Shop Nation dust collection #3. The comments there, were so many. I have to explain/ experiment
I had so many questions and concerns in my last video I have to do another. So many people didn't understand what I was trying to do. All I want to do is give good info so others like me with a smaller budget can ues their hard earned money wisely. not every product is a home run some are just good ideas and that's where they should have stopped. Maybe making one and testing it for a year before releasing it to the public would have been the answer. Either way not enough testing and a fail in my book.

    Thanks for the review! I considered getting this product because the dust collection is notoriously bad with the factory set up. It looks like the Shop Nation dust scoop is not significantly better. I tried the extended flap solution offered by another TH-camr, I cannot recall his name, but DP were his initials I believe. The extended flap seemed like a reasonable solution but again, only marginal improvement. I love this Bosch saw, but the dust collection is horrible. I’m still looking for a good solution. My Dewalt 779 was much better with dust collection.

    It's a 3d printed part, in order to not have voids you need to increase the infill, which uses a magnitude more material and time to print. I also had a kick back not too long ago which broke a factory part in my DeWalt saw, even if the Shop Nation part was 100% infill it would still break with that type of impact. It's relatively inexpensive upgrade and supports a small business. Manage your expectations. It's this type of customer that keeps me doing woodworking as hobby vs trying to scale up.

    I'm surprised you don't have a separator( a must ) The hand full of dust you put directly into it was barely sucked up. I feel that your filter was severely plugged causing low suction. SN really does test them fully and every possible way. I have one and it has been fantastic. I'm using 5 HP rigid vac and a dust separator and it works great I'm very happy with it.

    That's an awfully long video to demonstrate that 3D printed parts are not as strong as injection molded parts - a fact that is obvious to anyone that knows even a little bit about 3D printing. I applaud the shop nation guy for coming up with a solution for miter saws universally having terrible dust collection. I would hope that anyone purchasing a part that is very clearly marketed as a 3D printed part would be going into it with the expectation that it may not last forever. Maybe if the saw manufacturers had any interest in making their products better, they could license the designs from shop nation and have them injection molded and included with the saw.

    I made the mistake of buying multiples of these. I'm on my 3rd one. The first one I hit a knot in some wood and my miter saw launched it into the chute completely shattering it. The second instance, I have no idea what happened and didn't notice it was broken until I noticed the that a lot of the saw dust wasn't being collected. I chalked it up to cheap manufacturing. Long story short, after this one shatters I won't be buying any more from ShopNation. Disappointed is all I can say. Thanks for making this video it absolutely needed to be made.

  • @MechE11B
    @MechE11B 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I bought three of these, two have broken. I made sure to clear the cutting area was very careful with it and they still broke. The problem is that the plastic isn't solid. It's a zig zag pattern like cardboard. Not at all durable. When I contacted SN about the first one that broke, I was more providing them an FYI on how it broke, because if you watch his channel he made an entire video on how he wasn't able to replicate the problem. Anyway, he didn't offer to replace it, instead provided a 50% off coupon. Figuring it was a fluke I gave the benefit of the doubt and bought two more. Well, I got halfway through my kitchen cabinet trim job and the 2nd one broke. For no apparent reason.... So I'm on my the 3rd and last one of these. Would NOT recommend. It's not that it might break, but when. Can't justify buying these over and over unless he changes the materials to something more durable. That said, it was a lot better at dust collection than the stock chute. So I'll give them that.

    I believe your failure to use the saw safely is the underlying issue. There are some things that could have been different with the printing, but honestly breaking the dust collection took the impact of your flying wood piece, where was your safety glasses, where is your hearing protection, why are you crossing your arms while cutting, and on and on and on. You only have yourself to blame. Be happy the plastic took the impact and not a hand, or arm, or eye. 🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕

      Rather than having this stance on a public platform, why not spend the time to make it a teachable moment. You know by deduction that this video is not about the failure of a dust collection device but the failure to use a tool safely. Again, the dust collection device is just a dust collection device, and nowhere on the maker's site does it state that it will survive a kickback event. If you had created an auxiliary zero clearance fence to mitigate kickback after the fact and showed others how to build it, accepted the blame that your measures caused this incident, and concluded that you should have been wearing the proper PPE when this occurred, folks like me wouldn't have to comment the obvious. @@meanmacawwoodshop

