Hello and welcome, my name is Jason Reef and I just turned 30. I started this channel just to see where it could take me. My life took some turns as life does and after a pretty bad relationship and losing my job because of Covid I started online teaching. This gave me the freedom to become a digital nomad and I am still testing this out more and more.
Next to that I live with my dad who had a stroke 2 years ago, I keep an eye out for him and try to help him where I can.
I also have my own health issues, for 10 years already I have an unknown problem which basically makes me feel sick / nauseos 24/7. I wake up with it, I go to sleep with it. Therefor eating for me has become Russian roulette, I never know what may happen or how my body reacts, even water sometimes can make me feel bad.
After suffering from this for years without any solution in sight and the time just ticking away I decided that enough is enough and I will just force it. So I travel with my "handicap".

A Bali alternative? Private waterfalls, beaches and cenote! Put this place on your bucketlist! Samoa
Talofa! Welcome back again, this episode we are exploring the reasons why you should definitely visit the hidden gem in the Pacific! Samoa has definitely stolen my heart after spending 1 month here I really felt the beauty of it all.
The best part was meeting the people, local Samoans are very warm and open and I had a great time thanks to them. I also made some new friends which made the whole experience so much more memorable.
I tried to capture the beauty of the island as good as I could, let me know what you think? Would you want to visit this place one day and if so why?

Talofa Jason, this place is like paradise. I appreciate all the work that you do to show us around this beautiful island. A big thank you.
I am happy you enjoy it! I do my best ;)
I think is best not to try explain some of those things not right but thanks for trying 🤣🤣🤣 tattoo you are right was done back then and you forget to say we still do it today that's how we keep the culture alive and night market not sad you are just to early not night yet and the church never ever guess God's house just take it in and don't say anything about it or try to explain it real people know more I leave it up to them and God to tell me about it they know better, not other people's family they are real family my aunty and cousin are bury in the middle of the lounge in the house bro respect the dead I sleep with my aunty and cousin on their grave in the house that's how much we love the dead. take care bolo's
Why not? it's healthy to compare things and to analise thing. Yes but I reckoned the fact that I filmed someone getting a tattoo made it clear that they still did it today haha. I don't know until what time the market continued but maybe that was the case indeed, but to be fair it had rained quite some that day so it was soggy and wet. I am sorry I didn't quite get what you mean about the church, never guess what exactly? Sorry but we are taught to question everything in our country and to analise everything so I am not sure what you mean. Wow in your house?? I didn't know that was possible, here that would be illegal. To me like I said that would feel creepy but many cultures have different attitudes to death. We mostly cremate them and that's it really.
Whereabouts are you from originally bro? I can't quite pick the accent...
G'day mate! I am Dutch Australian but always lived in The Netherlands ;)
Just to clarify that I approach everything with an open mind and don't judge anything. I just observe and share my observations and compare it to my culture and customs. :)
You don't have a culture
We own our lands there and the families get buried together. I prefer that than being buried with random people 😂
That’s very interesting 🤔. Here that would be illegal I think. But it’s an interesting cultural difference. Because I wouldn’t find it reassuring if my parents were in my garden.
Aloha Jason, it's so Interesting to see Samoa. Thank you. It looks very nice and tidy place. Also great culture. How was the cuisine?
I didn’t try much of the food there because the quality is made for their stomachs and not mine 😅
Sorry there werent any cabbage soups for your consumption.
what's a cabbage soup?? Sorry but I have stomach issues, I already have problems with food in my own country so that's why I said that. Don't judge something if you don't know the whole story. I wish I could just eat anything from anywhere I go but unfortunately I can't.
My uncle is said to been perhaps the last to go through Iao valley and down onto the Lahaina side. 1970's. I don't about now days.
Wow how is that even possible? Across the ridges?! That’s amazing !🤩
Aloha Jason, good that you are out of there. They are making big money from unsuspected tourist. Take care.
