Big River Crossing
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ก.ค. 2016
At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi. Big River Crossing is also the country’s longest active rail/bicycle/pedestrian bridge. It serves as the connection point of Main Street to Main Street, a 10-mile multi-modal corridor that also features the Delta Regional River Park and Big River Trail, creating ties to attractions between Memphis, TN and West Memphis, AR.

Big River Crossing / Harahan Bridge History
THANKS for sharing ! This history should never be forgotten or lost.
Two thumbs up
Whoa
Thank you! I was curious about what Big River Crossing used to be. I love to explore and know what things used to be or how it was built. Wish I could see how the Hernando De Soto Bridge was built. Also kind of curious if water was there or not.
I watched them build the Hernando Desoto Bridge from an office tower in downtown Memphis between 1971 and 1973. The superstructure was built with cranes mounted on barges. Much of the Steel was fabricated at the old Pigeon-Thomas facility located at Main and Crump Boulevard. The larger beams were shipped on barges from the Midwest. There certainly was water there the entire time. The Mississippi River main channel is almost a mile wide at Memphis and can cover almost ten miles when over "flood stage".
@@swinde did you see how the concrete strands or poles was put in with the water there?
No, but I think barges were used as well. Not sure how this is done, but I know that you can build forms and pour concrete in the forms and the concrete will set in the water. I am also sure they had to drive piers into the river bed that rested on the bedrock under the channel, just like they do for tall buildings.
Could someone please tell me the " Distance " walking from Memphis side to West Memphis side ? I am a Disable Vietnam Era Marine Corp Veteran. .... God's Doorkeeper
One mile each way.
If you walk just the bridge portion it is about a mile each way. If you walk from Martyr's Park to Bridgeport Road on the Arkansas Side it is about 5 miles total. I walk 5 miles every day and that is a walk I do on the Bridge at least once a week. Bring Water- there is no water fountain or other source of hydration along the path. Finally, you can make the trip as short as you need as the path is shared in both directions.
Thank You for Your Service, God Bless You!
There's a similar bridge in Louisville with lanes on both sides that closed to auto traffic in the late 70's when a dump truck partially fell through one of the lanes. It was too heavy and had no business being on it. I got to ride across it when I was a kid in my folks car. Wish they'd re-open it to pedestrian traffic if nothing else but Norfolk Southern doesn't want the liability. In the meantime we do have the old Big Four bridge as a pedestrian bridge.
Louisville would have done that except that Norfolk Southern said no, lol.
Incredible!!!
This is so great! Where can I get detail maps? I'm ready to plan a trip to Marianna, but I'm having trouble getting the details.
Visit bigrivertrail.com for more information.
Is it open? Is there signage to get to Marianna? Are detailed maps available?
Get your bikes out and ride over the Mississippi! Hopefully, those of us who walk dogs will be permitted on Big River Crossing.
+Rehim Babaoglu I have seen dogs, skateboards, and razor scooters. Have yet to see a busker or a tamale cart.
Oh, they're coming. Nothing stops free enterprise.
I’ve walked across it a few times
Excellent. Another fun ride in Memphis.
Beautifully done.
Thank you.
