DEAFERENT
มุมมอง 118K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Darksparkle Films is proud to present their first short film for the deaf community directed by Emily Grigor! The title Deaferent is a play on words Deaf and Different. Deaferent is about a deaf guy who always feel like he is different and looking for someone to connect with, someone who is deaf. He finds this connection with a deaf girl or is she? Let's find out!
Are any of the people in this video actually deaf? Their signing is so slow and sloppy…And the interpreter was also a bad signer…and inappropriate/unethical…not his job to correct the teacher…
Beautiful...I'm crying.
Kids got rizz
If I'm deaf I can listen to music deaferently
IT WAS A VERY COOL SCENE SHOWIN SIGN LANO U AGE COULD IT BE BIT SLOWER IF ANY BODY ELSE COULD LEARN THIS SIGN LANGUAGE FROM THESE VIDEOS IT WOULD BE WOW!
I cried! Such a good movie! Thanks. I felt each person.
🦠🦠🩺
I PREFER BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE
Beautiful wow
You both crack me up 😂
This is awesome though I love it. Great job!!
The unqualified interpreter annoys me. Common in the profession interpreters taking work they aren’t ready for.
Ya, I think you forgot your ABC's there for a second lol In her defense, I think she was only stuck on T because she was laughing too hard lol Edit: I don't know enough ASL let alone my alphabet in BSL but I knew enough to thoroughly enjoy the video XD
First I'd like to say that this short film was down right awesome sauce <3! Secondly, absolutely nothing about my rant below is meant to be aimed at Emily or any of the cast of the video. I've read the comments and a lot of people are saying the interpreter portrayed in the video was unprofessional, he was a bad interpreter, etc. I'm a hearing person and I respectfully disagree. Let's address one of the primary things that people seem to be missing here; he's a teacher, his job is to teach his students, that means all of them. Not most, not the ones that are convenient for him, and I certainly don't think he was right to disregard his one deaf student because he had "a lot" to cover in the class. A language barrier is NOT a valid excuse to exclude one or more of your students from your lessons. Schools all over America make great strides in placing students in ESL classes where applicable, so why aren't the deaf/HoH given the same opportunities ? We've gone through a lot of effort to accommodate the visually impaired/blind with textured sidewalk tiles, sounds at crosswalks, etc. We have lowered the seat height of our toilets for those in wheelchairs, we've made at least one bathroom stall much wider to accommodate wheelchair accessibility, we put in ramps instead of stairs in at least one of our entrances to public buildings, there are even laws that are strictly enforced to ensure these accessibility criteria are met and hefty fines/penalties for not implementing them. To think society has instilled in people that sacrifices must be made on the deaf community's part and even have them believe it's reasonable to compromise on their civil rights in order for them to get at least some of the things the rest of hearing world and people with other disabilities gets is NOT right, it's WRONG and if I'm being frank here, it's sickening ! Getting back on track...the deaf student has the right to have an interpreter there, the student has the right to get an education, hell kids not only have the right to an education, it's required of them. That interpreter had every right to be angry; he was trying to do his job and that teacher did not make things any easier and certainly made no effort to be accommodating. I don't care if you've got a lot to cover in your class, there is such a thing as print outs you know. The teacher getting in the way or even preventing the translator from doing his/her job, I see it as violating that student's right to an education; and violating the rights of a minor no less >.> How's that for food for thought ? :P
This comment is from a year ago I know... but I have to set things straight ( I am a real-life Educational Interpreter) the Interpreter that was portrayed in this movie was most defiantly acting in an unprofessional manner... For one I would not have to ask the teacher to slow down ( it's the approach of how you deliver the message as an Interpreter). Secondly, the Interpreter should speak to the teacher after class. Never interrupt the teacher in the middle of class. Next, speak to the teacher after class and discuss ways to help accommodate the Deaf student. You may as an Interpreter also encourage the Deaf student to approach the teacher with the Interpreter to speak of an approach that is more accommodating for a Deaf student.
Deaf have hard life. Communicating is hurting for deaf. Hearing dont understand deaf is. Deaf need you to learn ASL that way deaf and hearing don't seperated. They should stay together at elementary hearing and deaf can grow up both able to communicate with hand signs for future. I wish education system need change for stop barrier communication not seperated.
Would’ve been better if they had native signers, but great video!
Nevermind, they’re native 🤦🏼♀️
1:20 skyrim npc dialogue 3 6:05 it went from nightmare to white picket fence in 20s flat xD
Um, it doesn't look, from their signing ability, that some of the actors are Deaf? Why are you hiring hearing actors to play Deaf people?
The only Deaf characters are James and the younger James (brother). Those actors are Deaf in real life. The rest of characters are hearing.
4:53 top 10 anime betrayals.
❤❤
She was mean not good to do she trick Deaf man - my sister Deaf so i do not think she was right all she should have done was introduced her self and be friends

I'm just learning to sign...found this video & it brought tears to my eye. Beuatuful little story. Wish me luck...starting one on one lessons next week. I'm excited😝
Good luck! I'm sure you will do great! Glad you enjoyed watching the film <3
Deaferent HAA hahahaha! that killed me for some reason.
