Hi Everyone, This is a recording of a question and answer overlayed onto a video of me carving a sphere. The questions have been sent in through Instagram and they aren't relating specifically to the carving of the sphere but rather of the practice as a whole. I hope you enjoy watching.

The crate builder is a bit of an artist as well. Very clean.
it's very impressive 🏋♀🏋♀
is it a number 1 gouge or a dead flat chisel with a curved edge ?
i should have been carving insteed of wachting you carve but i did enjoy it . Thanks
It's nice to see you at work. Happy Holidays 🎄☃🎄☃🎄☃
She’s locked tf in
Looks so peaceful
She has some holes to fill
How many hours has she put in on that project wow 🤩
It took about 3 months to carve the surface texture following the annual rings :)
Imagine getting close to that lady and going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Youd all be super fun at parties lol
Such a beautiful workplace! Look so comfortable and all those chalkboards and all its so cool 😊
I love the technique
Good morning 🌅, very nice work,
That is surprisingly meticulous work on such massive pieces...
Nice work
Lovely set up , n i could see that being a bauble (i could imagine it being used for other things too but at this time of the year n all) like a nordic style, as is but for me i would gold leaf that bad boy ❤
Very nice project,
Don't know what it is but it's awesome
I could see those as a decoration feature on the posts of a 4 post bed
Good morning 🌅, love it , have you had signs of carpal tunnel syndrome?, From constant pounding and use of your hands and wrists., I am now in my 70s and I am now suffering very badly, going to have op this week, keep up the amazing work all the best for the future, from France
Good luck with your op. I have had problems over the years but currently my hands and wrists are ok. I take supplements advised by my osteopath which I think may help….. These days I don’t carve all day every day - I’m sensible about taking breaks and keeping supple. Hope you’re back to carving soon :)
Not going anywhere for a while?
Groovy
Topography
This is an impressive project.
There's a certain time warp that happens when an artist harmonizes with their tools. You'll know it happened by how sore your back is when you resurface. This guy may need some tylenol in about 6 or 7 hours.
When this is finished, it's going to look great. I love the concept.
Wendell Berry talks about human powered tools in one of his essays and how power tools force you to think and work at an industrial speed
Watching from Vancouver Island 🏝️🇨🇦👍

Good morning 🌅, Truly beautiful work, very interesting territorial, And I have done some wood carving, et cetera many years ago I made 14 chairs for one of university in Cambridge, And back in the late 70s early 80s I had a contract to make some bedroom furniture along the lines of Louis 15th style, where I made a very large headboard bedside cabinets, chest of drawers and two radiator casements, all out of Japanese oak, I still have somewhere between 150 to 200 wood carving chisels, and a lot of those are very old as I used to pick them up at auction rooms when they’re very cheap, Keep up the amazing work I think I’ll be following your journey to see what you make over the years, I am retired and now living in France,
Thank you Alison for this magnificent report, I appreciated when you talked about working by hand and not with electric tools, it's true we are closer to the material and the spirit.🌞🌞🌔
Ah you are right Pierre 🥰
Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your wisdom … 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you Kate
So cool, thanks for sharing

@@Freakymum-l1c Hello! And thank you 😊We are in the UK, in the south of England half way between London and the south coast. Near a small town called Midhurst.

Perfect Love it
I am so mezmerized by this channel. I can't believe how few views it's getting.
Thank you 🙏🏼Spread the word please :)
Great series and really enjoy hearing your insights
Thank you Johnathon
Even as a woodworker myself, I was truly blown away watching this. This is truly inspirational work. You have created works of timeless beauty that beg description. Warm greetings from France. ❤🙏
Thank you for your kind words. I like the work to speak for itself but we are trying to gradually build a good insight into what I do in a gentle way that is authentic.
@alison_crowther Hello Allison, Your work truly deserves the very highest praise. Due to it's monumental size it must take more than simple inspiration; also courage, insight, knowledge of the material and its behaviour, and only then does the know-how and the dexterity kick in. You have created a very unique genre. My very warmest greetings and wishing you worldwide success, if it's not already the case. 🙏
This is literally bending my brain, I can’t imagine seeing this in person and running my hands over it. Absolutely incredible
Hellos , just came across you channel. Great work ! Question , is all the wood y’all work with a hard wood ? Any work on soft woods ? A big Hello from TEXAS !
Hello Gilbert, we usually use hard woods, mainly oak and walnut, but I have used cedar occasionally which technically is a softwood and definitely easier to carve than oak :)
SUPERB!!!!
The desk is one of the most amazing pieces of functional art I've ever seen (I watched the later episodes). Can't imagine the price The ball looks like an apple with a few bites taken from it. Gorgeous work all the way around
Awesome Job! one day I will be able to make my dream of being a sculptor be true!
What an awesome concept. Incredible.
Fascinating!
