One of the earliest settlements in Donegal, Raphoe means Rath Bhoth 'enclosure of huts' possibly an early christian monastic settlement. It gave its name to the first church diocese that embraces most of Donegal. Its formal layout as a market town dates to the Plantation of Ulster. It is thought to be the smallest city in Europe possibly dating to a papal decree in 12th century
Beltany Stone Circle

A Bronze Age ritual monument linked to farming and calculating the Celtic seasons Imbolg, Bealtaine, Lughnasa, and Samhain. It may date even further back to the Neolithic period and is enclosing passage tombs. The landscape is dotted with standing stones and remnants of passage tombs dating back to 4000 BC. Beltany is the second largest stone circle in Ireland.
Raphoe Castle

A snapshot of a 17th century castle with a troubled history in Raphoe, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Constructed for the Church of Ireland Bishop John Leslie in 1637 as a fortified dwelling. In its 200 year occupation it was attacked many times by various militia opposed to the British monarchy and its presence in Ireland. It burned down in 1800s in an accidental fire.

One of the earliest Christian sites in County Donegal, Ireland. St. Eunan's Cathedral in Raphoe is believed to sit on the site of an Early Christian monastery founded by the monks of St. Colmcille and dedicated to Colmcille's biographer, Eunan who was 9th Abbot of Iona.
