Planting Eucalyptus in Autumn 🍂

Has its advantages: - Surrounding vegetation is dying back, while Eucalyptus are evergreen grow all year. - Pests die off or are less prevalent, though fungal infections are more so. - No Hydration issues - Any feed you give the freshly planted seedlings is more likely to be taken up by them and not the surrounding vegetation. Well nourished and hydrated trees are better able to fight off pests...

Here in Galicia we plant globulus, nitens and regnans or obliqua in our forests, perhaps the worst in wind resistance are the regnans, the rest are holding up. You can try to lift them by throwing earth on them and with ropes.
Here it seems to depend on where they are, the soil in places isn't very deep, also its a North facing slope, so storms from the North are always worse. I have a few that I've secured to other more sturdy trees with ropes threaded through hose pipe to prevent damage, though generally I like to leave them and replant the losses or cut them back if they can be coppiced, and let the new growth feed new roots. At this time of year I'm always in two minds as it's not quite warm enough to guarantee survival. Thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
Been using these types of filters for 11 years now and they make the water taste so much nicer than bottled water 🙌 but wheres your mineral stones in the lower tank?
I'm certainly happy, tastes great, no more plastic bottles and in the long run its cheaper than bottled water as well 😁 I'll be adding another couple of water filters to the mains in the next couple of weeks, subscribe to be notified 🙏🏻 Either way, thanks for taking the time, always appreciated, good luck 🍀
I've fitted many infrared panels. The only heat you get is from the panel getting warm and not really the infrared
I used to have the 700w one behind the office chair, it would have been about a metre away from the back of the chair. It definitely increased the heat I was feeling, though as I say in the video, you need to be in reasonably close proximity. The 900w one in the gym likewise did make a difference, though not enough to make the room cozy, and the issue in the gym on a cold winter day would be the reflective weight bars wouldn't get warm at all; very chilling on the hands and demotivating 🙁 Currently warming my feet on the one below the desk 🙂 it does warm the surrounding area as well, though much more than a metre and the warming effect tails off significantly 😏 Thanks for taking 👍🏻much appreciated. Good luck 🍀 Subscribers help 🙏🏻
Yep, rubbish indeed, poor convection heaters is what they are! I tried branded infrared panel for my study 2x3M standard 2.3M ceiling height. Bought a 450W panel and mounted it on the ceiling above my chair/desk. I could only feel surface heat from it <0.5M away, and felt absolutely no warming effect on my head, body or hands. It would stay on for >2.5 hours to increase temp at desk level from 17.5 to 21 degree, and then cycle on for lengthy periods to keep the room at that temp. I worked out the RoI payback on this panel was nearly 5 years as it cost >2x my electric panel heater and overall wasn't that much cheaper to run as it was on a lot longer which negated it's lower wattage.
@@feled01 I do find the 300w one under the desk heats the surrounding area and great as a foot warmer, definitely keeping it🙂 Though as I say in the video, only useful in close proximity. Perhaps if the room was a dark colour it would have absorbed more heat; all the walls here are white which I was hoping would help, reflecting heat around until it contacted with me. Ces't la vie 😏 Good luck 🍀 Subscribers help 🙏🏻

