Interview With A 1940s Gold Miner
Take a look back in time with 94 year old Ken Gillanders, who kindly visited for an interview regarding the time he spent working as miner and braceman at Chewton's famous Wattle Gully Mine.
Ken worked at Wattle Gully in the late forties and early fifties. In this interview he shares insights into what the mine was like at the time, what it was like working underground, some of the men he worked with, and some very interesting things that happened during his time there.
Ken was the youngest worker underground at the time; all the others were much older. Because of this, Ken is one of the very few who are still able to share first-hand accounts of that era at Wattle Gully.
Thanks very much to Ken for this interview, these stories will be appreciated by a lot of people. Also thanks to Ken's family, to Alan Miller, and to the Maldon Vintage Machinery and Museum.
And a huge thank you to Clive Willman for the filming and camera/light set up - very much appreciated.

Today we're going to take a look at historical gold mining methods using archival footage from the late 1930s. This brilliant educational film gives us a glimpse into the operations at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota over eighty years ago, showing us their methods of reaching, extracting, raising, and processing the ore. Horse Powered Whims - Gold Mining Technologies

Today we're going to take an up close look at the horse powered whim, a crucial machine in the development of Victoria's goldfields. One of the many important operations in underground mining is the raising of ore, mullock, and water from underground. Back in Victoria's gold rush, one of the first machines employed for this work was the windlass. But this device was man-powered, and its capabil...

Today we're going to take a look back in time at the Stawell Goldfield, where in 1874, a series of four photos were taken from Big Hill. In recent times these photos were restored and combined into this incredible panoramic view by talented Stawell photographer, Karl Meyer. Now, there are lots of very interesting features shown in this image of Stawell, and what is of particular interest to me ...
Gold At Pleasant Creek - The Incredible Stawell Goldfield

The discovery of gold in Victoria was officially announced in July, 1851, and with great excitement the colony's rich goldfields were opened up one by one. While all this madness was going on, an old hand named William McLachlan was employed as a shepherd's hut keeper all the way out on the Concongella pastoral run, about 80 miles beyond Ballarat and far beyond the scope of any known goldfield....

25 shillings... like literally real money... SILVER! pre 1946? was stirling i think?, post 1946 50% silver... today a 50% silver shilling is 5.7grams = 2.8grams of silver = approx $4 AUD.... a three pence is 1.4g, = .7g of silver = $1 AUD.... smaller than a fake silver coin, aka a 5C piece... 5C "piece"? piece of what? worthless shit is the answer... six pence is 2x three pence, = 2.8g or 1.4 of silver = $2 shilling is 2x sixpence and florins are 2x shillings.. what a great video! junk silver is the cheapest fractional silver you can get... i got a few kilos of old 50%.... PIECES! ... of precious metal...

in addition in 1966 we converted to dollars and a shilling was equal to 10C... "wikipedia" .... today is worth $4. sooo 1966 to 2024 is... 58 yrs and its increased 40X or. 4000% sooo 4000% divided by 58 yrs is... 68% per year in appreciation since the inception of the dollar. or the dollar has fallen in value on average 68% a year in contrast to the silver.? i think. this could be wrong, happily stand corrected?

There's ore specimens here on my desk that my granddad held onto from his 19th century claims. Sometimes it seems sort of crazy it can already be a quarter way into the 21st century already.

a lot of the metal and alloys were stripped by kids in the mine for the ww1 effort also the labourer that fell (in the 80s or 90s) to his death is an interesting story, they got him out a year later i think costing either 1 or 5 mill if they didnt recover him they wouldve had to have sealed the mine the mine was still mining a couple of years ago the last time l did a tour i imagine it is today @ 4k per oz also the chinese gardens, cemetary and cricket field is worth a read chinese sent bars of soap back to china with gold hidden inside (its said) tobacco was shared with the horses to chew on i believe theres a movie getting filmed there soon