They only tow tourists vehicles though
Really, is there a reason for that? They know if it's a rental? I never had something like this before or in another country so I was definitely panicking a bit haha.
@ of course they know if the vehicle is a rental, tourists pay as they don’t have a choice.
Very sneaky!
Oh yeah towing is a scam in Honolulu. They don't even give you a chance to see the ticket.
Really?! is it like a thing over there? I was flabbergasted by how difficult the whole parking thing was!
@@thecluelesstraveller Yeah thy tow first ticket later. You don't even get a warning. There was a scandal recently where a tow company was scamming people but everyone knows the city is colluding with them. Individuals come last in Hawaii, the rich come first.
Ioa lol
yes I have to change the thumbnail, I ended up switching the vowels, my bad!
TH-camrs take the time to do research in pronouncing of place names in whatever country. Not say the name wrong then quickly say “l’m probably butchering the pronunciation.” Lecture over.🗣️
Yes I ended up switching the vowels, my bad. I generally do my best to pronounce them correct, I know they use a similar pronunciation to ours because they use the continental European vowels and not English ones.
Ive done that Hike. Its a good one!
Hard R or soft A? Let me know below! (I am a hard R person myself😉)
sorry I didn't understand what you mean here....?
@@thecluelesstraveller My favorite word! It starts with N.
@@Pugman69420 You lost me....
your accent is super dutch.
Surprisngly I am Dutch infact, altough it's not as thick as some of my counterparts have it haha
For one lets not forget how all the other hawaiians opposed king Kamehameha and his conquest to establish the kingdom of hawaii... a bloody violent conquest.. in fact if he succeeded in conquering kauai I probably wouldn't exist.. nor would many of my ancestors up to that point.. the kingdom of hawaii didnt even exist a full century.. its about as fake of a kingdom as locals now call this a fake state.. whether annexed or conquered one is as legit as the other.. far less hawaiians died from annexing of hawaii than did due to the creation of the hawaiian kingdom.. king Kamehameha came to power via being a bully.. my ancestors of kauai came to power via feeding all of polynesia.. it was my ancestors that went to south america and got sweet potatoes and also took wives back to Polynesia.. its literally in my dna.. the kingdom of hawaii was the detriment of the hawaiian people and culture.. you can blame white men all you want.. but the fact remains.. every kingdom depends on finances and trade deals.. king david Kalakaua bankrupt the hawaiian kingdom.. then the business men demanded what was promised.. this is why you dont live in debt.. whether a private citizen or a whole kingdom.. hawaiians lost their lands because of king david Kalakaua.. its called the great mahele.. google it.. and the only reason they lost their lands was because majority of hawaiians couldnt read nor write to sign declarations.. so queen liliuokalani in retrospect created the king Kamehameha schools.. so hawaiians could learn to read and write.. because the only true power is knowledge..
Typical imperialist annexationist rationale
I don't know your family history but all I can say is that yes there were tribal wars before the modern times started. Hawaii and the USA had official relations and the USA broke that in a dirty way....
@thecluelesstraveller no they didnt.. crown lands still exist. Therefor the kingdom still kind of exists.. therefor the USA only annexed part of hawaii.. the good or bad of it is only perspective and opinion..
@thecluelesstraveller also if you don't know my family's history then you don't know the whole story..
Is your family so important? What’s your family’s name?
To add insult to injury they've surrounded the palace in the eyesore of asphalt when gardens should surround it. All Dole and other plantation lands should be seized and given to the Hawaiian people but only after remediation. Foreign and even out of state ownership of property in Hawaii should be outlawed. The colonization is still going on today where gentrification is destroying families, driving up crime and destroying the culture and landscape.
I live right down the street the street ❤love iao
Yeah it's amazing!