On the whole, I agree with your assessment. As I have solar panels and a storage battery, and I have a tariff that has low cost electricity from midnight to 7:00 am for charging the battery, the infrared heaters nicely complement the set up I have. So, ideally, even without solar panels, it is worth looking at storage batteries to go with these infrared heaters.
Yes, if I had the solar panels and battery storage, I'd probably keep them and use them during Autumn and Spring. The person who suggested trying them is very much into solar PV and Battery storage; their old cottage would be difficult to retrofit with radiators or underfloor, so hence their interest in Infrared panels. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Subscribers help 🙏🏻 🍀
Only thing that I am concerned about watching this video is the way you store your logs next to the stove. Please move your logs away from it! Quite a number of house fires have been started this way.
Fair comment Pete 👍🏻 If you look just below middle left in the opening scene, there is a small square object, it's a temperature sensor which has registered a maximum of 25.7℃ since installing the boiler stove. If you look at the pipes coming up on either side you'll see a further two pipe thermometers, which I find very helpful. While heating the water, I allow the return temperature to get up to 50℃, about 54℃ on the feed; generally the feed is around 45℃ coming back 4℃ lower for the radiators. It's a boiler stove, and the tanks are in the sides, temperatures never exceed 70℃ (estimate, probably less) due to the circulation of water through the stove. It does give a good heat out into the room in front, though all the heat at the sides is taken away by the circulating water. I am as you are concerned though, a pump failure wouldn't be helpful, though I monitor that it's working properly on the same TP-Link app via a smart plug, and also its easy to see if there's an issue by looking at the feed and return pipe thermometers; if the return temperature isn't close to the feed then I would shut in the dampers and investigate. There's a lot less wood around the stove now, the recent cold snap is coming to an end. I'm more concerned about creosote buildup and very dry firewood reduces this and the risk of a chimney fire. Hence I stacked it up for this period. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Subscribers help 🙏🏻 🍀
@Craig-Mitchell It's good that you are monitoring the situation with temperature sensors and I suppose that being a boiler stove helps reduce the temperature directly around the stove. The best of luck with your project!
@@petestuart6584 Thanks Pete 👍🏻 Your comment was useful, I'll place the sensor closer to the feed (hotter) side of the stove and see exactly what the temperature is there 😉 Good luck 🍀 meantime...
Interested to know what temperature would logs stored beside the wood stove have to get to cause a fire?
@@Andy_John3.3 HI Andy I actually put the sensor in a couple of places near the stove, one about 10cm midway up and the other at the top of the pile, about 20cm from the stove. I managed to get the one at the top of the pile (furthest away from the stove) to reach 32.5℃, the one nearer but further down got to 30.3℃. I'll add it to a fuller video on the boiler stove installation which should be ready to share in about two weeks 😉 Subscriber to be notified 🙏🏻 Thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀

When you planted the eucalyptus did you have protection around the trunks to keep rabbits etc off?..
No James There were lots of Hares here to start with, they took a few nibbles of the young Eucalyptus, but once they found out how bad they tasted, they left them alone. A fox cub strolled by one day and I encouraged it as I was planting Paulownia, very palatable, often grown for livestock fodder. The fox is cheaper and more effective than tree guards 😉 th-cam.com/video/gOigXKqYatQ/w-d-xo.html Thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 subscribers help 🙏🏻 🍀
Here in New Zealand in the early 2000's the then Labour government suggested outlawing incandescent light bulbs to save energy, and replace them with LED's. We are mainly reliant on hydro, and the lakes were running low. The huge public outcry about the government being a "nanny state," and trying to tell us what to do lead to one of the reasons that that government was voted out For the last ten or so years incandescent bulbs for the home have pretty much been replaced by LED's. Reason? LED's are more efficient, need replacing far less often, save a lot of money in the long run, are price comparable, and probably the biggest reason, it's the way the lighting industry has moved. So, as you suggested, EV sales and use will overtake and replace petrol and diesel vehicles for all the obvious reasons. Haulage companies are already switching because of the massive savings on fuel and maintenance. Also, and it's something's most people don't realise, trucking companies either have to recondition or replace diesel engines after so many tens of thousands of kilometres because of all the hundreds of moving parts, I'm looking at long distance trucks/lorries in places like Australia and north America here
LEDs are fabulous, I got rid of the last of the fluorescent tubes in the outhouse a year or so ago. People often react, rather than analyse 😏 and as a result miss out for many years until things are mainstream ! Yep, electric motors have very few moving parts and so provided they are reasonable quality to start with and protected from the elements, they last indefinitely 😁 whereas, as you say, ICM's have many moving parts to wear out 🙁 Thanks for taking 👍🏻subscribers help 🙏🏻 🍀

