Enneagram Type 1 and Type 6: What's the Difference
The Enneagram Type 1 is striving to feel perfect. They see the world through right vs. wrong, good vs. bad, and what needs to be fixed. Type 1's tend to avoid any situation where they might be criticized for doing it "wrong."
The Enneagram Type 6 is striving to feel secure. When that lens is being used, they see the world through risks, threats, and what might go wrong. They tend to avoid any situation that would leave them feeling unprepared and without a plan.
These two types are common "look-alikes" that can get confused because of their preference for a good plan, their focus on the common good (vs. what's best for themselves), and their desire to "get it right."
While those behaviors might look similar, what the feeling need behind each of them is very different.
When you watch the video here you'll get additional insights into some of those key differences that include:
one right way vs. multiple ways
what it looks like to worry about doing it right
what happens when things go wrong
and the supporting and neglected type for each is that may offer clues into common challenges

    Thank you for your insights. I am trying to decide wether my mother is a 1 or a 3. You brought up the perfect/efficient dilemma and I have seen this in another video. So I asked her. She has been working with food all her life and is a real workoholic. Now she is retired but still take on projects. She is always stressed and around noon "half the day is gone" and "I have no time to do xxx". Anyway I asked in the middle of her food preparing if you can choose. Would you want to be perfect or be done quick and she chose to be perfect. So 1 I guess. At the same time type 1 don't strike me to be stressed and always wanting to squeeze as much productivity in as possible during a day. That feels more like a 3. But that test still makes me lean more towards 1 so thank you 😊

     I ruled out Type 5 because I’m not what is described as a private/secretive person and I’m not socially awkward. I am the self pres Type 3 countertype which made it hard to initially figure out. The Enneagram is indeed a powerful tool for self awareness, growth, and change. I love it!

    This gives me more clarity between being a 3 or 6! I was tested by a therapist and even he wasn't sure if I am a 3 or 6. After your video, I feel more aligned with a 6 because of the intense anxiety I feel. However, I am an "achiever" as well. What subtype of 6 can look like a 3 in terms of achieving?

    • @enneagrammba
      @enneagrammba หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad it was helpful - thank you for sharing your feedback here! It's common for all types of 6s to identify as an "achiever" - the difference is what is driving it... Achieving from a place of anxiety and fear or achieving from a place of wanting to feel outstanding. A Transmitting Six (commonly known as Sexual Six) can be a bit more aggressive and action-oriented, sometimes "looking" like a 3 or 8.

    Please could you give your opinion on whether Quentin Crisp was a core 7 with a huge 4 heart fix, or a core 4 with a huge 7 head fix? It is very apparent from some interviews about how he lived that he was self preservation last, which is very rare on top of an already less common type structure, which I guess is why he seems so "extreme" compared to most people who have 4 with 7 or 7 with 4. He is an inspiration to me but very confusing to Enneagram type.

    I'm ESTJ, LSE, though my enneagram tests usually give 8 or 1, both very high. I've watched the video and I'm still both...😂 Tbh I feel it is dumb to try to forcefully type myself into one of them, because it looks like I'm indeed a mix of both, but not entirely any one of them. I'll look into those wings more to see if they make sense, Until now 8w7 makes the more sense. Let's see.

    8w7 here, actually disagree with the details part. Because we like to have control over our environments we do like to look at details and I do like the rules; as long as I’m the one who made them.

    • @realSimoneCherie
      @realSimoneCherie หลายเดือนก่อน

      different stroke. I have no patience for details and butt heads often with people who are fixated on them or who are more rules focused than results focused like all compliance types 1, 2, 6

    • @ThePosh_Parrot
      @ThePosh_Parrot หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@realSimoneCherie sure, sometimes though it’s the attention to details that end up producing the results. I only like to follow rules that I made or I agree with, whereas compliance types will follow the rules because that’s what you’re supposed to do. Whereas the cp6s will break the rules or not follow them just for the sake of that. The 8 does what serves them and their way best

  • @nurtureulifecoaching3226
    @nurtureulifecoaching3226 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I ruled out 6 because in spite of a dominant self preservation instinct, I’m much more independent, not a fan of groups, like to work alone, and strive to be self sufficient.

