Recovering DaVinci Resolve Projects Summary Notes:
Best Practices for Future Protection
Avoid deleting project files: Instead, create a bin folder for projects you no longer need.
Enable project backups: Ensure that project backups are enabled in DaVinci Resolve Preferences.
Use the 3-2-1 backup method:
3 copies of your data.
2 different storage media.
1 off-site backup.
Step 1: Back Up Your Database
Open DaVinci Resolve.
Go to your Database Details.
Perform a database backup to ensure you have a guaranteed restore point.
Step 2: Locate Project Backups
Go to DaVinci Resolve Preferences.
Navigate to User, Project Save and Load.
Note the location where your project backups are saved.
If project backups weren’t turned on, recovery might not be possible. Check your back up settings are fully set up for future fail safe.
Step 3: Find the Backup Folder
Click Browse to navigate to the project backups folder.
Right-click on the folder and select Show in Finder (macOS) or Open in Explorer (Windows).
Step 4: Use Database Software
Download and install Database Browser for SQLite (use the provided link or find a trusted source).
Open the database browser software.
Select Open Database and navigate to your Resolve project backups folder.
Sort the files by Date Modified to find recent backups.
Step 5: Identify and Open Project Database
Open the most recent folder and locate the most recent project.db file.
In the database browser, go to Browse Data.
Use the dropdown to find the SM_Project table.
Scroll until you see project_name to identify the project.
Step 6: Make a Backup of the Folder
Copy the entire folder containing the identified project database.
Place this copy on your desktop or another safe location.
Step 7: Prepare for Recovery in DaVinci Resolve
Open DaVinci Resolve.
Go to a local database (even if the project was from the cloud).
Create a folder called Recover.
Click on Details and select Reveal in Finder.
Step 8: Copy and Rename the Project File
Copy the most recent project.db file from your backup folder.
Paste it into the Recover folder you created.
Remove any additional numbers following the .db extension so it reads just project.db.
Step 9: Reopen DaVinci Resolve and Load the Project
Restart DaVinci Resolve.
Navigate to the Recover folder.
Your project should now appear and be ready for use.
Export the project as a backup file to use in any database, including Blackmagic Cloud.

    It doesn't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I got the black screen earlier today and I followed your tutorial and fixed it. Then it happened again, and now your fix doesn't work. Not only that, but I've been using Saver/Loader nodes which initially helped but now I seem to have lost the masks again. What do you recommend?

    • @TimBelchamber
      @TimBelchamber 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because it worked initially, and your problem reappeared I’m will assume the issue is elsewhere: Black screen glitches can often be caused by text elements. Try disabling text / assets around the issue to make sure it’s definitely your magic mask. Black/glitching can also be the result of your computer running out of graphic memory or your gpu not being able to keep up. Make sure you have at least 100gb space left on your device so it can memory swap efficiently. If you are still struggling, I’d delete the cache folder for davinci resolve and let it rebuild cache. If you give me more information on the actual problem you are having I may be able to help further. I haven’t used saver nodes, so unsure if they are potentially adding issues. It’s also worth noting that if you aren’t doing a remote/heavy workflow, you could just render in place your masked video in prores 4444 or another codec that preserves alpha.

      @@TimBelchamber I suspect my installation of DR may be glitchy. I've noticed that (sometimes) when I go into the Color Page and click on the MagicMask button, nothing happens until I click on other buttons like Blur or Key right next to it, then when I go back to Magic Mask, I can enable it. I'm planning on reinstalling DR, but because it scatters files all over my system and I'm in the middle of a project that's behind schedule because of Magic Mask, I'm extremely hesitant to do it right now. Regarding the other items in your comment; There's almost nothing else on the timeline except clips. I'm pretty sure the problem is Magic Mask. As for my system, I'm running it on a 2023 Mac Studio M2 Max with 32GB Ram and 177GB still available on my HD. All files are on the HD, not my external drive. My Render Cache is set to "Smart" and I did render in place using Quicktime/Apple ProRes 422, but the result is a clip with a black background that I can't get rid of. A weird thing about the Saver Node, it only seems to work intermittently. Earlier, I got good results, but after a few passes, it also appears to lose its connection to all the files it saves (as I was working through the problem, I noticed the title of the node turn red and 75% of the frames disappeared during playback). And that's with the Loader node in the output. Additionally, I'm trying to test your ProRes4444 suggestion above and now I can't even get back to having a clean transparent background to render. Ultimately, I'm sure that a lot of my issues are due to my still being a newbie, but when something works the first time, then doesn't work when you repeat it over and over again on fresh clips.... At this point I've wasted so much time trying to solve this it's stupid. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. At this point, I have to cut my losses and ditch Magic Mask, and that really stinks.

