Hi Soapsters,
Ben here and i love making soap. Cold process Handmade Artisan Soaps. I use soap as a medium for art - and this channel is there for anyone that wants to learn the basics of soap making - from swirls to sculpted layers.
But i'll also show you how i push the boundaries with soap and hopefully create designs you've never seen before.
And as the name suggests this is a queer space. There is no judgement, there is no hate and there are no assumptions. the one rule is "be kind". My pronouns are he/him or they/them if you prefer

Good to know, thank you! ❤
Thank you for the beautiful, detailed, enlightening video, straight forward and soothing <3
The skin benefits are looking pretty nice. I was curious myself and found your experiment. Even if a good blue isn't had, at least there's the benefits. Thank you for this!
Hey, this is a lot of good information. I really dislike having the music in between you talking. It’s very annoying. Please don’t do this in future videos. Thank you.
I think this is the recipe that I've been 'looking for'! How long do you leave the soap to cure for before it can be used?
@@shirleyedwards1490 because it’s a hot process recipe the finished soap is essentially usable out of the pot but I always cure for about 4 weeks as I think this helps with the final lather and longevity of the product
@@QueerBullSoap Thanks so much for your quick response. I can't wait to try this recipe
Soapers with real information dont stand much of a chance against the "know-it-alls" in this arena. keep up your good work..quiet aciever, can only try, cant do more than that...😊 cut and paste soap making, not a lot of credibility..wash and repeat until it becomes reality...
Oh my, absolutely gorgeous colors! Love it. Bet it smells amazing. Well done! Hugz, Tree

Thank you for sharing this, very helpful information for our collective learning. Really appreciate seeing this. What UK fragrance was it? And also a question for you: Would it help if the batch is stick blended through emulsification to light trace, and then the fragrance added right at the end, and only hand stirred in. Mixed in evenly but for say no more than 20 seconds. Then poured into the mould? I wonder…. 🤷🏾♀️
❤
Thanks a ton.. Well explained..I had this cutter from last 3 years but didn't know how to use it.. No instructions came with it.. Now I will be able to use it Can't thank you enough.. God bless you 🙏
Oh no! Awful! I do wish UK fragrance suppliers would give us more info about how they behave.
The trouble they have is soap recipes vary so wildly that they may test it in their recipe and have mild to no acceleration and yet another person may have moderate to heavy acceleration. I usually test an oil in a small batch first regardless of what kill info a supplier may have on my recipe. Perhaps you should offer fragrance suppliers my services to test oils and give soaping notes?
Man I have learned so much since I found your channel. Thank you. And I too am a fan of Lisa from I Dream in Soap.
Thank you so much. I just try to give unbiased information and hopefully inspire others al a little. Lisa is wonderful over at “I dream in soap”
Thank you so much. That really helps.
My thing is less that the glass is or isn’t prone to failure, and more the consequences if it does fail.
I will always maintain you need to do what works for you and, what makes you feel safest when soaping. I’d never say you had to use one thing versus another. I’d also not outrightly shame someone for their choice - but offer suitable alternatives and suggestions I have tested and tried myself - or an honest opinion on things I haven’t tried (and then test them out so I can be sure for myself if my opinion on that idea was correct or not)
In the recipe... all the oils are marked in percentages but clay n charcoal in grams... Its difficult to guess . Some light over it would be really great.
5g is equivalent to a teaspoon and 15g equivalent to a tablespoon. The thing with clay and charcoal - they are very easy to add or subtract from a recipe (just be aware clay can accelerate trace) So you can add a teaspoon of each and see how that feels or add a tablespoon of each and adjust as necessary
The 1:1 Coconut bar is an ideal Laundry soap. Either for handwashing items or shedding into your homemade laundry soap mix. // Olive Oil soaps, I’ve always understood, require 12 months cure time 9-12. And as a result they are more expensive, and the slime factor diminishes 😊. // Rapeseed’s other name is Canola Oil. It’s a man made ‘creation, and statistics prove it to be Very deleterious to health. An interesting exercise Bravo 👏
I’m not sure how you normally accept questions for your videos. I hope this is OK…. I wanted to ask if when preforming a zap test does soda ash have a taste that might be confused the taste of a lye heavy soap?