@Craig-Mitchell This type needs to live in a hot weather .
Bit late with this but this fridge has a well known design flaw which causes this problem. On the disassembly you should also remove the 2 screws holding the water bottle at the bottom which is connected by 2 pipes, it will then just sit loose but still connected in bottom of fridge. This allows you to fully pull away the rear cover after unplugging the 2 small electrical connectors. You should then move the sensor from the top right of the element to the top left. You could buy kits that had a new sensor and some small modification parts for the back cover to help with the problem. Unfortunately sometimes the thermal fuses on the element could be knackered too. I purchased a black glass door version of this fridge in 2010, it was nothing but a pain due to this fault, even after installing all modifications to rectify the problem. There are loads of youtube videos regarding the fault. Samsung knew about the issue and should have issued a recall instead of expecting the owners to research and fund the modification. I have had other Samsung products, TV and washing machine, all were total garbage, vowed never to own anything made by them again, as did my extended family. Best decision I ever made. If you still have one of these fridges you can probably get the sensor etc and watch a video on how to replace it, which may give you a little relief for a while, but ultimately buy something else if and when you're able to.
As you say Steve, a bit late 🙂 I worked out it was only a temporary fix, and quickly replaced the Samsung fridge / freezer 😉 All the best for 2025 🍀 Subscribers help 🙏🏻

Hi James They are fine at the moment, the Psyllid is gone, the recent frosts would have helped, though I do think the garlic spray is beneficial. I have eucalyptus nittens, regnans, mountain gum and yellow gum trees. I'm at 600 feet above sea level in the South Wales valleys and they grow like weeds. They love wet Welsh weather.

Very informative. I agree it will be economical forces that advance renewable energy and EV adoption. Most people are in denial about the damage fossil fuels are doing to their environment and as a result their health.

I know its fun and cute to feed him, but it's not good. They need to learn how to find their own food and not rely on humans.
The main thing I love about him is that he is independent ! I don't feed him regularly, generally he finds his own food. Interestingly he made the first approaches when he was a cub ! sauntering around in the small back lawn. Despite being a cub, and at that time I didn't feed him at all; he is well capable of hunting and taking car of himself. Would be interesting to do some intentional breeding with so many species flowering, would love to see Nitens crossed with Subcrenulata.
I think it unlikely there will be a choice of which varieties cross. From early research I did, Eucalyptus cross pollinate readily, though a comment from another Eucalyptus grower suggested that they tend to remain true to producing tree, i.e. seed capsules on the Nitens will produce Nitens seed. Guess we'll have to wait and see... Subscribe to be notified when I get to that stage. Good luck 🍀 meantime.

please tell me what kind of frost your eucalyptus trees withstood?
It was perhaps -8℃ during the cold weather towards the end of 2022, though most of the damage was done by the freezing fog which covered the leaves in verglas. Those trees which were exposed to sunlight during the day, thawing the verglas were largely unaffected. While those trees in shadier areas where the verglas was permanent for around seven days were damaged, though most recovered. I'm on a north facing slope, any plantations of the same varieties on a south facing slop would probably survive more severe frosts. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀

