    I have CB in my car with SSB. I live near Toronto. There isn’t as much chatter as there used to, but people, mostly truckers still do use it. Ask for a radio check and someone will get back. CB has saved me many hours of frustration on the road, thats why I use it. There is a few people in my neighborhood that use SSB CB base stations. If I’m not on channel 19, I’m on LSB 38. Theres lots going on on SSB, especially right now with the sun cycle.

    Algamentation tape 😅

  • @Hephaestus93
    @Hephaestus93 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I was told that when you use amagamation tape you should start by putting everythign together, wrap from the bottom up and then back down. This is supposed to help ensure there are no areas where water can pool. I also use white electrical tape to protect from UV. White so when it does start to crack you can see black through it so you know its time to refresh the tape. I also found UV protective heat shrink tubes work really well as an outer shell too. Just be careful to not overheat the amalgamting tape as it does not handle high temps well. Im sure there are other experts here who know more than me. Just my two cents.

    FYI, amalgamating tape is also sold under a couple of other names. Some manufacturers call it 'Fusion Tape' and ham radio dealers sell it under the name of 'Coax Seal'. It's all the same thing. Once installed, it MUST be covered with a layer of electrical tape. Amalgamating tape is water proof, but it's not very weather proof. UV radiation in sunlight will destroy it over time. A layer of electrical tape will protect it from UV rays and it will last for years.

    The only time I've heard chatter on GMRS while traveling long distances is either when people are convoying (rare) or hearing kids playing as I drive by (which can be amusing to listen to for a few minutes). The most amusing place to have a GMRS radio is on a cruise ship. I brought the Midland 5w radios and it transmitted from bow to stern. Sometimes I helped relay messages from other "weaker" radios. But for me, while doing long drives it's mostly ham bands that are active. In FL we have SARNET which is state wide and actually saved our tails one time from a bad hail storm on the FL/GA line. I mostly have ham and GMRS repeaters programed in for traveling as they usually reach out the furthest. Simplex on both is usually quiet.

    I'm curious Paul. I have the same Astatic SWR meter. I noticed that when you set the mark with the dial, you went all the way to the power mark at the end of the scale. In the instructions it states to go to the SWR mark which is at the midpoint at 12 o'clock. Which one of us is wrong. The instructions aren't clear. Thanks for the video.

    • @paulethier3416
      @paulethier3416 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m not sure. You are correct the instructions were a bit unclear so I watch a TH-cam video on how to use it and that’s how they use it in the video that I watched. So I could have been doing it wrong. I had a new radio with a new antenna and a new SWR meter and the SWR level was acceptable so I never gave it a second thought.

    I had one of those antennas for a long time. My swr started climbing after awhile. What I found was that the wire inside of the pvc started settling down. I used a small wooden dowel and a few pieces of electrical tape to keep the wire straight. Installed it back into the pipe and no more issues. I eventually gave it to a newly licensed ham radio operator, to help him get going.

      My way was to use a piece of strong fishline attached at the top of the antenna and fed through a tiny hole I drilled through the top cap. Once the cap was back on, I tensioned the line and sealed the hole and line with a bit of epoxy. P.S. A tip to keep away any potential moisture damage which can occur with some antennas, (I learned the hard way) assemble in a dry-air environment, and drop a couple of fresh desiccant packs into the pipe before closing it all up and sealing any gaps.

    Wow that's just amazing, I'm in the same boat, last week, up the bloody ladder and down again, what should have taken me 1 to 2 hours, took me all day, in the heat, my SWR. When I first checked it was 1.3 to 1.2 wonderful , it's up and I Go in and check the swr again and it's up to 2 just out of the red, I looked just like you, I was done. Thanks for letting me know I'm not just the only one, cheers from ENGLAND 💯👍

      Thanks for the comment. It's been a bit of a learning curve for me. Having fun though.

    Great antenna. Looks like better coax too. With mine (DBJ-1 and 60' of KMR400) I get 1.00 SWR at 462.55 and 1.03 at 467.5500. On VHF, this antenna has a steep drop. SWR of 1.74 on 154.5 but 5.01 on 157.5. You can use this for 2M ham too but it's not ideal (2.28 SWR on 146.52). At the end of the day, Height is Might. Good luck.

      Thanks for commenting. Those are almost the same SWR numbers I'm getting too. I was able to mount it up on the house yesterday.

    This video is pretty much convinced me to not bother. I got a free radio and have been looking up TH-cam videos to see how to install it but it seems like the reality is that nobody really uses this anymore. Since Waze gives better traffic advice and alerts, unless we are in a HTF scenario, I really don’t see the point in installing CB at all.

      I would install one, especially if you travel a lot. It’s definitely not like the old days of CB but I feel it could still be useful

      @@paulethier3416 what is the scenario in which you think it might be useful?

      Traveling in bad weather (i.e. fog, snow) or no cell service are the ones that come to mind. From what I've learned it's all about the antenna. If you still decide to go forward make sure you get the best antenna possible.