Not at all. Zap test is a sensation not a taste. Although i would always suggest you get some ph test strips and ensure you’re is between 8-9 as this is a more accurate indication if your soap is lye heavy.
@@QueerBullSoap thank you! Thankfully I have never been zapped…but soda ash does taste yucky lol
Doesn’t all soap taste yucky?
I like this color combo, but who is Larry (21:30)? I like your ink, too. It's weird to watch a soap-making video and think, "I just like this dude," but this is TH-cam, so the personalities are as important as the content. Thanks for both educating us and entertaining us.
Larry as in happy as Larry is just a very British turn of phrase.
@@QueerBullSoap TY. I've learned something new. I'll have to use that and see how my American friends respond. :)
Interesting technique. Thanks I will give this a try. Yours really do look like fire!
Beautiful soaps❣️
I have found an alternative to citric in sodium gluconate which does not consume lye. I am really keen for you to try that and get your thoughts. I love your videos. There’s no bumf!
That’s a great shape for a salt bar.
The purple portion of the soap ended up being such a lovely rich color! and the discoloration on the other portion was such a surprisingly bright yellow color- super interesting.
Do you ever use specialty salt? Like pink Himalayan salt, black or red Hawaiian salt, etc. Not just from an interesting visual perspective, but I was wondering if different kinds of salts (with different mineral contents) affect the batter and recipe.
Salt is salt - so as far as adding salt to a bar - fine salt will almost dissolve where coarse salt will show as crystals in the final soap. Keep specialty salts for decoration and for label appeal.
Salt will basically harden the bar quickly regardless of the type.
Hello. I was wondering when you add in the citric acid and you mentioned that you will need to add more lye, how do you calculate that into your recipe? I’d like to try this method. Thank you in advance and thank you for your video.
Each 1 gram of citric acid consumes 0.624g of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) So for every gram of citric acid yuu need to add 0.624g of lye. Weight of citric acid in grams x 0.624 = the amount of additional sodium hydroxide required.
Thankyou for sharing. I love making soap. Still learning. ❤
Interesting info thanks
Check out this for angles and natural colorants.
Vanilla, or fragrance with vanilla did the same for me. The only difference, I was making a full batch 😢.
youtube recomended me this video... I don't know anything about making soap. And, for the life of me, I cannot even imagine how this is used.
Any of these videos will show you how I use soap scrapers to make each layer of a complex soap. th-cam.com/play/PLNcs8tckb9NCSp9tDBh5gGT46-UNojjhM.html&si=LZF7Cd324TfzdDxn

Nicely done.
Hello! I am from Argentine Patagonia!! I love your work, I want to ask you how to make alum soap in a hot process, when should I add it? thank you!!
Hi there. I have to be honest I have never used alum in soap. However my rule of thumb is if you want add an oil or additive with “benefits” to a hot process you are best to add them after the “cook”
@@QueerBullSoap GRACIAS!!!
thank you for sharing! i have a question, i have made some soap but it feels really slippery when wet and i was wandering what im doing wrong to make it that slippery? i would really appriciate any advise you can give! many thanks and much love from lancashire xxx
Have you thought about felting your soap? This adds a wool layer to your soap which acts like an exfoliant and should help with slippery ness.
@@QueerBullSoap sorry i have never herd of that, do you have a video on it? many thanks xxx
Lovely 😍
Really interesting. Thank you
Great video. Did you put the pot on low please? I have only ever done CP but I really want to try this but I'm a bit scared by it. Thank you
Yes - I kept the slow cooker/crockpot on low and kept an eye out for the Vaseline stage.
You did great. Hot process is not fluid, in my opinion. It's a different beast. I only do hot. I call it the plop swirl. The other thing I like which you did not address is you can cook 100% saponofied and add more expensive oils as a super fat. Thanks for sharing. I have lots of amateur soap making vids on my channel. I learned from Kimberly McNutts TH-cam videos in 2015.
