Great military history from Great War Huts - a First World War heritage project based in Suffolk, UK.
About the Great War Huts project: Part of a groundbreaking First World War visitor centre; Great War Huts is a heritage project preserving a number of original First World War Barrack Huts, based in the heart of Suffolk, UK.
The rapid expansion of the British Army between 1914 and 1918 was a remarkable achievement. Millions of men signed up or were later conscripted. Accommodation had to be found for all of them and Wooden Huts were the answer. The Veterans who fought in the War have all gone and the surviving Huts are some of the few tangible reminders of a truly great British achievement. Great War Huts is a remarkable project which seeks to preserve a number of original First World War Barrack Huts and record building methods, original archive material and create a register of surviving examples.

I can't tell if the algorithm just wants me to be happy, or if this is a savage burn on my nerdiness.
The CWGC forgot where they buried the body??!!!!! Shameful
Good episode again, my cup of coffee every morning. Thanks Taff and others for this content!
Our pleasure, Merlijn! Glad you are enjoying them. 🙂
@ every year, little light in the dark days of Christmas
@@merlijnveijk855 Indeed!
I have a 1917 SMLE Enfield no.1 mk3
Lovely to see them in such great condition.
They are remarkable survivors!
Always worth listening to Richard. Thank you
It certainly is!
Wonderful video! Looks like the precursor to our modern war games.
Thank you very much indeed. Yes, a definite precursor to PlayStation!
As always, superb talk by Richard.
Thank you very much, Paul. 🙂
I wish there were more pictures published as in albums they are never seen. Then there is the travesty that so few film and pictures are used for articles and TV. They use the same archive footage again and again, and often quite the wrong time frame for the production. There is more out there but so hard to access. I'd love to see anything with the 12 London Regiment, The Rangers.
Another excellent Hutvent, thank you Richard!
All part of the service!!
really beautiful rifle I really wish I had a section 1 license
Very informative Taff
Thanks very much, Paul.
Great to see Richard as a guest, another great Hutvent !
@@russelldoherty5416 Thanks, Russell!
Another superb presentation; very nice to see Richard again.
Yes, RvE is a great bloke.
@@chrisbailey9331 Thank you very much, Chris.
@@paulwarry6287 He certainly is, Paul.
An excellent video, as always. Thanks Taff.
Thank you very much indeed, Andy.
Thanks Lyndsay, the carbine still looks to be quite a long rifle, certainly compared to modern weapons.
Yes, it’s all relative! Mauser G98 - 49.2” Mauser AZ Carbine - 42.9” SA80 - 30.9”
Oh wow I don't see alot of these
Another excellent Hutvent presentation. Thank you. A really clear explanation about how fuzes work and the 'explosive train'.
Thank you very much indeed, Mike. The rest of us here at GWH learned a lot from it too. 🙂
I have one of those shorter pointy 1903 bayonets in Australia, stamped R.F.I. on the end of the pommel. Do you know what those letters mean?
Could it be a '1'? As in 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers?
@Smudger6938 Definitely a I. for infantry probably.
Fantastic content as always guys, Taff I'm probably wrong (as you didn't mention it) but I have also heard that as a lot of high ranking officers were cavalry officers who believed the cavalry would play a heavy part in the war, they wanted a longer bayonet to allow infantry to attack mounted troops, is this just a myth? Thanks so much.
Historically, the bayonet on a musket was the defence - or deterrent - against cavalry, replacing pikes as a separate weapon. I think the design logic was that a shorter rifle needed a longer bayonet to maintain the desired ~6' reach.
@@andrewflindall9048 makes total sense, I'd heard this thing about cavalry too, but it all makes sense either way.
The design was always about the furthest reach. Defence against cavalry using bayonets hadn’t changed and there is no indication that generals who were cavalrymen had any particular sway.
Excellent Lyndsay, you are so lucky to have all these amazing items.
We certainly are!
Wonderful story.
Incredible!
Heia Safari !
Nice one, Lyndsay !
Thank you very much, Russell!
Excellent presentation...!
Thank you very much indeed, Douglas. 👍🏻
@@GreatWarHuts Keep up the good work & Merry Christmas to you all when it comes!
Incredibly informative as always, thank again.
All part of the service, Russ!
Nice detail, very enjoyable Kev. Keep them coming!
Thanks, Russ!
Thank you for a very informative presentation. Some years ago I purchased a Lithgow, Australia-made Mk III SMLE made in 1916. It does not have the stacking swivel, probably removed when the rifle was refurbished in 1942 per stamps on the fore stock. It is a very good shooter with a pristine bore. I load my own .303 and have found an optic mount that does not require drilling or tapping for mounting. I also own a Mauser K98k but prefer the Enfield actually.
Grierson also conducted a wargame in 1905 where he assessed the British Army's mobilisation plans. The results from that wargame led to a major revision of the existing plan. Without this work, the BEF would have been unable to mobilise so quickly in August 1914.
Yes indeed. The first take included a section about 1905 but we decided it made the piece too long and rambling!
The standard of Hutvent films is always high, but this one stands out as especially good. These huts remain as an often overlooked reminder of the Great War in so many towns and villages. Often name The Memorial Hall or similar, they continue to give sterling service to the communities who sent their young men to war.
Thank you very much indeed, Mike! Very true.
Fantastic story Taff, you do spin a good yarn.
Thank you very much indeed, Russ!
Amazing, thank you
Our pleasure, Russ!
Superb as always from Peter!
Absolutely, Paul!
Great stuff, thanks Lyndsay.
It’s a pleasure, Andy!
Brilliant! So nice to see an original Aussy SD cap.
Thanks, Bill!
I’ve got a photo of my Great Grandfather in 1916 with his stiff peck cap before leaving Australia to heading to the UK.
How wonderful!
Thanks Lyndsay, a great piece of history. You can see why the Broderick cap was so unpopular, it looks awful!
You certainly can, Andy, although Taff thinks they are wonderful and has three of them!
Odd comment, but is there a chance that you might be able to confirm the diameter of the main brass tube?... Looking to make a replica for the Channel.... Can't kind full specs anywhere.. the pam shows the length, etc,...but not the diameter... Cheers, and great to see these little known, early pattern grenades.
If you drop us an email and remind us we will ask the Chief Hutbuilder to get measuring!
@@GreatWarHuts Thank you kindly!
@@GreatWarHuts Thank you for the reply.. I am an idiot.. .the diameters for both the tube and the fragmentation ring are in the diagrams found in 1914 Infantry Training... So sorry for bothering you about it... I'm obviously quite blind... It was great video on such an unknown item!
Well done Kevin very informative
Our pleasure, Alan!
That deadpan stare at the end, you can hear him think, "They should have listed to him a year ago"
