They used to be "barely 17 and barely dressed", but they're not that age any longer when the song/story starts. The very first line is: "Oh, I remember every little thing, as if it happened only yesterday..". When they reach the final "act" of the story, starting with "so, now I'm praying for the end of time", we're back firmly in the present when the two are still together, but with their relationship dramatically changed/degraded. Which is, again, underlined by the very last lines of the song during the fade-out "it was long ago and now it's far away and it was so much better than it is today". The girl's repeated line there is "it never felt so good, it never felt so right, and we were glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife". Both of which clearly indicate sorrow and regret over how things aren't as exciting or satisfying as they used to be. When I was younger, I understood the song as a fun and playful warning against long term commitment at too young of an age and to the wrong partner. But that's just me.. :)

Been a big fan of Focus since this came out. I've seen it reported that this actually was a joke song, purportedly a parody of metal, which was just becoming popular. I believe the fact that it became so popular bugged the heck out of Jan Akkerman - who was always been understood to be a great guitarist but was more of a jazz guitarist.

Yes, it is a great performance. These are real artists. When you write a song as an artist, you want to tell a story. When dodo's from television tell you to cut your song in half because of television formats, a real artist would be hurt inside, because they apparently don't understand your story. Focus did it otherwise. Just play an already fast song twice the speed. And perfectly. I can't suppress the feeling this also was a f... you to the television company. And it came out brilliantly to the point of a standing ovation.
