If I Must Die / Art in Glass by Alison Kinnaird
Alison Kinnaird created this glass kite in response to Allan MacDonald's musical setting of Refaat Alareer's moving poem, If I Must Die. This video was created during her Art in Glass 2024 exhibition in her studio in Leith, and features the glass kite along with other war themed pieces. Thank you this was so helpful !❤
Thank You for sharing this, Karen. Even this little excerpt gives me goosebumps.
Yes, me too.
What a great tune! The phrasing is reminiscent of 18th century harp tunes. I'm sure your friend is honored to have it named after her.
Breagha
You play it so beautifully! Love the clarity and the defined tone. What a great addition to the harp family!
Thank you! I do have to admit I couldn't let this one go so it did indeed come home with me :)

Hi Karen. Do you have a video explaining a 3 finger roll on the same string? Thank you!!🙏
Thank you Karen!! This ornaments are what I was looking for 🙏
Great! Glad it helped.
Prachtig 😉🙏💞
Thanks 😊
wonderful and clear; thank you. I hope you will talk about the special damping needs of wire harps at some point.
Thanks! Yes I do talk about wire damping and have some wire arrangements in later videos. I also have a wire specific monthly Patreon group you might be interested in.
My favorite version of Auld Lang Syne! Thank for this exquisite rendition.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
This is all thrilling stuff - so many things to do besides playing the tune. Once you've learned the finger damping techniques, there's nothing you do by rote - it's a way of thinking, and you never come to the end of it. Very liberating. Thank you!
Yes! Exactly this! 😊
Thank you so much Karen for making these videos! Little by little I will learn hopefully!
You will! Happy that these videos are helpful, thanks for commenting!
Now, random question, do you play with your nails? On both hands? Wow! Are those metal strings?
I play with nails on both hands on wire strung harps. On gut harps it depends- my bass hand is pad not nail and my treble hand I can do either depending on what sound I want. The smaller harps are brass metal strings and the lowest one is silver!
These workshops are proving to be so valuable. I dont get much practice time, so I'm still practicing the information from the first lesson. 😄 Luckily with the videos being on TH-cam I can catch up as I can. Thank you!
That’s great! Yes the benefit of TH-cam is you can follow along anytime 😊
Karen, I love how clear and direct your teaching is. No wasted time. One knows how to go away and work independently on these skills. This session was excellent. Thanks.
That’s great to hear thank you! Sitting choosing tunes for next week here.
I would love to see more wire strung performances by you!
Thanks! There will be more wire strung soon!
Thank you, Karen. You play with nails, I see, while I don't.
You're welcome. I do have nails and often use them, but not always and as you can see in the video I am often using pads to demonstrate techniques. You don't need to use fingernails for these techniques, they work with fingerpads too so they are not just nail techniques! I hope you will try them out in your style of playing.
@@KarenMarshalsay yes, I surely will!
Thank you! Awesome information.
I never realized what a modern synthesizer sound the bray harp has. Its really cool. Great video!
It is isn’t it! Thanks :)
Such a beautiful harp! Can you tell something more who's the maker? And the tune is just heartbreaking. Beautifully played <3
Thank you! My harp was made by Jack Yule in Silverburn outside Edinburgh, but he lives in Colorado now. It’s the first of his Raven series of lighter string harps for traditional musicians, and I love it. The tune is a real favourite of mine too.
There is nothing that compares with a wire string harp playing a lament. Sad and beautiful at the same time.
Nice tune and you have a real feel for the instrument.
Thank you!
Most unexpected sound for this song and it sounds gorgeous!
I love the bray harp sound!
Lovely arrangement! Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks! You’re welcome, hope you enjoy it.
I like it. Where did you get your bray harp?
Thanks! It’s an Urquhart bray harp from Ardival Harps in Strathpeffer. I love it.
Ooh, I especially love that strathspey!
It’s a good one isn’t it!
Nice, thank you!
Lovely ornaments! Looking forward to more videos!
👏
Beautiful arrangement and playing ♡
Thanks!
it's very good to hear this, Karen. Is it informed by your wire playing? It's a lovely arrangement. Nice to see you playing too :-)
Thanks Richard! Yes the way I play on gut lever is very much informed by the way I play wire, and I'd say this is pretty typical of the way I play on lever. I think I will start doing some more videos over the summer.
I'll look forward to hearing :-) I hope Fbook will tell me when you do. All best wishes
Great demonstration! Very clear and concise!
