Ep. 175 - Death and Defenestration; the Hussite Revolt
มุมมอง 34414 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The Bohemians had already protested against the treatment of Jan Hus when he was arrested and anger was brewing throughout his trial. Hus hadn’t come to Constance on his own. Several noblemen, including the brave knight John of Chlum had come along to support him. One these man, Petr Mladenovics returned to Prague shortly after the trial and recounted the proceedings in every little detail, com...

มุมมอง 37114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today the History of the Germans is honoured to host David Crowther, doyen of the guild of podcasters and host of the most excellent History of England Podcast. Wycliffe's writings were to prove controversial and proved an interesting early echo of the Reformation. They heavily influenced the view of Jan Hus and the movement in Bohemia. And his ability to develop and present those views owed a ...
Ep. 174 - The Trial of Jan Hus - Council of Constance Part 4
มุมมอง 35021 วันที่ผ่านมา
“They will roast a goose now, but after one hundred years they will hear a swan sing, and him they will have to endure.” These were allegedly the last words of a certain Jan Hus whose surname meant goose and who was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. Almost exactly one hundred years later a spiritually tormented monk, frightened by a vengeful God who sought to damn him, was assigned to teach ...
Ep. 173 - The End of the Schism - Council of Constance Part 3
มุมมอง 222หลายเดือนก่อน
We have talked about church reform for almost four years, the council of Constance talked about church reform for about the same amount of time and Luther will talk and write about church reform until he did no longer believe that the church could be reformed. But what is church reform. Or more specifically, what did the delegates in Constance mean when they debated church reform, why did they ...
Ep. 172 - A World Event - Council of Constance Part 2
มุมมอง 270หลายเดือนก่อน
In November 1414 30,000 academics and aristocrats, bishops, blacksmiths and bakers, cardinals, counts and chefs, doctors, dancers and diplomats, princes, prelates and public girls descended on a town in Southern Germany built to house 6 to 8,000 people. They planned to stay a few weeks, 2-3 months max. But 3 and a half years later most of them were still there. What did they get up to? The grea...
Ep. 171 - Cleaning House - The Council of Constance Part 1
มุมมอง 293หลายเดือนก่อน
The Council of Constance marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Catholic Church and the history of Europe in general. One issue on the agenda was the ongoing schism that the council of Pisa had failed to resolve. Another the reform of the increasingly corrupt clergy all the way up to the pope himself. And then there were a number of individual questions this gathering of thousands had to...

“Master Jan Hus, preacher of the Holy Scriptures from the chapel of Bethlehem, was also present at this council, who in his preaching continuously criticized and exposed the hypocrisy, pride, miserliness, fornication, simony, and other sins of the clergy, in order to bring the priesthood back to the apostolic life. He was immensely hated by these pestiferous clerics.” This is how Laurence of Br...

The late 14th and early 15th century was a period of upheaval, the certainties of the Middle Ages, that the pope ruled the world and that knights were invincible were crumbling away, the long period of economic growth, of eastward expansion and conversion of the pagans made way for war, plague and famine. When the Great Western Schism was finally resolved at Pisa and Constance, Christendom rejoiced. Or so we have been told. But was it really such a devastating, catastrophic event that left the papacy mortally wounded, so impaired that it crumbled when next the power of the pope “to bind and to loosen” was questioned? Or was it just an affair, a temporary misunderstanding created by some drafting...

Zahringen inheritance + Waiblingen allods = Swabia, though not the Eastern part beyond the Black Forest. The Salians lost Saxony and Frederick I dissolved it, but Fred II may have made SW Germany his centre of power ....

And don't mention the Zahringen Burgundian rectorship which would have added 'Switzerland' east of the Jura. But no, the communes of Lombardy could put more gold specie in Stupor Mundi's pocket than probably the whole of Germany + the glory that was Rome could put more prestige in his pocket than probably the whole of Germany. Can't blame him. Fast forward to Machiavelli and besides his realpolitik he observed the cardinal feature of Europe was Germany's incredible political impotence (and he might have added France's aggression into this vacuum) Finally, fast forward to Hegel`s dialectic and his excuse that thesis + antithesis = synthesis. Well that is certainly true of England, but not Germany's destiny defying disaster from Canossa, to modern times, where Emperor + Pope + Princes = never ending conflict. You can't serve 2 masters, someone once said, perhaps in Galilee around 30 AD.

Anyone who has not listened to the Wycliff special podcast is missing out on a wealth of information. Not only does it put much perspective on our story here, but it gives a wealth of information on the University structure of the middle ages. Some of the titles of such roles still exist today but never understood why these titles came from. What an important episode and look forward to more of these special podcasts.

the reason for the word liberal arts comes from the Latin word liberals because these were the subjects that were worthy of study by viri liberi or free men so that is where it comes from. How fact is that? Anyway, we were talking about degrees, so you started off with a degree in the Arts and everyone had to do this. If you made it, you became a Bachelor of Arts and in time a Master of Arts. The Arts curriculum was composed of seven subjects divided into the Trivium and the Quadrivium. The Trivium contained grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The Quadrivium was all the mathematical subjects: arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy. And whoever you were you had to do all of it there was no specialization at this level like there is at a modern university. These days you achieved your qualifications by demonstrating that you achieved a set of learning outcomes with defined standards of achievement. That was not the case back then in days medieval. The job of the university was to make sure that the content itself was substantial enough and if you could get through it, then broadly you were there, though as we will see, as a Master you would have to go through at least some kind of specially observed disputation. So, if you achieved this, off you went into the wide world and so on if you wanted to; but you could also then stay on to do a higher degree and this is where you began to specialize and you had three subjects that you could choose. You could specialize in theology, in medicine or in law. And if you then achieved your high degree, that is when you ended up as being a Doctor.

If I had a nickel for every defenestration that occurred in Prague I‘d have at least four nickels, which is more than two and therefore looks more like the norm than weird.😄 Since I now have spoilered the podcast let me keep going: the Hussites would do well to not allow their movement to splinter along radical and moderate lines. Some may be more willing to compromise than others…😏

To think that John Wycliffle’s thoughts made it to Bohemia in large parts because of the marriage of Sigismund’s sister, Anne of Bohemia, to Richard II and a student exchange programme between Oxford and Prague. What an uneven exchange, Bohemia was tainted with new radical religious ideas (speaking as a Catholic here😜) causing instability and war, while England may have gotten some pointers regarding Gothic architecture? Seems hardly fair. Anyway, I hope you know what you did with this episode, Dirk. I’ll expect that when you next quote a primary source or a person you’ll put more efforts in doing voices.😁 Looking forward to next week.

Wonder how all those involved in the trial feel now. To me listening it sounds as Hus had a connection with God. Im almost positive that the others are burning themselves. God said vengeance is mine I will repay. Reasons for my thoughts 1. Thou shalt not kill. Jesus never called for anyone to be killed for rejecting Him. 2. There is 1 instance where 2 apostles james and jon askef if they should call fire from heaven to consume a village that rejected him. Jesus told them no. The Catholic church had become the medieval age Pharisees from the Bible...Them killing Hus har the opposite effect spoiler lol. I learned about Hus in school here in America. Love the content. Very good question. There was a transition from just being called “king” without a specific geographic term to King of the Romans. The latter title has been in use occasionally since Henry III and by Frederick II is fairly established. But nailing this down is tricky…
