360° VR Flight in a Cessna 140 - Indiana Dunes National Park
A gorgeous 360° VR flight over the Indiana Dunes National Park beach. Trying out a new carbon fiber boom pole to replace the one I broke at Oshkosh (the old one wouldn't support a heavy backpack)! Should make for some epic views. Testing a little more editing with 360° videos, so let me know what you think! Good or bad, I love getting your comments! Also, please check out the links in the description, as they really help to support this channel. Thanks for watching!

CLICK AND HOLD TO LOOK AROUND - Come along for a bug smashing 360 VR flight in the Cessna 140! Weather is moving into the area so I thought I'd go up for a short flight to do a couple landings at some nice private strips in the area. You can see some light rain on the bugs if you look close, but the clouds were beautiful. Around the 20 min mark, there's a pretty close call with a Cessna 172! A ...

What settings do you use to stop outside view from inside cockpit from being too bright. I can film inside ok but outside is way too bright. Any help appreciated.
It has gear extensions.
I HAD gear extensions. In one of my other videos, I test flew it after taking them off. Tracks so straight now and feels more responsive.
Check out my video where I fly this in Scooter's STOL event here: th-cam.com/video/Ln2xPQrBoSQ/w-d-xo.html
Just came across this - Great video! Hope you make it again this year.
Definitely! I'll see you there! I'll be in the spam can class this year though, so you'll have one less person below you in the standings 😉
Great power couple. New subscriber here. Keep it up.
Thanks so much! More coming soon for sure and she'll be joining me for Scooter's STOL even event next weekend 😁
Great video. I'm restoring a 1946 Bellanca at C56 but don't have my tailwheel endorsement yet so it's nice to see you making the necessary control inputs and gives me an idea of what's needed.
Bult isn't too far from here! I assume I'll get to see that Cruisair at Brodhead when it's done? Or maybe I'll just stop by sometime...
@@wheelsupbardown You're welcome to stop by. Most Wednesdays we're out there working on it in the afternoon. We're hoping to get some paint on starting this Wednesday. If you stop by the line guys all know about it and can direct you. We're in hanger row E on the east side.
@@FlyMidwestWithRuss-e1c As soon as I can find a day to play hooky!
What are we seeing?
If you look toward the top of the windscreen at the zoom in, you can see the 172 as it goes over me. The insta360 really doesn't do it justice, as we were within 50ft difference in altitude before I dove
Love your videos. Nice cross wind correction and love where you kept it in ground effect until the end of the grass. I have a 140 and they are the best but somewhat unforgiving so you really have to fly em. Great video.
Thank you so much! It'd been a while, but comments like yours make sure I'll always put out more videos. Being a 140 pilot definitely keeps you honest! Would you throw your 140 keys to a Champ pilot??? Enough said! 😉
By the way, I just checked out your first tailwheel solo video. Beautiful airplane, and nice job keeping it on the centerline!
Thanks so much, one of the best things I’ve done buying that plane. I have flown it a ton since then but can never get complacent that’s for sure.
Oh I get it. It's way to easy to let your guard down! One of the reasons I like playing in the grass is it keeps me a bit safer lol
Just bought one I have heard they like to nose over a d just 3. 140 s nosed over this past 2 weeks what is the basic problem with that characteristic? Thanks
I've seen a lot of talk about it, and this one had gear extenders that moved the axles forward a few inches to match where the later cessna 140s axles are to help. That said, we took them off during an annual because it dropped the nose an inch and a half and added a few pounds. You can see the results in one of my other videos, but the long and the short... I think it tracks better, and even though the tail comes up a bit easier, if you keep the yoke back and are easy on the brakes, it isn't an issue. If you're at OSH, I'm here through Saturday and would love to chat!
sh1tty music is sth1tty
Come on, EAA! Not an Immelman.
Thanks, I'm don't do a lot of aerobatics myself, so you're probably right.
I probably had 100 hours in 140s by the time I had 200 hours total. Flew them all over Missouri (where I lived then). As I recall, they would indicate 105 mph flying fairly low (where I flew them most of the time). Very slow climber with two people on a hot summer day.
Apt description for sure. I started my training in a Luscombe 8A that outperformed it on 20 fewer horsepower. That said, if it's just me, I can cruise 118 mph, as I have a fairly course prop. Hell of a plane to train in though, compared to the champs and cubs, lol. I'm sure that made every other airplane easy!
Just retired from teaching IOT take up full time writing and flying. Looking forward to airplane camping in remote places. The main difference is I’ll leave the xx and the right seat to add a metal detector, gold pans, fishing rods, and a drone. Thanks for the video.
Congratulations and I hope you enjoy your retirement! Airplane camping is a great way to get away,! Just make sure to involve the better half on occasion to avoid AIDS (Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome 😉)! I actually have a video on my future to do list where I fly Sarah to her favorite soap making place 😁
Finally! Thanks a lot!
Took me long enough to figure it out, and that's why I made it! Glad I could help!

