Exploring Modality: The Lark Ascending

Recently I analysed Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending". Grappling with modality and parallel harmony, the opening solo and accompaniment part where the two come together for the first time always fascinated me. This is awesome. I feel like every Herrmann video I see is about Vertigo or Psycho. While I think those two are some of his best scores, there’s not much to say about them that hasn’t already been said. You picked a great deep cut to look at and it’s all VERY Herrmann.
2:54 to 2:59 gets me every time.
Muito bom. Obrigado.
thank you very much❤
No worries. I am just pleased that it is still proving useful!
Thank you. Very useful. 👍
@@roberthenry9641 thanks for the comment! I am glad this video is still proving useful. Since creating this, a couple of books I have found useful, particularly in teaching are Alfred Blatter’s Instrumentation and Orchestration (particularly when he gets to orchestration) and Rockstro’s “The Rules of Counterpoint: Systematically arranged for the use of young students”. Both of which are available through archive.org.
Thank you for this, i am trying to arrange this for a rock band and the functional harmony really helps to extrapolate choices for bass, do you possible have a sheet with all of the roman numerals and the chords above the staves?
@@emunilsson5002 sorry for the delay in response. I was away on holiday. Thanks for the comment. I may have an annotated score somewhere, I will try and have a look through my computer later. Thank you for helping me to unravel some of the sturcture of Avro Pärt's compositions. The amazing thing is, even after knowing a bit more about how the music is structured, it is no less compelling. I need to try writing out some skketches just to get a feel for how it might work. GThanks again. Just came across your channel.
No worries, glad you took something from the video. I lie very much in the camp of music being made more beautiful through analysis. It's not for everyone. That said, I agree that this is particularly true of Pärt's music. In a strange way, for me, the simplicity of its technique and procedure often makes the music more complex. You know the technique and that there is really not a great deal to it, yet he's able to make such deep, seemingly meaningful/resonant music with it. If you're interested or it is of further help I have a free preview of my tintinnabuli course available at the moment. The whole first chapter is free and breaks down what's taught in this video even more. Link: anyoldmusic.thinkific.com/courses/Rule-Based-Music-Composition-Tintinnabuli

Thanks for sharing! Appreciate your detailed analysis.. very interesting and learning a lot! 😊❤
I am hoping to release the full analysis of this in a structured article (and possibly video) soon.
Yee ~
Yes,
The music is very reminiscent of his soundtrack for Marnie.
Beyond listening and viewing, I am not too familiar with the Marnie soundtrack. That said, I suspect you are correct and would find relationships. Especially given Herrmann, like any professional, develops his craft and redeploys it on each score, while also trying to refine and grow it.
B section is E minor as much as my little musical knowledge tells me.
It's G-major. Certainly at its beginning.
Haha I space out when I get ideas from composition books too
It's a curse... I think. Maybe.
Pourquoi les sous-titres automatiques ne sont pas disponibles sur cette vidéo ?
Not sure. I'll look into it. Maybe it couldn't understand me. I have that effect on things.
Thanks again! Today is the Explore Herrmman day and compose using his devices so you are a revelation!
Glad to be of service.
You have a detailed and analytical description yet it is still very useful and meaningful! I’m very glad I came onto this today. I’m a composer and this morning I decided to compose a piece using his interesting timbre-synthesis , those classic sounds he gets from mini-arrangements of Flute & Clairinet (wonderful!) Harp & Vibraphone (mystic and mysterious) Oboe, Bassoon and French horn, also Cor Anglais Clairinet and Trumpet (no idea yet- interesting). I had my DAW set up with these but watching this I’m adding to it. I’ve made a Herrmman Template of just these groups and also a full symphonic template using BBCSO pro and MSS for the Symponic base and these added. I have a feeling by the time I finish your videos I’ll be glad I have 64GB ram!! If I manage to make something which isn’t embarrassing, with your approval I would happily link my Ode to Bernard here and offer you full use of the song as a thank you for your great work!
Thank you!
You are one of the most underrated classical music channels!
Very interesting! - David
It was quite helpful to hear those pedal tone samples! I couldn't help but hear the D pedal tone as if it were a 7th in the bass of an Em7 tonality, so I am still hearing a dorian tonality.
Fabulous! I love your fun narrations! 🇫🇷 🏴
Cheer. I hope to do more shorts in the future!
Really useful video on analysis annotation, very clear and easy to read. I usually use pencil and paper but this eventually ends up as a mess of notes and rubbings out. Thanks Brian
Cheers for the comment, Brian. I sometimes use pencil too. It depends. This is probably the first time I have done it this way, as I was trying to present it via Zoom/video. However, the same principles and approach applies for me, no matter the tools. I always try to get a picture of the piece overall, before trying to then look at smaller details.
Sorry about the random bird noises. If I didn't have the window open, I'd cook!

One observation I forgot to make is of the final chord voicing with the woodwind quartet. The oboe sticks out like a sore thumb to me. In a lower-thicker register, against the Clarinet and then the Flute, in their mid-low registers, it sounds like an overfilled sandwich on the 3rd of the chord. What does everyone else think?
