Love the video and the clear explanations. One question. Do you get the same restrictions if you use one of the new batteries and one of the older batteries in the grip?
@@user-ll2jl1yg3t that’s an excellent question. I’m not sure what happens if you mix batteries in the grip I’ll have to test that and see, but I would imagine as long as you have one of the new batteries in the grip all should work fine more to come.

R3 is good enough
@@ronnytky whatever works best for you is the right camera 📷
What i've seen and used to is that the R3 is not as sticky to AF and does loose AF when people turn its face away from the R3. The "1" cameras where always about "how to get THE shot right now, in situations where you cant control anything".
@ exactly, I could not agree ☑️ more.
WRONG it's NOT the first mirrorless camera with cross type focus sensor. The Olympus OM1 did it first years ago.
@@Makta972 THANK YOU. If that is true, I was unaware that Olympus mirrorless cameras used cross-type focus. I will look further into this information. Canon was the first full-frame mirrorless camera to use a cross-type focus point.
Great video shows what the canon r1 can do. Did you need to use the HF anti-flicker shooting settings in side the building?Thank you, looking forward to your next video on the canon r1.
@@mitchconn7712 Yes, I did have antiflicker active for the indoor events. Most venues use LED lights, which flicker. Antiflicker assists with the shutter speed syncing with the oscillation of the LED lights to capture them at their brightest lamination.

Noise, and file quality... My old 1DX has the best of all the cameras I own, besting 5DSRs and 5DIVs, so 12 years later I have no doubt the R1 files are amazing.
@@joaquintrigueros That makes sense. Remember, the larger the file size, the more noise at “high” ISO. This is why the R1 has embraced the 24-megapixel file size.
The AF is bonkers good, noticably better for the initial lock than the R3. It also does a much better job ignoring things that you want it to. I'll need a month or so to understand it all. Being 100% confident in the ES is nice too.

I tested the r3 vs the R5 II and was not impressed with the R5 II.
@@contentm3893 That depends on your goal for the test. The right camera for the right job. Both are excellent choices, but only one is right for you.
Why were u not impressed with the R5 II?
@@richschmitt100 Canon lowered the data rates for the lower end 4K video to 250 Mbps and the 4k 120p video down to 350 Mbps compared to the R3 at 1080 Mbps at 4K 120p. The video is also linked skipped, so it was a combination of a few items that Canon seemed to compromise on. The R3 also has a slightly faster sensor readout. I honestly also felt like the R3 was more responsive for photography. Compared to the R5 the R5 II is a massive upgrade.
I have mates with the R3, and they cannot take the shots I have been taking with the precapture function on my R5mkii. The R5mkii focus is better than the R3. I guess if I wanted to shoot video seriously, I would buy a serious video camera, but the 8k60 looks fine to me.
@@nordic5490 The R5 II AF is not better than the R3. They tried to bring the R5 II up to the level of the R3 but it didn't surpass the R3. If it did it would be on the level of the R1 and it is not. The R5 II has a lower sensor response than the R3 and that's on measured results by Canon. Think about it. The R3 has a faster processor, faster sensor and line skipped video which sacrifices detail and lower data rate for all video except 4K fine and raw. You are trying ro connect pre capture with AF and they are not the same. Pre-capture just means you start shooting a little sooner which you can do with any camera. Again, you are confusing the marketing hype with reality. Everything you claim about the R5 II would make it just as good as the R1. The R1 is how much better than the R3? 10%, so you claim the R5 II has passed the R3 by 5% which means you are saying the R5 II is as good as the R1. The hardware and physics of the R5 II makes it impossible to be as good as the R1. The r3 was the flagship camera before the R1 and the R5 II is not a flag ship camera in 2024. As you use the R5 II to shoot birds you will see what it can do and can't do.
Phenomenal pictures coming out the R1 but I have to say that the 400mm 2.8 and 600mm f4 are also Phenomenal lenses so what a nice 20 thousand dollar camera + lens setup!

