Bare Root Rose Update - Lady of the Lake David Austin
How is the bare root rose doing? Let's take a look.
I planted this David Austin "Lady of the Lake" rambling rose in April and now it's November. It's been planted here for 7 months and this will be it's first winter in my garden.

Can you plant Potatoes in July?
มุมมอง 2612 หลายเดือนก่อน
What happens if you plant potatoes in July? Let's harvest and find out... This year I fell behind and planted my garden on July 1st, and that included potatoes. Usually, potatoes are planted in spring so this was an interesting experiment. There were both benefits and drawbacks for this crop, and I'll explain them as I harvest these potatoes near the end of October.

I always mull over it for what seems like weeks before starting. I don't have a woodworking background but love to build my own projects. I am concerned with mold and wood in this environment though. Any issues? Videos like this help. Thanks!

    That was great information! I have both Leaf Mold & Compost Piles. I know Leaf Mold can take two to three years to finish. I did shred my leaves through my Ego lawn mower twice. I. Also added blood meal to kick start it. It will therefore first be broken down by a bacterial process, then when the nitrogen runs out it will be broken down by fungal decomposition process. I’m hoping that this will enable me to get my g\first batch of leaf mold in less than two years. I want to use as mulch primarily, but have garden straw for this season as a fail safe. The compost should be ready in the spring!

    I found some lost 2023 potatoes this spring, in a covered bowl in the basement. They'd sprouted and woven together in a bowl-shaped mass. I teased them apart and planted them in June (Ontario here, only kale lasts to Nov.) Anyway, they outperformed seed potatoes! Next year I'll see if I can repeat that on-purpose. Great videos! (I have the same wheelbarrow, with the same my-paint-peeled-off issue. It's a beast, though)

    Kate, Your pergola is great, I would just like to ask you to give us the dimensions. You had to have them because you can't do it without drawings. If you don't have it, try to measure at least the overall dimensions. Thanks and greetings!

    • @KatesGarden
      @KatesGarden 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I don't currently have drawings for this project but I did measure some of the dimensions for an other commenter: "Sorry I don't have a diagram but I can give you some of the key measurements. The upright "posts" are 80 inches long and the top lintels are 48 inches long. (I think I bought five 2x4x8's and stretched the one for the top lintel as far as I could 😋) I used 24" wide mesh so I made the side openings to fit. It ended up as 24-5/8" opening so the mesh had a bit of space on both sides but still good overlap on the 1x2 that it's mounted to. I remember thinking that it looked HUGE once I had the pieces cut. But if you have the space for it and you plan on having climbing plants, I think this is pretty much the perfect small sized arbour because the plants will use some of the space. Hope that makes sense, YOU CAN DO IT! 👍"

    Im looking to adapt a similar design to keep some planted hibiscus shrubs safe through the winter without digging them up...hopefully. How sealed do the edges, lid, and bottom need to be, or is there room for having a few gaps?

    • @KatesGarden
      @KatesGarden 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That could certainly be done 👍 The sealed edges part is tricky. Depending on your nighttime temperatures, it might need to be locked up tight. But if it’s sealed well it will certainly need to be opened during the days for ventilation but also it might get too hot on a sunny day even in winter. Unfortunately, it’s a judgment call on the best choice for winter care Thanks so much for watching, I hope the hibiscus make it through the winter 🌺

      Thanks! This is such a great question and something I was considering while I was planning. My goal was to use this greenhouse just during the spring so the sun would be lower during the day. By the time summer approached and the sun higher, it would be warmer and the greenhouse not needed. (So I should be planting, or the more tolerant plants can sit next to the greenhouse outside to make more space) Also, because the upper shelf is only half as deep, it lets the light into the back more easily. If more light is needed, the greenhouse could be built taller so the upper shelf can be higher. Hope that helps, thanks!
