Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro, Aug 2023
มุมมอง 1394 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro is not on the tourist map. Because it is a site of pilgrimage. Two things fascinated me about this place. The Church and monastery are built on cliffside, in a cave with sheer drop off. Hard to even stand a ladder here let alone build a structure like this hundreds of years ago. Second. The pilgrims were real dedicated ones. Walking bare feet from the bottom of th...
Quest for Everest: Vol 7; Hide and Seek game

We got to see Mount Everest all right but due to weather changes it was a hide and seek game. All that is seen in this presentation. What I omitted from this video was the bathroom situation. You should thank me for sparing you the visuals. But if you want to know more, then read on. You have been warned! The bathroom is only a minute walk away from the tents, more like a trailer home with 6 se...
Quest for Everest: Vol 6; Everest evades us

After all that partying in Lhasa, now our minds were all set on Mount Everest. Our oxygen levels were holding good. We did not feel fatigued and were all pumped and ready to see Mount Everest. This time we took a different highway, a quiet one, so that we could see Yamdrok Lake and the glacier that feeds it. As we got closer to Mount Everest, it got colder and the cloud cover became more intens...
Quest for Everest, Vol 5 The Lhasa Experience

Two consecutive nights in Lhasa allowed us to recover from daily riding and for the crew to wash motorcycles and tune them up. We also got to go out and party which was long overdue. This would be the first part of presentation today. The second part is the mystic Potala Palace from 700 AD but ramped up to present condition by the Fifth Dalai Lama. It was the winter palace for Dalai Lamas until...

Quest for Everest, Vol 3; Ride to New Tingri

There is just so much we saw during the day, everyday, that I really had to split the volumes. Today we go from Kyirong to New Tingri, that is volume 3. New Tingri is how you access EBC or Everest Base Camp in Tibet. Since we are early in the process of acclimatization, we were all hypoxic in New Tingri. This is the first time I saw oxygen spigot in hotel rooms just like they have it at hospita...
Quest for Everest, Vol 2; Crossing into China

Crossing on foot from Nepal into China was unique experience. I thought it deserved a story in its own right. Not many places in the world where you cross the border on foot. This border is also unique because of the time zone change. From Nepal into China, you lose 2 hours and 15 minutes. Not very many places where you have such big a change in time zone, on foot. Unless you were standing on N...
Quest for Everest Vol 1; Riding to Tibet Border
มุมมอง 4127 หลายเดือนก่อน
I finally got to see Mount Everest on May 24, 2024. From Everest Base Camp, EBC, on Chinese side. Through Tibet. I was with a group of motorcycle riders. I traveled in a van though since I had not ridden in 9 years now and this ride was quite challenging in terms of terrain, traffic, temperature, thin air and much more. The biggest obstacle was getting a permit for Tibet. This would be in addit...
Crater Lake and Mount Shasta, April 2024

While returning from Oregon, I decided to visit a couple of volcanoes. The first one I flew over is Crater Lake National Park. I think it is the prettiest lake in the US and probably all over the world. Because it has pristine waters sitting in a perfect rim of a collapsed circular volcano (Mount Mazama, 5700 BC). It is the deepest lake in the US and 10th in the world. The lake bed has a few vo...

After witnessing total solar eclipse in August 2017 in Idaho, I had decided that the next time around, I want to see what it looks and feels like from the air. This meant a lot of people could be disappointed. I had friends and...

I worked for 34 years in Los Angeles DWP electricity generating stations that in the early years of my career burned natural gas and fuel oil for fuels to make steam in the boilers. In the later years of my career fuel oil burning was discontinued and only natural gas was burned. I worked as an operator, operating the large boilers and turbine generators. The generating stations I worked at were built in the 1950s and had a fully analog, primarily pneumatic based control system built by Bailey Meter Company. These generating stations have repowered with new combined cycle units that have computer based control system. With the old control systems the control room was filled with gauges, meters, knobs, switches, charts and bailey meter controls. Now new control rooms have a number of computer terminals and computer screens. One thing I did notice in this video was boiler inspection doors that were opened and people looking at the fire in the furnace. This tells me that these are balanced draft boilers that have both forced draft fans and induced draft fans and that the air pressure in the furnace is slightly below atmospheric pressure so that outside air flows through the inspection door and into the furnace. The other type of furnace is a pressurized furnace where if a hole occurs in the boiler casing, fire comes out of the furnace. As an operator I preferred balanced draft furnaces to pressurized furnaces.

@@davidgrisez Obviously you worked in the industry your entire career which is why you were able to spot such things. I assumed that opening the vent was sucking in air because combustion needs oxygen and it was pulling air in through that vent not realizing that there could be a pressurized furnace. There must be an advantage to pressurized furnace. What would that be? More effective burning hence more yield out of the same amount of coal? The coal burning power plant in Kemmerrer, Wyoming was purchased by Bill Gates and supposed to go nuclear. Any idea what is the delay there? Inspections? Federal permits?

    • @davidgrisez
      @davidgrisez หลายเดือนก่อน

@@WoodyWyoming There are both advantages and disadvantages to both a balanced draft boiler furnace and a pressurized boiler furnace. Here is one of the differences. A balanced draft furnace requires a minimum of 4 powerful fans. Two of the fans will be forced draft fans that take outdoor air and supply the air to the boiler. The other two fans will be induced draft fans on the exhaust of the boiler to discharge the combustion gases to the chimney. With a pressurized boiler furnace only two powerful forced draft fans are needed instead of four powerful fans. With a pressurized furnace the furnace enclosure must be made gas tight. If a furnace combustion air leak occurs with a pressurized furnace fire will come out of the boiler. With a balanced draft furnace if furnace chamber leaks occur, outside air will go into the boiler furnace and no flames will come out. This means that the boiler can continue to operate to a later date and repairs of a casing leak can be delayed. With a pressurized furnace the unit will need to be shutdown when an operator sees fire coming out of the furnace casing. Also when a lot of emissions control equipment is attached to a boiler it is preferable to have induced draft fans to move the combustion gases through the emissions control equipment. If this coal burning power plant is to be replaced with a nuclear power plant, the process of designing and building a nuclear plant takes a long time because of the many rules and regulations.

@ Very nicely explained. Obviously you have worked in that system. One thing that I don’t understand is what is the advantage of pressurized furnace. Yes it needs only two fans but it seems it will cost more to hold that pressure down and downtime is longer in case it leaks. Therefore I am assuming it is more efficient just like a turbo gas engine where gas and air mixture under pressure combusts better providing more propulsion of piston hence higher electricity generation. Did I get this part right?

Nobody knows there what is going on or they are tight lipped. You are right. There is neither war nor crisis going on there. What is the UN doing there? Maybe it is Western effort to keep China out of Nepal??! Or just helping out the villagers there? The armored vehicle drivers were rude and yelled at us for coming in front of them. We had to back up long ways. They were aggressive, kind of unbecoming of the UN, in my opinion.

    • @WoodyWyoming

Good question. That is the bone of contention there. China owns Tibet now and wants to keep it that way. Slowly the language and culture will change over a few generations. I think that’s the plan. Flying CCP flag is the least they can do. Nobody answers questions there. Either they don’t know or are afraid of telling me the truth. That’s all I can say.