A question about R5 II memory card setup if you please. I have my camera setup to write to both cards simultaneously, but one is a 512 GB CF-Express, and the other is a 256 GB UHS-II SD card. When the SD card fills up I assume I will get a message that I cannot shoot with copies to both cards. Will I be able to simply replace the SD card and continue shooting or must I replace both cards. I was unaware of how expensive 512GB SD cards were when I bought the CF-Express card, which was on sale:)
@@richardfichera2971 You are correct. The camera will stop 🚫 and say memory card full. Replace the card and continue shooting.
@@bobanddawndavis Thank you, appreciate the confirmation. This is the answer I expected - common sense says that is how the camera should behave, but an almost 50-year career in computer systems hardware, software and architecture makes me cautious about assuming the intersection of software design and common sense:) Unfortunately the yields on 512 GB SD cards are lower than the 256 GB versions, so the price is more than 2X the 256 card:(

So much info thank you! Was having issue with new set of el-5 flashes. Spitting knowledge here !
@@mrbob581 Thank you so much; I appreciate your comments. More to come, flash both on & off camera and Pre-continuos capture details
I do like your idea of having an assignable button to enable Pre-Continuous Shooting. However, that requires the shutter to be set the Electronic. Not sure if possible, but would be neat if assignable buttons could perform a "macro" operation (i.e. two or more functions). e.g. first set Shutter to Electronic, then enable Pre-cont shooting. What I plan to do is to either set up two custom modes (one for studio work where I'll always be using Mechanical shutter; and another for misc work where I'd most likely be using Electronic). Or perhaps place the Shutter mode setting right next to the Pre-cont. shooting in My Menu.
Using the Custom Modes to customize settings for various shooting scenarios is a good idea.
Fantastic Video Bob. I recently upgraded from my Canon EOS 5D MK II to the Sony A7R III however I found this video quite helpful. I started out with the Canon Rebel T1i many years ago and will probably be considering upgrading to a Canon Mirrorless at some time. Thanks for sharing.
The problem with activating "Silent Shutter on" on R5M2, is that on R5M2 it exposes your shutter that now does not close when you change lenses. It stays open, even if you turn off your camera. This is in Canon R5M2 advanced manual so it is not a bug but how Canon decided to operate R5M2. So if you like to have your shutter closed when you change lenses, you should not use this function. Instead, I would suggest to go to menu and do "Beeping sounds off". That way, the camera operates silently, but your shutter still protects your sensor at the shut off when you change lenses.
@@DmitryBrodsky007 A silent shutter does not expose the image sensor if it is closed when the camera is powered off. I have never had an issue with the image sensor being exposed on R5, R5MII, R3, and R8. The camera has many features, functions, and options to customize it to meet your needs.
@DmitryBrodsky007 check out "Shutter at Shutdown" (page 1,014 of the Advanced User Guide). Though see the note regarding Auto Power Off.
After further testing and experimenting with electronic, silent shutter, and pre-capture continuos, I stand corrected! You are correct, sir! Suppose you leave the camera with an electronic silent shutter or pre-capture continuously and power off the camera. In that case, the mechanical shutter does not close, exposing the image sensor. Out of habit, I always return the camera to the Mechanical or electronic first curtain shutter when I shut it down. I didn't realize this was a good practice for protecting the image sensor. It would be a great custom function to ALWAYS close the mechanical shutter when powering down the camera.
Shutter at Shutdown (see page 1014 in the User Guide) may be of help here. Though see the note on that page regarding auto power off.
@@bobanddawndavis as i stated above my solution was when i found in the menu obscure setting “beeping sounds off”. Just turn it on and it effectively makes the camera silent even if you leave the camera in electronic shutter mode.
Good timing, Bob! Mine arrives tomorrow (from B&H). Really appreciate your detailed information. So much to do now this coming weekend!

@@howardholtzman1331 I have posted a deep-dive review of the @canonusa #eosr5markII where I shared my experience using Profoto flashes. Check out our home page.
@@howardholtzman1331 Hi Howard, I can say that @Profoto performed the best for third-party flashes if TTL is important. As a wedding and event photographer, I depend on TTL (through-the-lens) flash exposure metering. I always use TTL for the on-camera flash and manual for off-camera. My philosophy is that if I am moving and the subject is moving, I use TTL for on-camera. I also use a technique I developed, “The Triangle of Light.” I use it all the time. Three off-camera flashes in three different groups plus on-camera. Usually, the three off-camera are manual and various power levels as needed. @Westcott and others work okay in manual, but not in TTL.
Good stuff, thanks. Can you offer any advice on the lens IS switch settings on the 100-500mm lens for bird photography? I just purchased an R5 Mark II, (arriving in a couple of days!) and the 100-500mm lens, and I am confused as to which IS setting to use. Most birds I shoot are still or slowly moving, with occasional birds in flight when I get lucky, and I know I will not be able to switch modes on the lens. I am not concerned about whether the IS is active when I am just looking through the camera as long as it stabilizes correctly when I take the picture. Having it stabilize when I press the shutter half-way as I am used to on my current camera (an OM1) would be a plus. Thank you.
