Census Records: Your Secret Weapon for Finding Lost Relatives
The LostCousins Approach is Unique. As your family tree grows, uncovering new ancestral lines becomes increasingly challenging, especially when records from earlier generations are scarce or hard to access. That’s where LostCousins comes in, offering a unique solution to help you connect with relatives researching the same ancestors.
www.Lostcousins.com
In this video, I’ll explain why LostCousins stands out from many other genealogy websites. Unlike most platforms that rely on family trees, LostCousins uses census entries to find your living cousins. I’ll show you how their system automatically and accurately matches you with other family historians - all while keeping your data private and secure, which is a big deal for today’s researchers.
If you're looking for a new way to knock down those 'brick walls' and make new family connections, this review of LostCousins will show you how.

    one more warning - Ancestry has a school year book database with images. Each yearbook page likely has multiple to many images. I'm finding more and more of the names/images not being correctly linked. I've been clicking to notify them of the errors, but they are legion.

    I switched from RM to FH after v8 came out -- anyway - just wanted to say that you should also save source images to your computer as well. Ancestry sometimes removes them or otherwise makes them unavailable (this is true for familysearch as well) probably due to contracts with the holders of the originals. Example, Ancestry used to have marriage license application images for Indiana. Now they have the same database, but no images attached.

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy
      @Beaumont-Genealogy 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When you sync RM <> Ancestry it should download all images (both yours and Ancestry's) to your computer.

    Thank you so much for your honesty. I've been using FamilyTreeMaker for several years nows as my backup (plus downloading GEDCOM every month). The features in FTM far exceed anything that Ancestry will ever been able to do and I've been told it's because FTM is a software program, whereas Ancestry is not. Last night I decided to try "pro tools" OMG within 30 minutes I was back to FTM to clean up my "duplicates". ProTools is terrible. In FTM I don't have to have a source for what information I inputted whereas in Ancestry I had over 6,000 of my 12,000 people without any "source". Well those 6,000 people are from a historical book called 12 Generation of the Tremblay Family written by Thomas LaForest in mid 1900's and they updated in 2012 with assistance of the late James LaLone. I'm confident that many serious family genealogist have many sources of information, bibles, family stories, writers in the family etc and why would they identify the "source". I'm certainly not going to upload the a word doc for every Tremblay person in my tree. The document is over 1500 pages. Now I was very leary about this Pro Tools when it first came out and I thought, oh maybe just try for a month. Lasted 30 minutes. Again, thank you so much. I'm now off to my FTM to fixed my 325 duplicates where as Ancestry had over 1,000.

  • @user-wv6wq1ck3k
    @user-wv6wq1ck3k 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've spent the last several days merging duplicated people on my chart that were obvious errors which I became aware of. However, I've also found quite a few that don't appear to be errors at all but simply have a lot in common with the supposed duplicate which must have been enough to generate the error. One thing that concerns me is that merging individuals could create some serious issues for your tree if you do it wrong although I feel like I've cleaned up a lot of mistakes. I've started checking my tree before I add any new individuals to it, that's how this happens in the first place.

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy

      Your experience is pretty common. Until about 100 years ago it was common to reuse names if an infant had died and families reused names of grandparents and parents so you could have a number of people with the same name. I treat Ancestry's duplications as hints more than anything else. In my tree less than 20% were actual duplicates.

  • @nairbvel

    I have a massive family tree on Ancestry, covering a lot more than just immediate blood relatives. (I even discovered an entire -- big! -- "lost" branch of the family in the US Midwest that was lost due to some disagreement in my great-grandparents' generation.) Several cousins have begun their own trees, and since those often trigger hints on mine I check them out periodically -- and I keep finding errors that I had to work to keep out of my tree. The general practice for most other "tree keepers" in my extended family is, "Ancestry suggested it so it must be correct." :-( I also use other family tree sites, and there's one that has hidden links between trees that can introduce egregiously bad & obvious errors that cannot be corrected. Apparently there was an Italian actress in the 1930s whose stage name was the same as one of my aunts' actual name, and the actress suddenly began showing up in my tree without my having anything to do with it. Shortly after deleting her (which took some real work to accomplish), I received a very angry email from someone I'd never met claiming I had deleted a whole section of her family tree. Nothing I said could convince her that her aunt and mine were NOT the same person simply because "they have the same name so they're the same!" <sigh> So now I have a permanent "ghost" in my tree that doesn't belong there. Be glad Ancestry doesn't do this...!