As someone who is a big history buff, especially with WWII, Pearl Harbor is on my list of places I have to visit, especially since the USS Missouri is my favorite ship, as I'm a Missourian. Also, if it wasn't said, they chose to put the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, specifically facing towards the USS Arizona, signifying the beginning and end of our involvement in the war. It was also done that was so ceremonies hosted on the aft end of the ship wouldn't be facing the Arizona. To many, the placement also signifies that the Missouri is looking over the Arizona and her crew, making sure they can rest easy. Also, loved the video, it really went through the big parts of the attack and the honors that have been given to the place, ships, and people. (Sorry for the long comment)
Thanks for your comment! I figured there must have been a meaning behind putting them together indeed. Put thanks for comfirming that! I guess this would go over some people's heads. A lot of symbolism involved.
So as you noticed I didn't delve to much into the history of the attack itself, because there are plenty of documentaries that do that way better then I can ever do. There is even a minute by minute series on TH-cam. I will leave a link down here: th-cam.com/video/Joh2BXPsrXs/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=WorldWarTwo
Yourvtitle says, “Ioa” - it’s “Iao”
Yes I still have to change the thumbnail once, I changed the title though
Maui has horrible food.
One of the men who died on the USS Arizona went to my school and graduated. My Jrotc class has a gradebook still with his grades and everything.
Wow that's special and very respectful. So many young men died without even knowing what was going on. We must never forget them!
Good point. Haleakala is very deceiving because there are no landmarks to help you measure distance. So it looks a lot closer than it actually is. Climbing back up always feels like forever. You’re right, just because you can see it doesn’t mean it is close.
Yes exactly! You think " I can see it therefor it's close" But the altitude get's you in the end. So don't play around because you will feel the burn in your lungs
How interesting to house sit on Maui. I live in Maui and never house sat before.
Well you already live there so that's even better haha but as you know things are pretty expensive there, I can definitly recommend trying it out ;)

Bro when he saw ISIS truck: Oh god I am fucked 💀
Yes for a hot second I was like "Whut?!" But luckily I know that IS was never in this city so it didn't make sense anyway. But it's definitly very confrontational !
We don’t compare our way of life with yours…we don’t follow other peoples, has others do towards us…
That’s good. It’s good to be independent and live how you want to live. :) if people love their lives than this is the most important ;)
Hey Jason! Love your content. Heading over in December. What did you think re Haleakala vs the volcanoes on the big island? Family is going to Maui and we aren’t sure about spending some of our time on big island or staying in Maui. Thanks!!
Thanks mate! I appreciate that, I try my best. :). Well considering that the big island is still active I would certainly do that one. Haleakala is nice for the views etc But! For car sick people it’s not fun. In that case I would do Moana Kea because it’s super easy to reach, not many curves if you stay at the 3000 M point. Kilauea is active and the south east has big lava fields which you don’t have on Maui (rocky old ones yes).
You didn't get your money back because all rentals here on Maui say they are not allowed on dirt roads. You are on inherited land, and locals don't like unexpected visitors.
It wasn’t a rental. I was doing house sitting so I had their car. The owners promised me to refund me but in the end stop replying. I mean it’s ok but just say it from the get go. So I had no rules or anything. And even if I did, I barely entered a dirt road. Maybe 20 meters max. I don’t think this was some kind of holy land otherwise it wouldn’t look like a dump. These were just thugs. But even if it were locals, breaking someone’s property is not acceptable?! Are we excusing this behaviour? Don’t think that “culture” can excuse malicious actions.
one of the biggest rules when visiting hawai'i, stay on DESIGNATED trails with signs. this specific part of Maui you shouldn't even drive through so PLEASE do ur research beforehand next time:/
Again nobody mentioned this and I hadn’t read anything about this specifically. Just in general that it happens all over the island.
you went through Kahakaloa ofc you're gonna get your car broken into. next time please do ur research and stop trying to frolick everywhere you please in Hawai'i.
Ok so it’s just normal to expect that? I made quite some friends on the island and I did house sitting for locals. None of them specifically mentioned anything about such areas. I wasn’t frolicking around I was just looking around, that shouldn’t mean that you automatically deserve such things. Or are we at this point in society that it’s just normal now? I don’t think so.