Am sorry deaf have to put up with shoddy interpreters. The interpreter was not professional, out of role, arguing with the lecturer during class. If interpret for a lecture needs to be able to keep up, is dressed not appropriate ( should have a shirt to contrast with skin color for him a dark colored shirt ).
You should go watch my video on being hearing impaired
Wonderful
Thank goodness, I went to Deaf School of Mainstream!
That was an awful interpreter. What he did in the beginning was unprofessional and would not be tolerated in actuality. As an interpreter you are allowed to ask the instructor to repeat something or speak slower if at all possible but the way he got involved was extremely inappropriate.
Adrian you'r right it was unprofessional! I still have my hearing but half of my family is deaf. i learned sign language when i was 7 years old. That interpreter should learn some social skills!
Honestly, sometimes my Interpter has to interfere because professors don’t know what it’s like to have a Deaf student in class so they keep talking like a car without breaks.
Speaking for hearing people, that professor needed it. It may be unprofessional towards the interpreter but as a hearing person I would have took away his job. He was ignorant. Teachers in college should be taught about how to help with deaf people. Just because he can hear doesn't mean he had to be ugly and disrespectful
The interpreter was unqualified for the assignment. The instructor wasn’t speaking too fast. But even if he missed some info and needed to ask him to repeat it, he should have handled it differently and not been confrontational. That was very unprofessional, and you can see how embarrassed the student felt because of it. (Speaking as an interpreter.) It‘s a scene in a film that’s telling a story, but in real life that wouldn’t be appropriate at all. Unfortunately, though, some interpreters may behave that way. :(
Way to go Tyler and Emily!! 👍🏼😁
Im not deaf but i feel So much love por deaf people, i want to learn sign language
If you'd really like to learn ASL, I can help you up with that, first learn the alphabet, and little simple phrases (You can find that anywhere on yt). Then u can follow lessons 😊 Im watching: Bill, asl. Best to start with 01, He's a proffesional teacher.
Same!!!
luz crucen Why Deaf Can't be spoken just like us Speaking Normally?
Yeah i was met some people have deaf.
I don't lied .. myself will visiting date Milo ventimiglia smile .
My relationship date mix Milo ventimiglia face ??
Yes .. my deaf meeting at Milo ventimiglia hearing good action fun ?? My story time 3 ?
I am half deaf It takes me longer to process words in my brain. When someone tells me something and there is background noise going on.I would like to learn how to read lips.
I liked the film but there was bits missing like Deaf culture, Deaf values and behaviors. I think James jumped ahead but wouldn't the fact they didn't share Deaf experiences... therefore she didn't lie.... i would rather it been more about his difficult time having access within school and public places vs Deaf community.
Deafness & profound hearing impairment can be a lonely thing to have . It leads to isolation which can lead to deep thinking . So as to try & make any communication count & not be wasted. I feel you have achieved this by your short film . So I believe there is some sort of weird balance made . I enjoyed the film , thank you .
@Lisa Godin ,Thank you for your reply . You do show great understanding with what`s going on around you . Yes it is a visual world , I try to get people to speak to my eyes, many still don`t, even audiologists as they type at their computer still speaking . However I asked for a printout of my own audiogram. Using this & watching some of Dr Ted Venema talks on youtube I gained a far greater understanding of how hearing & speech works . Like you I`ve had my share of problems with hearing aids , I do believe they can be improved with technology & patience. If you like you can reply by email . tmz5272@gmail.com. All the best Lisa
I am deaf. I have been deaf since the age 5 and am now 67. there are things I noticed and want to bring up. Emily was wearing earphones pretending to be hearing listening to a radio in the beginning. This bring up a broad spectrum of the diversity of deafness from those who want to blend in the hearing community to those who isolate themselves from the hearing community (example in your video of the 2 male students criticizing and putting down Emily's hearing aids). Emily just had a ear operation and tried out her aids. Depending on the quality of her aid and fit to her particular deafness (range of hearing sounds high pitch medium and low pitch often vary) It is very understandable that she gets headaches from hearing undesireable unfiltered noise constantly pounding on her eardrums. And needed to remove it during those times. Aids are best when listening to music (not too loud though) like Emily's dad's piano playing. Some aids can be programed to tune out noise. Just like hearing people program themselves to not listen or tune out nagging, background noises, and focus on one sound. Example cat running when he hears the noise of a can opener thinking he is going to be fed, no matter how noisy it is....
Nice introduction to deaf culture. the female protagonist would be classified as a soda(when her brother who is deaf becomes an adult-Sibling Of Deaf Adult) The first interpreter portrayed was not a good one (a good interpreter can abbreviate the teachers oral talking, and is never involved like that one telling the teacher to slow down, It is the deaf students responsibility to speak up. Just pointing out some reactions I have with your nice, well done video.
Some deaf people experience bad interpreters like him which is unfortunate. You are right about how good interpreters should be. Unfortunately some of deaf people don't always have a good interpreter. At least we can report if that happens. That's why we kept the bad interpreter in the film to show that even we struggle due to bad interpreters
@@darksparklefilms8956 Your reasoning makes perfect sense.
And then it turns out to be a beats commercial “Listen to the vibrations of music now!”

She should not of built up his hopes then deceived him . Very heartless and cruel .
Some deaf women are hot as u like .
