Enamels are my passion.
Before becoming involved in jewelry crafting, I spent many years making designs in leaded glass. I was an active member of the Antfarm, a local artists cooperative for several years. I have always loved incorporating bright color and light into my work, so when I discovered the beauty of cloisonné enamel, I was hooked. My work incorporates color, light, and balance- be it abstract or figurative. I'm influenced by all the gorgeous jewelry of the past, but try to give it a modern twist.

Well, this happened... I had a feeling there was something wrong, and it all goes back to the very start of this project. I accidentally cracked the sterling base while I was doming it before enameling. (I am so used to using soft fine silver, and didn't anneal it enough..) It was a BIG crack you could see through. I repaired the crack using my arc welder, but not well enough obviously. The ena...

Thank you for sharing your techniques, if you only use sterling silver for the whole design (I just do champleve so no wires but all engraved) How would you remove the heat tarnishing on the silver after the final fire polish with out ruining the polish on the enamel ? Maybe just the pink polishing paper? But there be no way of avoiding the enamel with this :/ many thanks !! Also do you ever find the barrel polisher chips the enamel ? I’m scared to put mine in 🤣
After fire polishing, I usually go back and do some finer polishing to smooth it out. Start with a 30 micron, then 15, then 9. Follow that with a cerium or fine pumice. It'll polish up the glass as well. If you don't want to do all that, just mask up the glass and use your regular silver polishing regimen. Good luck!
I had an issue in the uk with a new prometheus kiln. The service from metal clay was outstanding and was resolved quickly and a new kikn sent within 2 weeks. The prometheus kilns are a good alternative to paragon. Looks a very smart kiln. We've all been there Sandra. Absolutely hate our tools not working - have a good day
Also. Can the kiln shelf be on the bottom as I was told it shouldn't and has to be raised on stilts?
I wanted to try out a Prometheus Kiln, but the only one I could find here in the states was super tiny. I've heard they are very good. I haven't heard that the kiln shelf needs to be on stilts. Maybe talk to the maker of the kiln and see what they recommend for that. :)
Stunning!
Just beautiful! I love your work.😍🤩
Thanks! :)
Such pretty. Would it be safe to wear that as a pendant without a bezel (if it had a hole in it), or do you definitely need a bezel?
You could do either, but a bezel would protect the enamel better and prevent chipping. :)
Hi have you ever made a video about using sterling silver and gilded method before enameling ?
Hope you've been safe.
So glad you found a happy alternative!! As always, such great information. ❤
Thanks! I'll let you know if I still like this kiln in 6 months... :)
Welcome back :)
Thanks! :)
Thank you for sharing this information with us! So good to see you again…

:)
Wow!!!!
Thanks! :)
Omg! Just cloisonne for this piece!? Dont see that often. Looks amazing.
Yes! Going to fabricate a setting for this one. It's going to be two sided, with the Goddess Athena on the other side... :)
Watching 4 years later and now just learning enameling in school. Looks like it’s time to buy equipment 😏
You can never have enough equipment. Good luck! :)
Wow!!! This is a real masterpiece!!!👏👏👏
Is the wire fine silver wire or steeling. Loved the video
Thanks! The wires are fine silver. :)
❤
Have you used any of the newer sterling silver alloys like Argentum or S-88? I have been using S-88 for non-enamel jewelry making and it is great stuff! It doesn't tarnish or firescale like the copper based sterling silver does.
Sadly, Argentum doesn't play well with enamels. Best to stick with Fine silver, or sterling. I'm not sure what S-88 is. The only way to find out would be to make some tests... Good luck!
I understand. I look forward to what you show us in the future.
How does one colour it ?
Hi Sandra, will the current videos still be available under the new pricing scheme?
Yes! All existing videos are freely available with the new pricing.
Understand completely. ❤
Thanks! :)
Keep making beautiful things keep me in ❤
Thanks! :)
I love how the wingtips of the bee overlap the frame. These are both beautiful, I would definitely wear them.
Thanks! :)
How to learn to create enameling?
Lol I’m literally sitting here playing a game whilst watching your stream thinking I really need to be doing something irl also 😂 Thank you for sharing
Quisiera la traducción al español de este vídeo.
Wow! I'm new here and want to say that leaf necklace is amazing!
Thanks! :)
the color of enamels fade or cloud over time? I thought enamel lasted for centuries!
Sarah is it just normal tap water u used ir do we need distilled water to wash?
Sarah u told us to keep an eye on 1290. The kiln firing at 1434 now??? So what teno is it do we need to wait to put in the pieces n till it reached what temp n how long?.
If you'd like to learn more about enameling, I've got over 150 tutorials on my Vimeo site: vimeo.com/ondemand/sandramcewen/. (Also, my name is Sandra) :)
Sarah after u put the silver foil, u put in to kiln at 1290 n did u say let ut go up till 1430F? And for 10 seconds extra over how many mins? 2 mins 10 seconds total time for each firing, is that correct?
Hi sarah, how hot must the kiln be when we put in the metal after shifting the1st base enamel in for 2 mins.
Do you have to fill the cells again after you have already fired, do you have to fill the cells to the top of cloisonne wires?
You fill them up many times until you reach the top. If you are interested in the whole process, check out my vimeo channel. I've got over 150 tutorial videos: vimeo.com/ondemand/sandramcewen/. Thanks! :)
@@sandramcewen I actually was a member for some months a while back, just now using the grinding kit I bought from you too, maybe I will join again..
@@johnsondylan7515 That's great to hear! Good luck with your grinding and polishing! :)
😊 you are super!!!!
Thank you! 😃
Why do you have to put silverfoil on silver?
Hi Kathleen! You don't "have" to put silver foil under your enamels... I like the easy texture and the extra shine that the foils offer... :)
Hello Sandra! Are you teaching classes in 2024?
I am, but they are all full. I will be posting my 2025 class schedule soon on my website: www.sandramcewen.com/2024-workshops. Thanks! :)
Freaking Amazing!

Can you do a video on how you make your patterns? Like the print out part?
I have a video about how I use Illustrator to make my designs. It's part of my Vimeo Tutorial Series: www.sandramcewen.com/illustrator. :)

Thanks! I'm using a rubber mandrel and various sanding discs with my Foredom Flex Shaft. I do sell a kit with everything you need to grind and polish, except the Flex shaft. Here's a link to my etsy store: www.etsy.com/listing/830188235/grinding-polishing-kit-for-finishing