Iao Valley…not Ioa…
ooh shoot! thanks mate!

So as off 2013 Moana Loa is NOT considerd the tallest anymore but now it's Mt.Lam Lam in Guam, I don't think Hawaii has accepted this fact yet and therefor they still spread this fact. Thanks to @brienmacgearailt7801
I like the fact that you didn't let a little rain stop you from exploring! Cheers.
Well I am Dutch so we are used to the rain haha, we bike through it every time. But yeah travel doesn't always mean clear skies everyday and you have to use your days so you have to become creative! But sometimes it can be a challenge
Wrong.....Mt.Lam Lam in Guam is higher from base Marianas trench.
You are right, I guess Hawaii hasn't accepted this fact yet haha, I see that they discovered this in 2013. Moana Loa is still the most massive active volcano though. Thanks for the correction! together we all become a little less clueless
Just last week a 76 yo gentleman was rescued by helicopter at Red Sand beach. Every month someone is rescued there. depletes local rescue services. Best to stay out of area. To locals it is Kapu. Don't ask directions to there from locals, they will tell you to piss off or worse.
Oh really? I had no idea, didn't see any signs about it to be fair. It seemed pretty normal to go to. Generally they have big signs but not always so it's hard to know where these areas are sometimes. As far as I have understood they resort to violence sometimes which is a bit extreme in my opinion.

Ah right ok, that's interesting. I thought it was Niihau. They should put some signs there maybe, it's also mentioned online everywhere as a tip to go there so I had no idea
i'm not even watching your video, I'm here to comment on your dumb, clickbait thumbnail. Mauna Loa - Elevation: 13,803' Everest - Elevation: 29,032′ lol Base to top, means fk all.
If you watched the video you understand that it's true and advertised by Hawaii even so.... nothing click bait just facts
Clueless says it all..lol
Ok? explain please... Something obvious for 1 person isn't for the other of course. We are all here to learn
Still haven't learned anything from your feedback so keen to eleborate? Or just here to be negative to people without reason?
@@thecluelesstraveller when traveling you shouldn't be so clueless. ask locals questions & do your research
Obviously if you don't consider sea level, you morons.
At least someone paid attention haha
Talking about driving crazier whilst filming and talking to a camera is funny
We learn how to drive stick shift and have one of the hardest driving exams in the world, Americans would need to redo the exam here because theirs isn't sufficient here. I know how to drive. So driving an automatic on these roads is peanuts. And of course I do it when it's safe
@@thecluelesstraveller the exact kind of attitude that causes accidents. Have fun in your complacency, Mr holier than thou lmfao
I have driven in multiple countries, I always pay attention, I never drink. I know how to adapt. Has nothing to do wtih "holy" or not. In this case traffic was slowed down and I had time to fillm. Simple as that
@thecluelesstraveller complete disregard for the laws because you have driven in other places and don't drink? Brother you need to introspect a little
I never disregarded the law anywhere?? I know myself and that's all I am going to say, I dont have to defend myself to anybody. You are over reacting or looking for an unnecessary fight. I am here for positivity and learning together. I take your comment as advice and thank you for it.
George Harrison had a waterfront estate somewhere near Hana and spent a lot of time there. I knew a guy who worked at an auto dealership in Kahului years ago, who had the pleasure of driving George back to his home after he'd dropped off his car for service. Imagine having a 2 hour long private chat with a Beatle in your car? He said he was a very unpretentious guy. You know you could have just put some of your drinking water in the wiper fluid reservoir and buy more drinking water in Hana. A cheap immediate fix. Too bad you get car sick, that Hana Highway is amazing. The way you went you drove right by Charles Lindburgh's grave.
