    Hey Dean, new to your channel and noticed this unique format that even I understood the rulebook...now. It's about time someone stood up to the poorly written rulebooks which can be interpreted a thousand ways. Hope to see a top 10 best/worst written rulebooks of 2024 😄

    Is this intended to be humourous? Have you played the game? The rulebook is great when you are learning to play the game. My first 2 player game took about 2.5 hours to learning from the rule book. I forgot about a rule, where you put one glory on the market, we took it into our supply, but that was due to the being a lot to think about on your turn. The reference section is amazing. Also the Burn is mentioned in the game Structure on page 8.

    • @BoardGameTextbook
      @BoardGameTextbook หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andypelton2642 To clarify, are you saying that you spent 2.5 hours reading the rulebook before you could figure out the rules? Or are you saying that the teach PLUS the first game took 2.5 hours?

    • @andypelton2642
      @andypelton2642 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The latter. The first game took 2.5h as we learnt from the rulebook. I had skimmed the first few pages of rules in advance, I've played a number of deck builders before, so the general mechanisms are familiar. I found the rule book really clear, we looked up concepts like beaming and scan as we needed them.

    • @BoardGameTextbook
      @BoardGameTextbook หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andypelton2642 I mean, yeah, it would've been nice if beaming and scanning were things that you looked up as you played instead of being mentioned as integral parts of the rules, leaving me to wonder just how much I needed to know about these things. It also would've been nice if I was told what an Incident deck was on page 8 instead of trying to hold that rule in my head until we figured out what an incident card is for. And I've also played deckbuilding games before, but it would've been nice if "gain" was not an inherently different word from "take," or if the rulebook had explained that an "operation" is an ability on a card before saying the word "operation" a dozen times. But if it took you 2.5 hours to learn and play a deckbuilding game with a fairly simple concept of gaining resources and cards, and the multiple new terms for basic functions and the lack of any overview didn't bother you, then I hope you enjoyed it. For the sake of anyone who hasn't played multiple deckbuilding games before, I hope that they have a similar experience.

      @@BoardGameTextbook Page 3 tells you there are 6 incident cards, page 4 tell you where to put the incident deck. This isn't a short game, 2.5 hours is an average length for this game. I've played five 2 player games so far and they have all clocked in at around 2 hours. There is an awful lot to take in each turn, your hand could give you a number of options and depending on what the opponent has done, could change your plans, such as attacks, ships and away teams in the neutral zone and cards in the market. It is also a very good game, the theme oozes through, very different decks and plently of strategies to try out and also the potential for lots and lots of decks from the wealth of captains in the star trek universe.

    • @BoardGameTextbook
      @BoardGameTextbook หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andypelton2642 > "Page 3 tells you there are 6 incident cards, page 4 tell you where to put the incident deck." It's not a good idea to make people learn rules while they're setting up the board. If I'm looking at a table with 17 different things that I've just put on the table, then I'm not going to remember any of that. I'm concentrating on where things go, not what they do. When the rules say that emptying the incident deck ends the game, it could have added one extra sentence of context. "Players gain incident cards as a cost to play some operations or as a penalty when attacked by the opponent." Okay, so the game can end when too much bad stuff happens to one player, got it. Please put the context of rules beside the rules themselves and don't make me hunt for the context of everything. > "It is also a very good game, the theme oozes through, very different decks and plently of strategies to try out..." I apologize if you thought I was attacking the game itself. Like, during my first read, I thought the beaming mechanic was interesting, the concept of getting some cards out of your deck while still scoring their points and balancing which cards to keep in the deck. And I'm interested in how the development cards give you options to optimize for different strategies while still having cards that are unique to your own faction. I made a how-to-play video for Captain's Chair. I'd like to play it (though it's still on preorder in north America). It would not be the first good game with a bad rulebook.

    Hey, I know this is a first video, so I don't want to discourage you, but I had a few thoughts looking at this. First of all, I am absolutely in love with the idea of criticising rule books. As a designer I would love to figure out how to be better at writing them, as a player I want them to make my experience of learning a game smoother. I also fully agree that the industry as a whole, and historical games in particular, are NOT GOOD at writing rulebooks. That being said, there is some irony in making a one hour long unstructured video to complain about rulebook's structure. I sincerely believe that if you want your message to be more impactful you would benefit from making videos that are structured and making a clear point. Looking forward to watch more.

      I appreciate that you stopped by to say hello. I also appreciate that basically no one will watch the ERIA series. If I edit this down into short, to-the-point criticisms of each rulebook, then that adds editing time to videos that people won't watch anyway. There's not a big audience for complaints about specific issues with specific rulebooks. I'm going to spend more time editing the How to Play video that follows each ERIA video, because I think that's what people actually want to see. If I can devote enough time to this channel, then I'm going to keep recording ERIA videos with each new rulebook that I read, so I have a record of my own thoughts and I get some practice with recording in OBS. But I have no delusions that this series will be popular at all~