I used to work at Metro as an A&P! Currently thinking about purchasing a 140A project. Enjoying the videos!
Aviation is a small world! Sarah (seen in some other videos) lived in Indy before moving up here, so I flew into Metro a LOT when we were dating!
@@wheelsupbardown aviation absolutely is the “smallest world”. Maybe we will cross paths this year!
@@Joncarver226 Well I may hit Metro to stop at Perani's once in a while for hockey gear, lol. I hit flyins when I can too, so feel free to stop and chat if you see the airplane!
@@wheelsupbardown will be sure to do so!
Beautiful 140. see you again
Thanks!
You need to go visit 'Decatur Cheese' when you are there next time. (if you haven't already tried their cheese curds and cheese.) Take care - thank you for the video.
I love cheese curds! Will do! I think that year we drove into town and had pizza from that Harry Potter place!
@@wheelsupbardown So search for decatur dairy. if you like baby swiss - try a sample of Stettler Swiss. But the curds are made right there in the plant. Also they do make grilled cheese sandwiches with their own special sauce. (limited hours)
Brodhead is my favorite fly in. In many ways, better than Oshkosh. I’ve been 8 or 9 times in my 140. Missed 2022….did the 120-140 convention at Sturgis instead. Sorry I missed you (can’t do everything 😉). You coming to Poplar Grove for the convention this year?
I might do that! It's often just one where I've had something going on, but if you ever see me, stop and say hi! I'll probably hit Oshkosh, Broadhead, maybe Blakesburg, and a few others in the area!
Absolutely loved this video and thank you for sharing it, Yes, I hit the subscribe button, I know a good channel when I spot one :)
Thanks so much! I've been slacking a bit on the channel lately, but it'll definitely pick up as the weather gets better!
Wat is the payload of the 140? (not counting full fuel load)
In ours, the empty weight is 904lbs, so with a gross weight of 1450, useful is 546. Full fuel is 25 gallons, or 150lbs. That leaves a payload of 396lbs. Of course, every aircraft has a different empty weight with paint, upholstery, and/or fancy panels, so YMMV!
Thanks, that compares to a Vashon.
Awesome video. Thanks SO MUCH 🙏
Thanks! I couldn't find a video on how to do this when I was trying, so I made it hoping to help others!
Might look at editing 1:05 in light of 14 CFR 61.57.
I see how you could think that would apply listening to it again, but what I actually said was "I hadn't flown in like 5 months, so..." referencing the video here: th-cam.com/video/tfAZWkIfN_Q/w-d-xo.html This video was about a week later. It's all in my logbook, but thanks for looking out! I hope you enjoy the videos!
My apologies, misunderstood.@@wheelsupbardown
@@scottbyrd3662 No worries, when I watched it back, it wasn't very obvious!
One question: Would a 140 be a good weekend getaway plane? Something me and my wife could use to travel to a hiking location 350 miles away. 2 ppl (average wt), and a couple bags.
We often use it for exactly that, but we've had to pack pretty light to stay under gross. Check out my video on lightweight airplane camping gear, I go over what gear I use and the weight or the reason I use it. Compared to a lot of similar airplanes like Luscombes, Taylorcrafts, Champs, Chiefs, and Cubs, I think the 140 is a really good balanced set of trade-offs. Compared to a Super Cub though, well that could carry you, your mother-in-law, and a moose carcass out of a shorter strip 😉
Thanks for coming to the STOL and thanks for a great story on TH-cam about it. Hope to see you next year!
I can't wait! I had so much fun! Not sure what I'll be flying, but hope I'm in the class with that super stinson!
@@wheelsupbardown after last year I think I am going to have a 120/140/150 class next year. The other option would be to have another rule set for folks flying those type of planes. I really liked that we had pilots willing to participate in the Cessna monocoque planes knowing they wouldn't win but wanting to have fun and learn. I really want to promote that idea. That is what the Great Lakes STOL is about.
That's a great philosophy, and honestly, it's much more approachable than something like national.