Wow that would be such a unique experience! I know that many celebrities live there so I guess the chances are high to meet one. Yeah I know but I reckoned I was almost there anyway so I just waited. Yes for me such things wouldn't be enjoyable because I am just to focused on getting through and out of it and not on looking around. Once I took a boat tour to watch dolphines and I took my pill to late and in the end we did see many dolphins but the biggest memory I have is just how bad I wanted to get of that boat, I couldn't enjoy the dolphins. So I learned that it's not worth it when you feel bad, you can't enjoy it. Yes I knew it was somewhere there but I didn't have time anymore to look for it.
George Harrison's place is still owned by his family in lower Nihiku. The place is immaculate and yes right on the ocean with amazing waterfalls during rain storms. It's an amazing place!
Jim Neighbors had a place in Hana. Also Kris Kristopherson still lives in Hana. Has a nice house on the mountain. He's still kicking!
That's cool! I didn't know that
Yeah I read about the famous people living around there! pretty cool but I also heard about all the housing prices spiking up and ordinary Hawaiians not being able to live there anymore
Report him to Airbnb. You were sharing a bathroom with someone who injects himself? The yelling and the whispering. Do your fellow travelers a favor and report him. He will have to clean up his act or get kicked off the Airbnb platform. None of this is the fault of the traveler. If you left right when the troubled started Airbnb would have refunded you. The guy needs to know how to run a hospitality business. He probably get paid by the government to house that guy. Choose one or the other Mr. Owner, hospitality or rehab center.
I gave the owner the benefit of the doubt and I didn't want to leave again and pack my stuff etc, the other stuff I noticed during the rest of the week and yeah if I would have known before I wouldn't have stayed there but I figured I need a place to work and that the rest of the day I would just be away. The owner told me he just started to rent out that particular room and normally doesn't do that. He has only good reviews on Airbnb for the other unit in the front. So I reckoned it wasn't malicious or anything. And I didn't want to be that person that leaves and says "yeah all was fine" and slam him with a nasty review afterwards. So what I did was leave a normal review on the platform but I left him a personal message and honest opinion and feedback, so he can improve. I want to give people a chance to improve. So maybe he did something with the advice who knows. I am not here to judge anybody
Where did you snorkel please?
Basically Wailea area but this was Mokapu beach for example
I would contact Airbnb and skipped out of that place to be honest. Since you've commented about car culture in America vs where you are from Europe I would be interested in your take as to why that is. To me I haven't been to Europe but I have been to Japan and love the public transport there (at least in the major cities as rural places generally need a car) and I think the zoning in America is a big problem. In Japan you can easily walk to a convenience store / drug store / doctors office and all kinds of commercial businesses within a neighborhood. In America that basically never happens. Instead you have huge sections almost entirely dedicated to residential housing and then huge areas for commercial businesses. The only cities I've been to in the US with what I consider good public transport to potentially make a car not needed are San Fran and New York- Manhattan. Both are geographically restricted and hence have a fairly population dense area great for public transport. To a lesser degree Seattle has a somewhat decent although more limited system. America also seems much more spread out and rural. Take your trip to Hawaii for example- was either location you stayed at within 30 minutes of a major grocery store/drug store? Probably not and those are most likely several hundreds of thousand dollar homes.
Yeah I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I just got there and didn't want to change immediatly. But it was definitely strange the whole week. I left him a very honest long feedback but not a negative public one. I want to give people the chance to improve and not be this kind of person that walks away and says "all was good" and smack them with a negative review online.
I think the USA is not very clear on it's own rules many times and they are to flexible with the rules. Taking right turns on red?? very dangerous because it's a window where 2 lanes could meet, aka accident potential. Also on the motorway they can overtake left right or the middle, to me it's like American roulette, Here that's very illegal. You only overtake on the left and that's it. Next to that the teenage drivers learn driving with their parents, they get their licenses as if it was in a Kellogs box. Then there is the customisation stuff, what is this? Disney land? Driving a car is serious, all these crazy things make it dangerous and look more like a game maybe. And yes walkability is non existend in the USA, I also caught myself driving from one car park to another where I would normally just walk that bit. It doesn't invite walking at all.
