70s CB was the rage before cell phones. Now my family uses FB Messenger to do live video chats on the road. Amazing. My "kids" [28-35] can't understand my radio hobby. CB & GMRS are great for family, clubs, caravans, county fairs, swap meets, National Park emergency services, etc. HAM linked repeaters are probably best for constant off grid road coms. Here in SoCal when the big earthquake SHTF, cell phones will be worthless.

H8 is a solid radio. The multi-band antenna can't compete with one tuned to GMRS. Either radio will be a mystery to those used to the Wal-Mart FRS bubble pack radios. Best to program the radio and lock it so NOOBS won't be intimidated. Get or make a base station antenna. It's warmer inside, LOL.

I really like that 15 watt system and the small antenna. Store it in an ammo can let your friends use it on road trips. Zero installation problems using the 12v cigarette lighter. Me, still saving for a 50 watt mobile.

if you were hoping to hit repeaters, most people probably didn't hear you because of privacy tones. each repeater likely is using different privacy tones as well. you should have tried simplex with no tones on both send and receive.

Bought the 8K version. I had a lot of trouble trying to run it off an Ecoflow River 2 Pro (Lithium Ion battery station), which has a max output of only 10AMPs. (I suspect I also connected it to a cheaper 10/15AMP cigarette lighter adapter as well since the copper wire was so much thinner.) After reviewing the docs for the heater, I noticed it says 20 or greater AMPs.🤦🏻‍♂️ Assuming I need to run this off a separate deep cycle battery? Looking for recommendations from anyone.

I use a 12 volt power supply to power mine. I did a video about using a River Pro to power a diesel heater. It works great. I'm sorry to hear you're having issues.

    • @RyanWattersRyanWatters
      @RyanWattersRyanWatters วันที่ผ่านมา

@ This is reassuring. My 8K heater is made by BreAro, but it looks identical to your model. Does your heater also say it’s required a 20AMP 12V connection? I suspect my issue was the cheap AutoZone car lighter adapter kit I used to attach to the out-of-the-box wiring of the heater. The copper wiring of the AutoZone kit was notably thinner than the copper wiring of the BreAro, which tells me it’s not supplying enough power. Thanks much for these videos, btw. They’ve been a great help!

In the Navy and Shipyards, we use the amalgamating tape, Electrical tape to ensure the end stays put, and seal everything with rubber cement. This prevents corrosion from salt water, rain and etc. For enclosed hollow mast poles/antenna housing like you are using, we normally drill a small hole in the base somewhere to prevent condensation buildup. For a good demonstration of condensation buildup, heat shrink a coke bottle over the ends of a piece of pvc pipe and leave it in the sun for for a month or so. I do that to prevent snakes and etc from making homes out of the pipes. Hephaestus93 had the wrapping procedure correct for how we do it. If you use this method the union and the braid will never degrade and last for a long time.

Slim jim build with a ladder line. I did the calculations for a GMRS dipole and it is nearly 1 foot. 465 MHz doesn't require that long of an antenna. That short 6 in antenna might be all you need since it is already a halfwave.

But what I really came here to learn was, what happens if you disconnect the power abruptly and the heater doesn’t go through it’s proper shut down? Anyone? I have programmed the CB frequencies onto my TD-H3 GMRS radio. I never hear anything but static coming through on those frequencies, the static isnt constant so I think it might be a transmission, because it comes in loud then goes away, but maybe I just am not close enough or some other reason not sure. I would love to find out if this radio actually will pick-up CB like it claims or if there is something wrong. I put the CB freqs on my radio so I could listen to Truckers on the road but never hear any talk. As far as GMRS talk, it's sparse in my city and there are two large repeaters but none that are DLOS to me so I cant really use them until I leave me house and drive into the city. I do hear people talking especially as I get close to the downtown area, generally warehouse worker chat and sometimes individuals. Other than that it's very sparse. Which is fine, Id rather have the airwaves open when I need them rather than have to find a channel no one is talking on.

Cb has better range watt for Watt especially in the woods and mountains but only with correct large antenna s and tuning. With a modest 100 watts which is kind of the norm for an expert market cb. You can do a lot. Get yourself 500 watts and talk a long way. But no repeaters and CB handheld are useless because of the antenna size for the band.

We have used simplex in a group, but I haven't tried repeater contacts. I will say that when out West, we heard conversations (over flat land) on a repeater which covered 70 miles of our trip! Of course I am also limited to a "through glass" antenna on my class A motorhome. No ground planes on fiberglass!

I will probably switch to copper at some point but the flex is still working ok. I'm sure as soon as I touch it it will fall apart.

Nobody talks on any of the GMRS repeaters near my location. HAM however are very active all day and night long. I'm not a HAM so I just listen.

Same here. Ham is active and there are no GMRS repeaters yet. I'm hoping to do one at some point. Thanks for leaving a comment.

GMRS works well if you have a local repeater or if you were talking to another vehicle traveling along with you. CB will work better for what you're doing here, but if you really want to reach out get an amateur radio license.

Thanks you for leaving a comment. I do have a CB but I need to get a better antenna. I've tried it before with not much luck.

I only use my cb at night when you start getting tired good to talk to another guy heading in the direction but I can def tell when a car has a cb vs a fellow trucker.

If this is an inbetween device than there is not reason they couldn’t make a thermostat inside a remote.

I would be curious to know did you hook a SWR meter to your Ghost antenna, and if so what was the reading. I have a Midland 50 watt with there antenna coax to a Calie Rays ditch light mount. I ordered a Midland 6 DB gain antenna and the Ghost antenna. The SWR at this point was 3.0 on the ghost and 1.65 on the 6DB. I contacted Midland they sent me a new Ghost and suggested I run a ground wire. Now the Ghost is 2.5 and the 6Db is 1.05. For day to day running around I would prefer to leave the Ghost on it but can not get a clear answer from Midland if this is going to hurt my radio using it with this high of a SWR. Any help would appreciated.

I have a love hate relationship with the ghost antenna. I like the way it looks and the theory of it but the performance for me has not been great. I ended up just going with a 1/4 wave antenna. It works better and the swr is 1.2 vs the ghost at almost 2 and its still low profile. The ghost for me is more sensitive to line of sight than the 1/4 wave. I also have a 6db tall whip I can screw on to the nmo mount when needed. Thanks for leaving a comment.
