LIRR Trains and the Blizzard of 1978 Syosset NY.
Just some bad 8mm silent film I took back in the day. I wish at the time I took these films a little closer to the tracks. I took most of the train films from the window of my upstairs bedroom. Trains going to the left are westbound heading into the Syosset station. Trains going to the right are eastbound approaching Syosset-Woodbury Rd. Snow is from the Blizzard of 1978. Took the town about 3-4 days before they cleared our street with that heavy equipment. No school Monday - Thursday.. I extended it to Friday.

I found this clip recently and put it up today, a year after I recorded it. I recorded the eastbound trip but forgot about the westbound. It was a warm 45 degree day and foggy about 4:50 pm. Even the horn sounds eerie at 00:14 and then, the train just disappeared at the end. Here's the link to the eastbound trip that day. th-cam.com/video/kqZuPHR8gfo/w-d-xo.html

Awesome! Love the last clip of the freight! Saw a SOO LINE go by! :)
Super cool!
Thank you so much for posting and sharing these videos! This brings me back to my childhood as I lived in Carle Place and played at the park where the trains would go through all the time. My childhood home was the 4 house from the tracks those old locomotives would rattle the window when loaded! So cool!
Happy you enjoyed it.
@mrjv61 definitely warm and fuzzy feelings lol Merry Christmas!
That grey-haired "car knocker" (we call 'em "conductors" now) is a "gas"...no yellow "high-vis" vest, no radio, no "3-step"! How things have changed in 38 years. Classic (nowadays "Fallen Flag") boxcars everywhere...L&N, Family Lines, N&W, Frisco, UP, SP, Cotton Belt...Wow!!
Does anyone remember the small rail yard by Mitchell field. Just south of stewart ave, and quentin Roosevelt blvd.Where the circus train used to park
Why there’s Lirr Long Island coach
80s looked like a fun decade espically for the railroads
Classic LIRR
I especially enjoyed the part with the train in it! You dig?
Do you know if they ever ran on the Oyster Bay line ?? typical LIRR wasting a great resource only to have to use a jury-rigged set up GP 38 and power car
I've seen 151 just last week. It is now owned by NY&A Freight service and was at the Lumber yard in Yaphank.
20:16 Hoo boy, that car tire screech! 😂
Man does your wife know you recorded over that stuff? Haha
If I'm Correct Out Of All The 38s 261 & Maybe 271 Are The Only Ones Still Here
261,268,270&271 With nya.
Metra E8 #521
LIRR Chould of kept them and upgraded them.
That lumber yard is still there but not sure if it is still Georgia Pacific. It is still a lumber yard and still have rail freight service but now is done by New York & Atlantic railroad. Motive power is no longer the C-420's but now performed by ex-LIRR GP38-2's and MP15's.
This 3100 last train is similar to a brakevan or a caboose
Nothing like the sound of that GP38's get up and go as it pulls out of Patchogue Station.
3:37 I love the footage. My father worked the Ronkonkoma yard back in the 70s and 80s. He worked the midnight shift and that gray building in the back was the LIRR employee shop. He used to take me to work with him back then when I was a little kid and always remember when he took me to the Jaws plow and into a GP-38. Great memories watching this and how much I miss my dad. Thanks!
LIRR needs to do cement ties to Greenport . Also add more tracks for laying up more trains by raising speed on that branch with 136 pd rail
LIRR needs to order more diesel coaches , single level with P42 locomotives
Right before the electrification of the Ronkonkoma line, wasn’t around that time 😢
Remember living on the island riding behind the C420s and RS 3s every day to Jamaica Queens to change trains for a MU electric to Penn Station NY and back again at night
For a second I thought I was looking at the long hood of one of the GP38's before I realized was a high nose C-420.
I know this is an old video but i belive Pine Aire is where RS70 originates and terminates so those are probrobly RS70 power
It’s heading to kings park
Sadly, both of those E units were scrapped a couple of years ago.
The year where they restricted half of the diesel fleet’s horn
Shiny new third rail
Excellent video!!!!!!!!!
Thanks You
February, 1987 was the strike...and of course it snowed several times to make matters worse.
Before the C3's these LIRR diesels looked like they were running on a 3rd world railroad.
Excellent!!!!!!!! So great to see!
Thanks🚂
What an amazing video! Shame to see how much we’ve lost over the years. I cannot wait to look back at the pictures and photos I’ve taken in 20-30 years.
Great videos as always. Thanks for sharing!
What a treat. Great to see the Slater's area activity, as well as Riverhead Bldg down by Ostrader Ave. Thanks for the uploads, as always.
Remember the bar car
god i miss hearing those horns i swear the LIRR had the best sounding horns
Hey, what type of horn did the FA-1's have?
Are those switcher locomotives?
Yes, MP-15-AC
@@mrjv61 that's so strange. Aren't they too slow?
The scars of trackage still exist in Setauket, but the switch was since long removed. Of course in 1990 east of Post 2, it was still 251 Territory until late 1992.
i wonder what the abandoned spur just west of Smithtown was for and what St James looked like in the early 90s and even when they had more of a yard there. i was born in 02 so I've missed quite a bit. lol.
@@evangouldtransit would have been the spur for 84 Lumber then in Smithtown which connected the western end of Post 1, and not off the Main Track
@@NEFeldman ahhhh okayy that makes sense.
When you are knee-high to a grasshopper and you’re standing on a ground level platform, you can’t help but be in awe!😃😲👍
Cool to see the cab car facing the eastend in those early days
I remember seeing these as a kid growing up in Bellport in the 90s, time sure flys
I remember there was a Smithtown turn in the 80’s with equipment laying over during part of the evening rush but I never saw three trains at Smithtown.
I see that LIRR #102 and #104 are in your profile picture! They are in Morris park just sitting there. I think #102 and #104 should be moved to the Riverhead RR station museum so that they can be seen by everyone and not just sit in a railyard. Also your vids are great!
H___E___L___L___O I enjoyed the video Thumbs Up! 👍Kind regards
Great footage! I've never seen two trains that close to each other at Smithtown before. Only thing I've seen like that was at Ronko when an electric was right behind a Greenport scoot.
I think it's the new PTC. They couldn't do this with the old speed control.
Great catch of the Ex-Dual Mode engine.
I just seen that engine on a eastbound Greenport train