      Ive worked in a shop with a submicronresolution $160,000 super fancy 3d printer. And even THAT, 93% of the stuff that came off of it, we would mold and cast out of a more durable material. Im confident that with some experimentation with Smooth-On blends a proper firmness urethane could be found (possibly even modified with a glass microbead filler. Another thing we would do a lot casting parts for animatronics and costumes), a 2 piece silicon jacket with fiberglass backing mold can be made (with like 10 of em in one mold), write the smoothon kit number and required AB mix on the outside, and BAM! need to make some? Dont waste electricity, risk a spaghetti monster mishap, risk burning the house down if the printer goes nuclear in the night, AND avoid the potentially noxious fumes printing out the same damn part every order! The technology is best suited for rapid iteration of designs. At best they should be finished, smoothed, and casted most of the time. And at worst used in a lost plug casting. But it kills me, and drives me up the wall every time I see these wannabe makers who call themselves engineers because they can read a set of digital calipers wasting time, energy, and material doing things in literally the laziest, worst, slapdash way possible....while chasing unrealistic accuracy and resolution ideals.... Like, yeah, its cool there are anti resonance mitigations now giving us smoother prints and such....that doesn't mean you can print bolt threads youre not going to have to tap out anyways, and shouldn't trust in the first place! I love 3d printing, its awesome. I just cannot abide these wienies whos day falls apart at the mention of microwave fish or pineapple pizza flaunting their ego around like they know something when all they're doing is parroting someone else's blog post talking about someone else's blog post feigning intelligence in the field (and the sycophants mesmerized by their swinging bologna...) [Sigh] ....but yeah man....yeah..... Also, safety squints my guy. And be sure to manage your motion stresses on hoses and cords. That being said, there is no way a properly cast/molded part like that would have flexed far enough to catch the blade. Regardless of hose or cable tug. No way. Inferior part, plain and simple. Id ask for your money back.... Or at least a solid filled replacement with wider tolerances around the blade teeth....

      @zombieregime In the first video I did on the product, I explained that I did not like it for several reasons not related to the construction of the part. I was aware of the 3D printed parts and the possible effects or a kickback. I was not aware that I would have to completely change the way I use my saw. Thanks to me posting this video, I have learned a lot. One thing being dewalt has a recall for a similar defect. Also, there will be no room for a small channel like mine to thrive with a truthful factual opinion against largely followed channels. But that's fine. I'm not going anywhere and plan to keep putting out content on good and bad tools for the low-budget average weekend woodworker. The voids are there cause it's 3D printed. You can make it 100% infill, but it's not gonna add enough strength to deal with a kickback or touching the blade anyways.

      @@meanmacawwoodshop he could have printed it without voids if he wanted to, he chose not to to save on time and material. It's a setting in the printer software. It's called infill percentage. If it's 100% then there are no voids. I donno if 100% would have fared a lot better against a kickback or blade strike though. It might have broken less, but it would still be a broken part in need of replacement. So I donno if it was cheaply done or just made only as strong as it needed to be to withstand the kinds of forces the material could be expected to bear.

    You cut off a piece with no support behind it. You say you guarantee it would not have happened if it was ABS plastic. That statement is meaningless. You can guarantee no such thing. You basically created the equivalent of table saw kickback on the miter saw. Kickback can embed itself in a wall! ABS plastic is not going to stop it. What WILL stop it is preventing it from happening by not cutting an unsupported piece. Make a zero clearance fence to go over your stock fence for such cuts. There are videos on TH-cam showing how and why to do this. This incident is your fault. Don’t blame others for your mistakes.

    There are so many safety issues with your technique. #1 - You need to wear proper PPE #2 - Crossing your arms while making a cut is unnecessary. #3 - Using the hold-down clamp, you need to clamp your stock. #4 - You NEVER raise your blade while it's spinning after you have completed your cut. Your owner's manual clearly states points 3 & 4 (I own the same saw). I can't speak to the rigidity of the dust collection device as I don't own one, but it would not have failed if, at a minimum, points #3 & #4 were followed. You recorded yourself doing the wrong thing, plain and simple.

      @Unluckytoe 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They create user manuals for the consumer to follow and provide proper guidelines for safe usage. Again, with safety in mind, "Has taken a few of these" only solidifies my original points. Taking the time to properly secure your material (Regardless of the tool used) eliminates kickback. Secondly, you should consider wearing proper PPE, as you're fortunate that a piece of that PETG did not fly into your eyes. My one bothersome issue is watching woodworkers continually record themselves doing things incorrectly without regard for their safety. When something bad happens, they dare to refrain from self-reflecting. If a new woodworker watches videos like this, they too may think it's okay to perform their work similarly.@@meanmacawwoodshop
