"Speaking Up: The Power of Assertiveness 💬✨ Hi everyone, Dr. Abby here! I recently came across a quote that really resonates with my message on assertiveness: 'Toxic culture thrives in silence.' It made me think deeply about how silence often seems easier, but it can allow toxic behaviors to persist unchecked. Imagine a scenario: at dinner, a friend embarrasses Jill by commenting loudly about h...

The first step before you show your value is to know your value. It's about understanding what makes you exceptional and unique. Often, self-consciousness becomes a barrier. I see it in my work helping people find jobs. Many doubt themselves, citing lack of experience or appearance concerns. My son and his wife are American. He has German blood and his wife has Filipino blood. They are Christian in their mid 30's and probably won't have kids. So if they have no kids to look after them shouldn't her Mom and Dad, both Filipino, tell them to take of themselves and don't worry about utang na loob? My thoughts are if they want to financially help them out that's what Christians do but if his wife is saying they have to pay because of her "culture" and her parents are Americans, I think her parents are in the wrong because it's taking away from the kids financial future.

      Hi Doc Ohm, One of the greatest discoveries in this "Speak Up Anak" process is that we must identify what we want to do (or don't want to do) and communicate it to others respectfully. There are two things to consider with your question. The first one is that your daughter-in-law must decide what she wants to do, and if she wants to give to her parents, she should. If she does not want to (or can't), she should say talk to her parents, in a firm yet respectful way. The second consideration is that your son and his wife must make the decisions for themselves. They will make choices and learn from their experiences. Thank you for your comment.

      @@dr.abbyhamilton8579thank you for your response. Unfortunately his wife is a sweetheart and could never stand up to her parents especially her Dad. They were HS sweethearts and my son had to endure a lot of cultural racism being the "White boy" and not the preferred Filipino early on in their relationship. Her Mom and Dad regularly spoke Tagalong around them. I told my son they are American and if they speak Tagalong they are talking smack about you. My son loves her and pushed through that and married her. They don't do that now, they respect him now he tells me. I am wondering now if it's because they are giving them a nice utang na loob check each month?🤔. Personally I want to go to her parents house and explain to them let the kids go so they can, at 35, buy a home and build a life together instead of funding your retirement. My fiancee told me stay out of it and I will. I have not said anything and won't to my son. I would totally understand if my son went to the Philippines to get his wife. Her parents live in a $3 million dollar CA home on a golf course and they're American. Why are they asking for money from the kids? I am honestly just trying to make it make sense.

    Thanks for opening up on the most relatable topic ever-although I'm Indian but I can closely relate to whatever you just said cuz India is one of those most colonized country ever and I kind of despise the people in the bottom tribes of the caste system and I spoke the Aryan's languages in their pure accent. Alot of people who speak in poor English grammar are ignorant of this; but being pegged to a certain identity into a rigid mould to inflict changes in the behaviour is certainly wrong way... Plus I'm not a big fan of project India (the system, the people, the way are the way they are)

    What if you have utang na loob then you paid for it through love,gratitude, assist etc. Does it mean your utang na loob been paid?

    • @dr.abbyhamilton8579
      @dr.abbyhamilton8579 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my experience and knowledge, I would say that there is a certain point where you feel like the debt is paid and maybe even overpaid, which puts the other person in debt to you. From a general perspective, it really depends on the person because even if you feel like the debt has been paid, the other person might feel like you still owe them more. The most important thing to do with utang na loob is not to keep track of who owes who, but instead, build a healthy relationship where you can be helpful and supportive of each other and communicate openly with each other. This prevents misunderstanding and builds stronger relationships.

    Hi Dr. Abby, I’m new comer in Canada. Flying from Vietnam and Japan where taught me “don’t fight”, “do not say what you think”, “ boss is always right and you are wrong”. It is killing my soul when I live in new culture and also new family (in-law) where people has strong voice even I know they said things conflict with what they said. I didn’t answer but my brain came up with a lot of answer. I started to find out what is wrong with me and I found out Assertiveness. Thanks for your sharing!

It has helped so many to come out of this closed feeling. Continue to use your voice because the ideas you have are part of the value you bring to the world: your intelligence, your heart, and your caring. Assert yourself in a firm, noble, and respectful way. You can do this! Watch my videos at speakupanak.com to hear how to push through the cultural barriers.

    The judgement that we are doing in our life is based on where we came from. There are wrong in other place in w/c seems like correct to my place where I came from. And absolutely I agree that there are wrong in my place and may be correct to the other palace. My question is 'who is right and who is wrong?' Walang Utang Na loob for me is a very broad topic to discuss with. For me I would like to put these phrase as it depends or case to case basis. Lets put these phrase specifically to a parents and their children. Yes I agree that the parents has a big responsibility to their children. But what about those parents who are irresponsible what will happen to their children? My question is, are we not going to look back from where we came from? I think I got a very simple logic "YOU WILL NOT BE A GOOD DRIVER IF YOU WILL JUST FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION AHEAD OF YOU AND NOT LOOKING BACK AT YOUR REAR VIEW MIRROR."

    Salamat po for this video and sharing this with the TH-cam community. I’ve felt very disconnected from Filipino culture as of late and growing up. My Tatay and Nanay grew more distant growing up and fights escalated. My Nanay comes from the Visayas from Billirian Islands, I noticed in her that she’s dropped a lot of Filipino traditions and a refusal to teach me. My Tatay who’s white and from America would make fun of Filipino traditions a lot and I felt a lot of shame and pressure to assimilate into American culture purely. It broke my heart, I feel a lot of sadness. It means the world that I can watch your videos and learn from you. Thank you.