      @NealWiser there’s something fundamentally wrong with your set up, either hardware or software. I’d do a stress test on the mac to just to check you haven’t got a slightly defective gpu. I’d also do a project save as then open that and see if it fixes anything. Beyond this I’d have to be looking at the project myself and problem solve. It’s definitely not behaving correctly. I’ve never needed or used saver nodes. I’d personally drop them incase they are adding issues. For now turn of smart render as it doesn’t always update and might be showing old cache data. Only use smart render for final passes. Otherwise low res proxies if your timeline is lagging. If the project is valuable to you jump on to my website and scroll down to the bottom of the work with Tim page to contact me. I won’t be available til next week though: Www.timbelchamber.com

    Hi Tim - in this video at 5:40 - you say you will cover this in the editing section - I have looked for this video on your site, but not to be found ? Using computer generated frames ? My problem is that I have 50-fps property videos with some panning shots of big rooms - but when I drop it to 25-fps, then it comes out jittery (or with what seems the official term from the drone-guys - they call it judder !) - I looked for your e-mail address on this channel & your site - I hope this message reaches you ?

    • @TimBelchamber
      @TimBelchamber หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Andrew. The editing section is part of creative shortcut. Obviously I highly recommend joining and am happy to assist you with any creative problems there. This free TH-cam video will help you understand further: th-cam.com/video/CN9y8s-yNWM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oFkCgpobA6VrSrfr The most likely scenario is that your timeline is still 50fps, so you are having to regenerate frames to take your 25fps footage back up to 50fps. Make sure your timeline is 25fps. The other likely scenario is that you controlled your exposure with shutter speed, so didn’t stick to the 180 degree rule (2x your frame rate; 25fps = 1/50, 50fps = 1/100. This will make your footage choppy as you will lose motion blur. It’s why nd and polariser filters are so important. I have a super powerful video on filming coming to TH-cam soon that covers this. It’s also plausible that it’s a mix of both and just more noticeable at 25fps as frames are less frequent. I use a support ticket system for communication as emails just get ripped by data companies and spammed up on sites. Thanks for letting me know you found it difficult to communicate with me/find this. I’ll look to improve it.

I might revisit it as I have more ideas around masking, but as a mini tutorial: If you have a magic mask that is long and you want to manipulate it a lot, make a separate timeline for the clip, do the magic mask, and then drag this timeline on to your main timeline. Now when you use transform/effects on it, the tracking cache data doesn't need to be re rendered and you can actually see what you are doing!

      @@TimBelchamber My tech knowledge is pretty poor (god only knows why I am trying to use DVR), I edit off an external SSD. It definitely doesnt happen while I am using it, so you could be right. Thanks for coming back to me.

      @@voyageadventurevans no worries! It might also be if you’ve remounted the external to a different port with DaVinci still open, this would require a restart too.

    I wish there was a way to just animate opacity of something in fusion without having to merge it with a bg node and do the alpha. another thing that is convoluted AF. why cant they just add Opacity to stuff

      Fusion does take a minute to understand/could be easier. I do think you should be able to outline things without needing to understand nodes, but nodes also have their benefits. In terms of making it easier, DVR 19 has new features that involve making background replacement/blurring simple so it will be interesting to see that develop, but I’ve not played with it yet.

      @@TimBelchamber yes but what I'm saying is if you want something to fade off in Fusion, there is like 3 steps instead of just having an Opacity attribute that you can keyframe, you know?

    • @TimBelchamber
      @TimBelchamber 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unless I misunderstand, the blend slider on merge nodes does this. If that doesn’t help please could you give another example?

    • @PTFWWDB
      @PTFWWDB 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TimBelchamber yes you're right . I was mistaken, but my point is that you have to create a new merge node to do this for 1 object and it just complicates the node tree, making mistakes easier to make, I just wish node's had a key keyframe or opacity to skip this step

    • @TimBelchamber
      @TimBelchamber 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This would work for simple mode trees but wouldn’t work for multiple nodes as you would need to find a way of defining the order and controlling what fades in to what. I think it’s just a difficult thing to do/define and the current set up makes the most sense overall.

    I always give up on trackers in Fusion. it's always so convoluted and it's always red. After Effects is so much easier for all this stuff

    • @TimBelchamber
      @TimBelchamber 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d be interested to do a side by side with the same clips. I’ve found tracking to be as solid as when I used Adobe (2010-2020). In this situation, I don’t see how you can track something that disappears. I could have used different tracking methods or tools/nodes for this, but it was quick and all that was needed.

    when is BM going to fix all the bugs with Magic Mask, and everyone says person mode is garbage.. it feels like they abandoned this feature. I like your workaround I'm going to try it

      @TimBelchamber 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve actually not found any bugs with magic masks and it’s better Vs a year ago. It’s an incredibly complex task to achieve and certainly is a huge improvement from rotoscoping. That being said I’d love it to be more robust for when you change colour grade or adjust transforms on timeline.

    Great Intro. Showing the "result" of the tutorial. It was a fun and very useful "concept" to be replicated and adapted to many possibilities. As an "advanced beginner" I am able to follow along, and understand what you are doing, but maybe it could help yo to reach more people if you would slow down a bit, and , as you have done in other tutorials, include a "mouse highlighter" to make it easier to follow. Thank you for your great work.
