James R Barker Arriving At Duluth, Minnesota 4K November 9, 2024
All ships have horns, but only the James R Barker has anything like this one. Your entire body vibrates when it fires off, this time with a full Master's Salute. I paid particular attention to capturing the sound without distortion, and I believe I did. If you fall asleep while watching, don't worry - you'll wake up! Recorded in 4K video.

Today we have a drone's-eye view of the longest ship ever to sail the Great Lakes. Also known as "The Queen of the Lakes", the Paul R Tregurtha is indeed the longest at 1013.5 feet (308.9 meters). However, there are 12 other ships of 1000 feet or longer, so it doesn't hold the title by much. Here we have a mostly drone video featuring Beaver Falls, Minnesota. Also, you'll see Beaver Bay from a bit offshore over Lake Superior. Bonus features include, shall we say, a bit too close of a view of some boulders and a tree. Note that the sky appears hazy due to smoke blowing in from forest fires in Quebec, which were over 600 miles to the east at the time.

The 767 foot long Arthur M Anderson is a classic Great Lakes freighter, known for being the last ship to be in contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald before it went down during a storm on November 10, 1975. It was also the first ship on the scene afterwards, and early in the morning of November 11, they spotted floating debris from the Fitzgerald thereby confirming its fate.

This shows the waterfalls at Beaver Falls and Gooseberry Falls State Park between Duluth and Beaver Bay, Minnesota. The videos were taken on two different dates, four months apart (5/13/21 and 9/13/21). During the period in between, northern Minnesota experienced a serious drought, and the effect on the waterfalls will be clearly noted.

First trip to Great Lakes Aquarium 5/10/2021. Masks were required at the time, so I'm a bit muffled.
Captain newland never disappoints fans boat watcher in and everybody now’s the barker bark is by far the best master salute on the Great Lakes
Whoever thought putting two horns a perfect fifth apart in pitch on the ship is a genius. Musically it's one of the prettiest ships I've ever heard. It becomes even more apparent when you hear the bridge horn playing a sour "tritone" right after.

Great video work. Is that hull damage at the front of the ship or just scraping?
These large ships often get scraped up when going through the Soo Locks. The width of the lock is 110 ft while the Paul R Tregurtha is 105 ft wide. There's a 21 foot drop in water level between Lake Superior and the others, so you see large "scratches" on the sides as the ship moves up or down when passing into or out of Lake Superior.

Wonderful video of the Big Paul. This was the first thousand-foot laker I ever saw, and it was completely unplanned. My son and I were eating lunch in the Soo, and it just happened to go through the locks right in front of us.