That's interesting to hear that yours flowered after only a couple of years ! I've searched frequently and the information suggested from 3 to 15 years. I'll check out your channel now for the Paulownia video 😉 Good luck 🍀
Aqui en Galicia la borrasca Kirk soplo a 100 en mis eucaliptos y muchos acabaron en el suelo.¿Tienes algun plan para volver a ponerlos de pie? Tienen 2 años nitens
Storm Barra was the most severe storm here and quite a few of the Viminalis and Nitens blew down. I cut them back and some of the Viminalis recovered to some extent, though none of the Nitens. Storm Barra was in November, so not a growing season. I think more would have survived if it had been late spring. Generally I have a don't interfere policy, it they blew down or aren't hardy enough to survive the frosts, I replant with a variety I think will do better. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell thaks for your time.
Dig them out and start again,Eucalyptus are not suitable for windy areas, loads of accidents in OZ when they snap off during storms
Had quite a few storms here, Storm Barra was ferocious, probably gusts in excess of 100kph. A few badly planted ones were uprooted, some Viminalis regenerated, too early in the year for the Nitens to bounce back. The only one that snapped was a Regnans and that was due to some very wet heavy snow; I should have given it a good shake to dislodge the weight, ces't la vie 😏 Probably they have so much hydration available here; they are incredibly flexible. Storm Barra had them horizontal 😮 Thanks for sharing though 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀
Hi greg have you tryed potting on the eucalyptus to a bigger size ,so you don't have to do much weed control
Tried that the first year SuperKeen, but the stoney ground here meant it was a mission to plant them 😏 Would have taken me a couple of days to plant the 70 that I planted in less than an hour in the video. That said, I've changed my mind about the Paulownia, and will be growing them onto a metre tall before planting out. They need that start to escape the slugs here 😏 Thanks again for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
Love a good storm
They can be spectacular SuperKeen 😁 No car at the moment, or I'd have driven to Killkee where you can walk along the top of the cliffs. Been before very dramatic. Not too severe here, though I am sheltered from the South westerlies. As always, thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
Thanks for the update, Craig. Just wondering how deep Eucalypt roots go. have to be deep to support those beauties when matire. I'll say that mic you are using is good quality, top class in there conditions.
Thanks 👍🏻 Eucalyptus roots can go as deep as 20m 😮 though with plenty of hydration here in Ireland, perhaps a few metres. It isn't the wind that is the issue its wet ground which is slippery not just on the surface, and the roots pull lose more easily. Ground here is quite dry at the moment. The rain from Ashley is starting now, though the wind is forecast to decrease around the time 8pm local, so they should be fine 🤞🏻 Strongest gust so far 64kph Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 🍀
Thanks for the update. This summer I planted 2-300 gunnii on a former power station clinker ash tip, steep slope, no soil, plated right in the middle of summer during the heat wave and drought, only lost 3 or 4 of them, and tbf they did get a bit dry in their cell trays before planting, unbelievably hardy plants.
That's quite phenomenal evojigger, I wouldn't have thought they'd have survived growing conditions as hostile as that 😮 Gunnii are thought to be better in dryer conditions, but still, I'm surprised they grew in coal 'presumably' ash ! Thanks as always for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell Shocked me how well they have taken. I made the mistake of putting miracle grow in their cells after putting the seedlings in the cell trays during spring. They got too tall so quickly I had to plant them, hence middle of the summer planting. Its coal clinker, imagine volcanic gravel.
No issues with planting Eucalyptus during the summer. The first year I did this, I made sure to plant at least one Eucalyptus in every month of the year, even if it was dry. Made little difference 😉 Though I'm sure there are limits, wet in Ireland is a relative term. I imagined coal clinker to be corrosive, but perhaps it was washed over the years and therefore now provides a good free draining growing medium; still I'm very surprised by your results, thanks for letting us all know 👍🏻 🍀
very nice
If you're going to split firewood buy a log splitter! especially for softwoods which don't split quite as snappily as hardwoods. Also (as Craig mentions) split your firewood first, drying will proceed so much faster and much more thoroughly.
Very Nice Video
Guess I'm gonna be the first one to comment..anyway nice to meet ya!
GOD BLESS YOU KIND SIR, I HAVE HAD THOUGHTS OF OUT-WORLDLY ANGER DUE TO THIS CURTAIN TRACK. YOU HAVE EASED IT. MAY GOD GIFT YOU YOUR DESIRES.
Glad it helped 🙂 Subscribing would be appreciated 🙏🏻 Good luck 🍀 meantime
1:00 "What if you want to burn wet firewood? Not much" that is, if you are lucky. If not, chimney fire can happen.
Depends how wet the firewood is, but personally 10% moisture content or lower 😉 Thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