Absolutely - superfat addition after the cook means more of the oils properties survive which means you can get some more expensive oils added and retain their benefits.
So just curious but if curring is removing water from the soap couldn't you put the soap in a dehydrator to cure it faster?
I haven’t tried this personally - but accounts I have read and seen say this causes a softer soap. I don’t know the science behind this. A good airflow across soaps and allowing a natural cure seems to be a better option in my opinion
@QueerBullSoap lol I tried it. It turned your soap into a ball of silly putty
I really like the soap you made. Some swirls in cold process soap are a bit to fancy for my preference
And that’s the important thing - preferences are valid and one type of soap is not better or worse than another - they are just different and each has their merits. I love cold process for the techniques and designs I can do but love hot process for the ability to use it quicker and add super fat oils after cook for additional benefits. I even enjoy melt and pour for its vibrancy.
I made this soap yesterday and cut into 4 chunky bars like you, using 93% & 7%. Big size bar cuts and it makes sense if it’s a utility soap for kitchen and bathroom cleaning. Unfortunately it is all yellow all round the wall of the soap, white on the top and inside. 🙆🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️. My silicon mould is purple like yours, what could make that happen using the same recipe as you? I used 1% Superfat which I’ve never done before, and it is so hard, it actually feels like a thick CANDLE block The soap is so hard that yes, I had to cut with a big strong knife. My question - do I still need to wait 4 weeks to cure. It being so hard and dry? Please do answer, and much appreciated. Ps - Weeks later. The soap bars have turned out fine, all white after the first wash - a lovely lovely very very very soapy bar, it lathers up in seconds. And I can really feel the difference between this and a superfatted soap of 5-7% which are moisturising but more oily for skin use. I use it for handwashing, washing dishes, pots and pans, washing out my bath and sink daily, kitchen surfaces, even small hand washing. No oily residue. It feels like a commercial soap. It’s perfect soap! I am gonna make some more, smaller round ones (the 4 big chunky cuts were too big that I kept dropping them, so I cut them down to standard soap square sizes). in a couple of different colours and an essential oil fragrance. This is one of my best soap feel I have made. So good and so simple I might gift some. With a tiny wooden natural scrubber brush accessory. Thank you again.
So it coke just be some discolouration from the mould it may be that the coconut oil was older - but because this is a cleaning soap the orange really isn’t a worry - and unless the bar has a noticeable smell I wouldn’t be too concerned
Love the terracotta myself, the orange, purples, and the blue -a very strong total blue. Just starting to dabble with micas after resisting for some time, using clays and botanical instead. But I do want to explore more vibrant colours so long as they are not too neon bright like the yellow here. I would probably pastel down those bright ones for me. Thanks for the experimentation.
Could you put soap in a dehydrator?
As I don’t own a dehydrator I can’t confirm this but my understanding this leads to a soft with low longevity. The one option most soapers will return to is a natural cure with good airflow.
Wow, Amazing you can get such strong and vibrant colors with so little powder.
Very helpful, Thank you. I can't Print or Save my Recipe (black window), and when I go back to tweak amounts, it won't let me. All I can do to save my calculations is take screenshots. Is this a Safari issue?
It could be a safari issue. You could also try www.lyecalc.com/ or there is the app soap genie for devices.
Thanks. Yes, I downloaded Chrome onto my Mac and the soapcalc works fine, so it’s definitely a programming issue, i.e. not optimised for Safari browser. A point of note for other Mac/Safari users.
Your soap turned out beautifully. I've always done hot process, but without any colors added. I need to try a simple swirl like yours. Charcoal swirls. Nicely in hot process, if you add it to the top of half your batter, then add the rest of your batter on top and take a teaspoon and manually stir the batter to swirl it. It makes a pretty effect. I did a cold process once and it turned out very nice. I need to do more cold process.
Perfect I love the red and dark green I would like to see it in a liquid soap it will be fantastic Thank you