    • @ThePosh_Parrot
      @ThePosh_Parrot 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably an 8, I like checklists too, it actually helps me feel more I control of things. My business partner is a 3 and is big picture, doesn’t like to do lists but is better at helping the group work together and noticing others strengths, where as an 8 I’m more can they keep up with me or can’t they. So maybe in that way the threes are more detail oriented on some things

    • @realSimoneCherie
      @realSimoneCherie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Loving checklists has levels. My partner is a three and they have a checklist for every area of their life - they don’t just love them, they hold them up as a way to measure themselves and they experience a sense of failure if they are incomplete or if they miss days That shows a clear process orientation. I have an outcome (results over process) orientation. If I accomplish a goal, I do not care what the process was, I have no Fidelity to the process and will abandon it altogether if I can accomplish my goal another way.

    Yeah, you have a tendancy to think that everybody is alike at their core... but that there are anomalies or wild cards in the deck. So for a 5, you are thinking that people with a brain, do not necessarily want or need you around all the time. It's hard to believe that a lot of people need or desire to be around people a lot.

    I'm so glad Ellen said she loves details and spreadsheets - That's so me! I'm more of a 5 at my remote work- data geek who can work alone and with groups. I'm also a voracious reader and documentary watcher - not for competency but rather because it's fun or something I'm interested in. I also hate to be micromanaged, anticipate the future more than remaining present, seek freedom and fun in everything- worked corporate for 20 years at the same company BUT I was a "floating" assistant - someone who's shifted to a new department every 2 years. I'm definitely a 7 and it was so great hearing you all share work experiences. Thanks for this, Sarah, Kate, and Ellen :) EDIT UPDATE: So, turns out, I'm a type 2 but I do have 7 in my tritype (2-7-1) so the stuff I said is still relevant :)

    To make it simple. Strong desire to conquer and possibly reform particular selected areas in life is better fit for Type1 or Type3? Else? There is no rush in achieving goals and even long periods of wasting time is alowed but in long-term it is a must and some goals could be achievied very suddenly. Don't care about how it looks to others but like the fact that have many invisible thropies. Strong perfectionism but learned that it is better done in decent way than perfect never done.

    funny thing how the person who typed me got my enneagram wrong. He typed me as a 7w8, but I feel more of that challenger side as a primary. This is because as someone who is currently under an intense amount of stress, I obsess over it and cannot let it go until it is dealt with. Waiting for a face to face conversation about addressing the issues is difficult for me. I do not avoid pain overall. Of course I'll do things like destress, take - or attempt to take my mind off of things for the sake of my sanity, but I'm a fighter lol

    Great contrast! I am a type one but I was initially torn between 1 and 5. This is helpful and I wish I would have had it back then 👍🏼

    I'm a 9w1 INFP with a 945 tritype. I wish more counselors/coaches/psychologists used the Enneagram as a tool to help their clients.

    Yeah... I'm definitely a 3 according to this. I'm super passionate about my ideals and values which comes off very 8-ish. Thanks so much for making this!

    how would you describe someone who one one hand is more focus on the end result but in the other hand is also intense with feelings of anxiety and worries

    • @enneagrammba
      @enneagrammba ปีที่แล้ว

      great question - both types can be focused on the end result and experience feelings of anxiety and worry. For a type 3 that worry might be that the end result won't give them the image of being successful or outstanding, while the type 6 might be more worried that the result won't give them the safety (financially, physically, emotionally, etc.) that they're wanting. It all comes down to that core motive - Would you rather feel successful and outstanding (3) -or - feel safe and secure (6)?
