Renting Oregon's Bald Butte Lookout
Skip ahead to 07:32 if you don't want to see the drive. On July 3-4, 2024 I rented the Bald Butte Lookout in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. The cabin needed a new coat of paint, a good cleaning, and some other TLC. In addition, this lookout is infamous for flies. I ended up not sleeping or cooking inside the cabin. But the location is beautiful, the sunsets are gorgeous, and the stars are amazing.

North Mountain Lookout
มุมมอง 152ปีที่แล้ว
I spent $247 to spend one night in the North Mountain Lookout, the most I've ever spent on a lookout rental. After being abandoned for many years, it was fixed up by volunteers and is now in great shape. As I mention at the end of the video, this is not the place to go if you have an aversion to loud noises. Fighter jets on training flights from Whidbey Island can and do fly over at any time, a...

When you turned off the PCT onto the Elk Lake Trail, which skirts the south side of Bear Lake, there would have been a nearly immediate left turn down a steep trail that would have taken you to Acker Lake. This is the Old Cascade Crest Trail, which predated the PCT. The berries at 5:30 appear to be bog bilberries. Did they taste like apples? They are delicious, especially when warmed in oatmeal. Lemei is pronounced in three syllables, as Lem-ee-eye. I and a friend happened to be fishing at Goose Lake that Saturday when you filmed this video. We saw red tape, blocking off the side roads on our way up, but didn't know what was going on. Everyone else at the lake suddenly left, and we fished for a couple hours in the smoky gloom, which we just thought was caused by the Eagle Creek Fire, which we had stopped to view from the Cascades village next to Bonneville Dam. We didn't know anything about the East Crater Fire until after we got back into town that evening. The drive home was eerie, with burning fir needles and clusters of burning leaves raining down on the windshield for much of the way down Highway 14. Lake Toke Tie is at the southern foot of East Crater. Most of the trees around the lake burned, but the area is beautiful again now. Last summer, I camped in the small meadow that is the high-water outlet creek for the lake. I only saw two other people visit the lake during my three night stay. The two men were nearing completion of visiting all the named lakes in Indian Heaven. I informed them of a crescent-shaped lake near an abandoned section of the old CCT, south of Tombstone, named Harty Lake, which isn't named on most maps. I had found it the day before. They thanked me and headed south to visit Sebago, then possibly to look for Harty. I have only to visit Race Track Lake and Green Lake to complete my list, and to reach the summits of Sawtooth and Bird Mountain, to finish off the other. I had hoped to visit all of these locations this year, but my mother passed away on June 30th and I will be very busy for the remainder of the summer. Maybe next year.

35+ years of hiking and climbing Glacier. from 1982-2021 (some school years in Missoula) put on well over 5000 trail miles. 100+ peak summits, hundreds of nights camping, dozens of lakes fished, and hundreds and hundreds of miles of spring biking during plowing..... no problems until early 2000's. then it just got progressively worse.....to real bad about 2005 or so, i adjusted for crowds by arriving before sunrise. that worked for a little over 5 years. after 2010, things went crazy. TOO MANY PEOPLE!! then they allowed guns, allowed e-bikes (on close roads during plowing season), and finally instituted the reservation system. the throngs of "newbies" were inconsiderate, rude, arrogant , privileged, assholes. not all of them - but too many of them. all the friendliness that attracted me to the Glacier area in the early 80's was gone.....totally gone. everyone was "on edge". ENOUGH!! i moved the hell away.....and so glad i did. people aren't assholes everywhere. i don't miss the people in NW Montana - not a bit. but i do miss the Park. but new adventures in the Andes with friendly people is a good remedy ECUADOR RULES!!

I would guess that anyone alive in 1980 and in the PNW at the time will never forget the day Mt St Helens erupted. I was on the east side of the state and we got the new of the eruption before the ash reached us. I will never forget looking out towards the west and seeing the black cloud on the horizon looming towards us. Can't believe that Spirit Lake still had so many trees in it!