    Thank you. I was not familiar with those other tree checkers. I have a massive tree, and "Thrulines" is a pain and has caused numerous issues and duplications. I have 28,000 people, with 1485 in duplicates, according to Ancestry, and 3000 people that need sources. The sources for those people are most likely in-law cousins not blood related, where I don't hold the time value for in creating my tree. I have really loved the process of this research and discovery.

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy
      @Beaumont-Genealogy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment - I would certainly recommend Family Tree Analyzer (free) to help you with checking your tree. Having no sources is not a big deal in my opinion if the people are not in your direct lines of research. Many of the duplications in Ancestry might be false and due to similar names or birth dates.

    I agree protocol should be 100% free regardless. And here’s the pros and cons to it. The pro side is that it tells you where to to work on. The inside it can mess up your tree very easily.As guy sends 12 hrs a day on my adopted family none made past 5 generations. I made to 12 generational this point. Were to start everything from 1950 behind should make sense. Your 1st should Something like a birth certificate or maybe first communion or something kind of tieimg you that person. This way, you can have their name and date a birth and then you should ask them hey who were you born and now you can start doing your genealogy. As you progress, you’re going to have cences 1950 to point of death. As a person who does this all the time, make sure you get there first name their last name and the city and and where they were born. Those senses reports can then make sense so you can suck one backwards don’t skip out if there is a 1950s, then a 1940s and a 1930s and a 1920s you should be able to get all those without a problem and you should not go forward until you get those. Then you’re gonna wanna tie it off with a dust certificate or something from the journal sentinel saying something about the obituary and then go to their husband or wife and start that process again. And you’re gonna write down all their first names and last names to the point where you’re gonna feel comfortable with those names and I’ll keep that in mind, I would start with two binders, one for the father one for the mother, you’re just gonna keep going back like that and when you get to the second generation, you should have no errors at this point. When you will start getting into trouble is if you go right into senses or you’re using and copying and with somebody else’s information. It’s not gonna make a big difference if you use the ProTools or not it’s gonna do it’s just aggravate you and make you wanna quit so just one person at a time and just keep going through it.

    For the average user it's a once in a blue moon thing as far as I can see. The enhanced shared matches is handy for pinpointing matches who are closely related to each other (usernames don't always make it obvious). Once you know x is a sibling of y and they are half sibs to z there is nothing much more to learn about them . If they get just 1% of their 25 million dna database members to pay each month they will earn $2.5 million per month. It's not like they have done much to earn it either, thy are simply selling us the info they gathered from the test kits we paid for. They've been banging on for months about free 'features' to encourage collaboration but Pro Tools does the exact opposite and makes them a hefty profit into the bargain.

You often must add a duplicate to get ThruLines to work. ThruLines shows the person is not in your tree when they really are. So, you add the person again to get down another level on your ThruLine and then go to merge the people. If you forget, then your duplication persists until you find it through some means. You sometimes you get dups when you merge in another users suggested tree content. Ancestry should be identifying such dups when they are entered. Right then and there. No wanting to charge you later to get them out.

      Thanks. The new maps and fan functionality were pretty interesting, but the duplicate and error checking are very poor (and very expensive - you could buy most personal computer genealogy software for less)

    I have a brick wall prior to 1841 census. He was deported to Tasmania in 1829. No record of his death or anything after ticket of leave. He married in Penicuik Showing he was a soldier in Dumfries-shire Militia. No parents or birth place. On his convict record it shows him born Dumfries and 45 years old. Can find no birth for that name in Dumfries. He was also a master shoemaker. as all his sons were. This has been a block for 20 years. Can you give me any idea if it is possible to break down this wall

      I am sure you have explored many avenues, but as you saw in the video, many of the people I researched had no baptism or marriage records. Did he have siblings or children that you can focus on? Do you have any other records confirming Dumfries? Single sources are problematic. Why would he marry someone from Penicuik, a long way from Dumfries? So, the two steps I would suggest are looking at the wider family and questioning everything you think you know. Genealogy is a maze, and sometimes, when you hit a wall, you must retrace your steps a little.

