Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Mike! Happy turning!
As a chemist, I might suggest mixing in some isopropyl alcohol to slow down the evaporation. Maybe even butyl alcohol, if you can find it.
Thanks for the suggestion, Jesse - unfortunately, the slower drying leads to a patchy finish
@ okay. BTW as a newbie to turning, I find your work and attention to the creative details inspiring. If you knew me, you would realize what a compliment that is. I am not often inspired. 😁
Hi, great video! I ran some numbers using your pricing formula and do see that it does make more sense for bowls larger than 8-10 dia.
I'm glad you agree! I think it's my new go-to for larger pieces. One can still add a multiplier for type of wood/effort/etc.
Taking a few paper towels folded up does an amazing job at reducing the singing, and slightly reducing the bevel pressure.
Thanks for the tip
Hi Mikey, just so I'm super clear here - what does one do with these folded up paper towels? do you put them in your left hand?
@@qbranchwoodworks Yes. you use them to apply pressure to the outside of the bowl opposing the pressure from the gouge. Stewart Batty has demonstrated it for rocky mountain woodturners among others. I believe the reason we are supposed to recommend paper towels is the safety aspect. I may or may not have used gloves, bare fingers and rags in the past... but have found the experience unpleasant...
Makes a lot of sense - when I'm turning on my own, I tend to just use bare fingers, but I could see the safety boon of the paper towels. Thanks for being willing to share!
Nice job!
Thanks David, and thanks for watching!
Wood like to see more info on this device.
I'll put together a video on signing bowl bottoms in the next couple months - stay tuned!
@qbranchwoodworks will do! I've used my little cnc mill, but i can't get a bowl under the bits!
One of those fancy left handed lathes made by AVUGAL. You also seem to favor the modular handles made by snoS dnA retcaR. At least your AVON scroll chuck has the right hand tightening key, mine are all backwards like the drivers in New Zealand. Those look dark for Mahogany. Are they Sapele?
haha it appears that YT flips my image when I broadcast, which is good to know. I've been going back and forth on whether they're mahogany or sapele - they were sold to me as mahogany, but they have ribbons like sapele, but they SMELL like mahogany and aren't as hard as the sapele I've turned. My guess is that this is just darker mahogany, but I'm 50/50 on that
Really nice, brother. Have you made a video on your carving setup? Would like to see that for sure. Mint video
Thanks, Kerry! I'll definitely do a review on the carving systems soon 👍
@ nice! Looks really neat mate👌
Some very good advice here. Thank you. I would have included the need to have the foot undercut slightly to allow the bowl to lay flat and not wobble
Thanks, that's a great point! I'll try to include that in the next version.
Excellent job! I believe this is the one I saw in Niles?
You got it! That was the one. It was fun!
I think I’d try a Mirka 1/4” thick foam sanding pad 600 grit between coats.
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome job! Whats the mounting system that you used for carving?
Thank you! It's the Trent Bosch carving stand
I need this!!! So cool!!! Where can I get this?
I'll be making a video on it - stay tuned!
Very nice bowl and love the artistic application. One question though. Why did you go straight to sandpaper instead of scraping or cutting? Not be critical actually curious to your thought.
Really good question - I was afraid that cutting or scraping would either chip the putty or tear it out completely. Sanding seemed the safest way to actually get a finished product
Excellent step by step tutorial for both types of offset bowl turnings. As a neophyte turner, I appreciate your method of presentation- clear, concise, and visually supported. I have subscribed to your channel immediately looking forward to more instructional tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you very much for watching! I appreciate you tuning in.
Anybody know what that tool is at 4.05?
That's the Sorby spiraling tool
for a small piece of plate the nature grew that massive piece of wood. A bit wasty, no
Not as wasty as the landfill, which is where it was headed 🤷♂️
add some Background Music To make it interesting!
Not what the metrics say, unfortunately 👎
Ugh. So disappointing
Omg. I hold on to too many projects I'll probably never finish. You have to be turning like crazy to do this. Wow
That figuring is sexy.
That vacuume Chuck seems to be the bees knees. Ugh. I gotta spend the money now. Your work is dope.
Wow. Your old machinery does wonders.
Where do you get those?
I printed them! I'll design some that I can sell one of these days
Love this. A threaded box. That's dope af
Ai😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Having a skill is one thing. You got it. People truly don't understand how much work goes into content creation. I've tested the waters on tik tok. That's the easiest platform because all editing is built in. Remembering to record. The editing. People don't understand. It looks so much easier than it is. That's a skill in itself. Great job bro. I'm trying to learn myself. No one really helps so you gotta figure it out in your own. I'm here for your journey.
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Link me to your tiktok?
Great layout and execution. I turn wood as well. Not at your level. So I understand what all has to go into this. That's dope as fuck.
Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous
Thanks Stephen!
I like the bottom bead, nice touch!
Thanks Keith!
Beautiful piece
Thanks Allen!
