockage after trying it again.
I’m struggling with that 14mm bolt, how do I fit a wrench there when the power steering line is somewhat blocking it
Is this at the rear of the intake? I used a box end wrench.
@@justbehandy yes, I tried a flexible ratcheting one. It won’t fully go in, something s blocking it. Would a stubby be better?
@bhadz100 wow, try going at it from the passenger side bring the wrench in horizontal, not from the top, that may work, otherwise as you suggested maybe a socket on a small wrachet
Maybe you could show us where the fill plug is again? I think you skipped that part...
It's the 8 mm hex at the 2:40 Mark in the video. Should be next to the axle boot.
Thank you, just did mine by using your video!
Awesome! What brand CVT fluid did you end up using?
@@justbehandy subaru brand off of Amazon. Was afraid to use anything else but the green stuff. Lol
Cool easily has another 200,000 miles on it, buddy up the street has one with 350000 miles
Did you need to perform any system resets? I heard rumors about it being a requirement. I'm a bit timid when it comes to CVTs, but your video is straightforward and to the point.
I didn't need to do anything system relearn wise. Just change the fluid and that was it. Hope that helps.
Best video ive seen on this procedure!
It is important to put padding on the windshield before removing the blade. If the blade snaps onto the windshield, it could cost $1000 to replace the windshield and realign the camera.
I have never had that happen to me before, but you bring up a good point. You never know when and if this could happen. Thank you for sharing.
What ever happened with this. Did you make a containment box?
I will have to post the update. Thank you for the reminder
Great video. This is very helpful when i need to replace my Subaru(s) spark plugs. Thank you for sharing. How has the car been performing with the upgraded NGKs?
Thank you. The car's performance is the same with upgraded plugs, Hope the last 100k miles.
one of the most thorough demonstrations of this procedure
Thank you for the feedback 😄
Man that replacement axle looks about like a 1980's India manufactured piece, splines are horrific!
Yes, I returned the Carquest part and got another brand. Please see the description below for what I ended up with.