      Because he was stationed in penicuik it doesn't give a clue to his birth or parentage. Marriage only gave names and that he was a private in militia. and was deported before 1st census. I can't think of another avenue.

      Beyond siblings and children, have you investigated anyone else who was deported or charged at the same time as he was? People from the same area often tended to stick together when emigrating. I once traced a family member in World War One by finding people who signed up for his regiment at the same time.

    You should update this, because Ancestry announced (at RootsRech) that Protools will soon include something else: info on how our shared matches are related to each other. For many people, that makes Protools worth the price. It should enable us to figure out who some of our "mystery" matches are. That includes the ones that don't have trees, and/or those that only provide their initials, rather than a full name.

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy
      @Beaumont-Genealogy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, as soon as they release something, I will do another comparison video. I will include the MyHeritage Tool Set as well as they have improved their functionality. It would be interesting to see what Ancestry means exactly by Shared Match relationship because you can already do this to some extent via common ancestors, filters and ThruLines. As for people who choose to stay anonymous or don't post trees I am not sure how they will do this, so I am very interested to see.

    Very interesting. What was the error that Ancestry found that Family Tree Analyzer didn’t? If I know what the error it found was I can add that logic to the new version 10 for Family Tree Analyzer. Btw it’s a deliberate design decision not to edit someone’s tree in FTAnalyzer. That is because by making the user the sole arbiter of whether something should be edited or not they retain complete control over how the data appears in their tree and never need to worry about FTAnalyzer changing something they want to keep.

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy
      @Beaumont-Genealogy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks - the lone error that Ancestry picked up was a son born to a woman aged 13. I don’t think FTA needs to be changed for that, as FTA works before 13. Anyway, I would say my analysis was just a high pass. More to show that PRO TOOLS Tree Checker was very basic at the moment, and FTA (or RM) is still a far better option. I plan to do a more detailed error analysis when the new version of Family Tree Maker is released later this year between Ancestry, FTA, FTM, and RM. I was also planning to do a more detailed overview of FTA too - it is such a great (free) tool that so few people use or even know about.

      They have no choice but to continue to improve PRO TOOLS as they are very basic at the moment. I am surprised that they have not simply bought a current tree analysis tool and integrated it with their product rather than trying to reinvent the wheel themselves.

      For sure many people need to show more responsibility for their debts and it could be the case that it is too easy to walk away from debts. However, imprisioning someone until they pay doesn't seem like an optimum way to clear debts either.

    • @Kit_Bear
      @Kit_Bear 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Beaumont-Genealogy No, not the optimum way but it certainly acts as a deterrent for getting into debt in the first place. Samuel Pickwick did it on Principal, a protest as you will. Sam Weller did it out of loyalty to Pickwick. Now Mr Jingle/Captain Fitzmarshall was a deserving conman character Whom did deserve it and many of the time did deserve it. While I disagree with many aspects I also support many too, a balance if you will consider the effect of fear of punishment for getting into debt to begin with. I don't agree with the way it operated so a reform would be in order but I believe a reintroduction could be beneficial to reducing the dependency of those who are on a subsistence income. Debt management lies solely at the door of the debtor. Do they really need that latest Iphone or 75in Qled TV?

    Your timing on the release of this video is quite fortunate. I say that because Ancestry has recently announced the release of ProTools (or something similar) which will be used to do some of the things that can be done with this free software. Of course Ancestry wants to rake in more $$$ from existing customers (by charging $10.00/month) and add to it's massive profits! Having another option beyond the money-grab from Ancestry is definitely a good thing. Thanks so much!

    Great video. I have noticed that in my ThruLines hints sometimes the green dotted line boxes are already in my tree ( and sourced ) and should be colored white in my ThruLines hint. That provokes me to click the add button to turn the ThruLines green box to white. Do you see any problem doing that ?

    • @Beaumont-Genealogy
      @Beaumont-Genealogy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That happens a lot and often it is an indicator that there are differences between the two people which need to be addressed. You do have to be careful not to add the same person twice which could happen. If there are minor differences and you (or your match) can correct them so that both people are identical the give ThruLines time to catch up. It could be something as simple a date written in a different way. So look carefully