We can all appreciate your opinions but don't teach them as the rule. What you refer to as calipers are actually dividers. Not a new turner here and I run my Cole jaws between 900-1300 depending on the project. I know several turners with years and years of experience who like to leave the mortis and if it looks good or bad is an opinion. I personally don't like the look of the texturing tool but I don't teach people that is bad and don't use it. Just my unsolicited opinion but I think you would get a lot more views and subscribers if you just show how you make the beautiful things you make without trying to teach. Your Bowls are VERY beautiful.
I hear you, but I can only make videos about my own opinions. If you are uncomfortable with my opinions on the subject, I strongly encourage you to make your own videos saying that the naked mortise is great - plenty of people will agree, and you can form a community around it! My goal is not to grow a subscriber base by not having an opinion, it's to grow a community of like-minded people who want to grow in the same direction. We think the naked mortise sucks. We think epoxy river tables are overdone and kind of gross to begin with. We think 45 minutes of cell phone footage of an old guy rambling in his garage is a rough format for a TH-cam woodturning video. We think we can do better. We try to get better. For the record, this video has 3 times as many views as my next closest video and 10 times as many as my next closest "just make a bowl" video. The controversy feeds the algorithm. Half of my subscribers came from this very video. The like to dislike ratio is nearly 20:1. Unfortunately I think you're wrong about just about everything you said in the comment above, but I do appreciate you taking the time and caring enough to both watch and comment. If you make that video about the naked mortise, send me a link and I'll watch, subscribe, and leave my thoughts below it 👍
Thanks for posting these informative and interesting videos. I'm currently on the home straight building one of these Rose Engines and I keep comming back to these vids for inspiration and for motivation to get this machine complete.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to share some vids when you get set up!
Where did you get the Rose Engine? Love to get one. Thanks. Great video.
Thanks for watching! I got lucky and got the carcass pre-built from a gentleman in the Midwest. I'd recommend reaching out to Rich Colvin @colvintools or colvintools.com - he's the steward of the MDF rose engine project and can help get you started. Great guy.
Looks great!
Thanks for watching!
You’re right about blending the one single cut into the form. Its a lot less work but has to be exact and flow perfectly. It works well on vases - personally, I think even better than on bowls because you can blend one sinuous cut many ways, even cutting a notch in the top and blending down into the cut. I wish I could show you, but you’ll figure it out 😊
Thanks for the additional context, and I'll definitely be experimenting more. You're right about the vase - usually when I want to carve the outside I try to at least do a closed form to show off the outside a bit more. This concept has legs, but the execution wasn't awesome.
An awesome piece and interesting process. Full View and Like 👍
Thanks Allen, I appreciate it!
❤️ the artistic and creative design!
Thank you, and thanks so much for watching!
Interesting techniques.... but I cringe at the sight of that ring on your finger, it's like a scary movie... It scares me more than the wobbling
If it makes you feel better, it's silicone that I've scored with an xacto knife - they break away easily. I break about half a dozen a year around the house
So about that grain matching...
you get RIGHT outta here!
really nicely done and explained, I learned a great thank you!!!!!
Thanks for watching, Steve!
Beautiful work
Love it...wish I had a Rose Engine!
I use a foot like this. I have a branding iron and burn my name in the middle. November the 1st I took 34 bowls to a craft show. I sold 29 and made a ton of money. Everyone had this foot. Not one person thought any different about the foot. I like my bowls a little more thick and the people I sell them to and as a matter of fact I sold the other 5 bowls today. I am not trying to be a turd. I just don't see what the big deal is.
You can still brand inside the mortise of you put a foot around it. We, as turners, know when we're not putting proper effort in. If you sold the pieces, I'm extremely happy for you - just imagine how fast you'd sell them if you finished them! This would be like leaving all of the planks too long after you build a deck. Technically, the deck is a deck, but there's a lot of extra material that's keeping the internal and external shape from matching in a pleasing way. Take the extra time and make something legendary, not just passable or sellable
Thank you for the advise. I know you mean well but I like the way my bowls have turned and and my customers seem to like them too. Since yesterday I have orders for 6 more. After the Christmas rush I will try again your way.
Nice, thanks for sharing
My right ear enjoyed this video
how do I get the grain to match??
nooooooooo I specifically asked for the opposite of thiiiiiiiiiiiiis
Ah, internets. So comfortingly predictable
sir why are you whispering sweet nothings in my right ear 😭😭
hahaha the head cold limited my volume, I'll shout next time so it's less... intimate
So if I can't ask you about the grain match who do i ask
beats me... if I figure it out I'll post a video about it
Dave usually thinks he knows, so I'd ask him
@@guyhilldonDAVE WE HAVE QUESTIONS
You know what they say about opinions? Everyone has one, I just completely disagree with yours and the way you present your opinion is very condescending.
I tried making a video called "your thick, lazy bowls are fine" but nobody watched 🤷♂️