I've been the announcer for this event 2021 and 2023. I keep my 1946 Cessna-140 at Owosso (KRNP) about 15 miles south of Chesaning. I'll be announcing and flying next year. Hope to see you back.
Heck yeah! Loved the event so I'll definitely be back! Probably still in the 140, but who knows.... my dad is working on a C-90 champ 😉
cool stuff... camping flying is great.. good filming.. keep on
Thanks!
I used to have a C140 (140LB, we named her Lusty Betty), we didn't have those window latches - ours were much smaller and basically just held the window closed. With the window open it would float up and lay against the bottom of the wing in flight. We lost a window once, just days before we were going to Oshkosh, out over Galveston Bay. We were doing some videoing, opened the right window, and instead of floating up to the bottom of the wing like it usually did, it half opened, oscillated a bit then departed the aircraft. It's likely still at the bottom of Galveston Bay to this day.
Love that story! The latches sound more like the latches on a 150, which I'd greatly prefer. I had a similar predicament in an older 172 when flying around with the windows open. I didn't lose the window, but the blind nut on the window catch (didn't let it open all the way) fell off and into the window frame. I didn't really mind it opening all the way, but in the end, my mechanic (dad) decided to fix it 🙄
Another great video, ruined by music
I actually appreciate feedback, good and bad. Honestly this was the second video I ever uploaded, and I've always worked to get better at this craft. I'd be interested in whether or not you think I've gotten better or worse!
Nice video and filmography. I'm hoping to get a license to fly in the next 2-3 years (and a plane). I look forward to sharing it with the family making and making good memories. You guys do such a great job of keeping it fun. Keep it up.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Fly in videos end up being kind of tough to make because I don't really have a plan so I'm glad it turned out well!
I got my PPL in a c140 on a grass strip near Ft Wayne. Loved every minute of it. When I got my license I bought a c206 which is a beefy 182. My family and I love to take trips. Where do you camp in Indiana or near by states?
Mostly I've done spots in Michigan or Wisconsin. My favorite so far has been 5D5 in MI, with a nice hike out to the lake in the morning.
I like the sun visor on your 140. Was it homemade?
It was on the airplane when we got it, but it definitely looks like it. It's just a sheet of smoke acrylic that's been cut to fit and drilled to mount on the existing hardware.
Is your plane stock?
Yes sir. The Great Lakes STOL has an under 100HP class so it was just me, a J3, a Taylorcraft, and a J-5.
Great video! This info is indispensable, I haven’t seen anyone else do this. Really appreciate all of your transparency on why you chose what you did and where pilots can buy this gear. Subscribed!👍
Thanks so much! This video took a ton of work and comments like yours help keep me going! I've been pretty focused on a job search lately, but there's definitely more coming!
@@wheelsupbardown it’s funny, all the videos I put the most effort into usually get low views. It’s counterintuitive, and messes with your will to keep creating. I really like your channel and video content, keep going!! Good luck with the job hunt, been there too but it’ll work out 👍👍
@@GingerThePlane The job hunt is moving now, but man it's a tough hunt to be on if you've been out of it for a while! Took me weeks to get up to speed! Anyway, guess whose channel I'm checking out now! 😉

Used to scare the 💩 out of me flying with my dad and that window would pop open
Yeah, still startles me when my elbow accidentally pops it open! 🤣

That’s cool Logansport is my hometown, I fly out of khfy in Greenwood. That’s a great looking plane where do you fly to go camping in it?
I've flown into KHFY a bunch! Great staff at the FBI! I've done a few camps up in MI, but the next one I'm hoping to make is Cheat River's fall fly in.
❤❤❤. Top. Máquina
I participated in that last year and had a great time. I had a conflict this year, but I hope Scooter puts another one together next summer. It's great that people compete using the aircraft that they normally fly, rather than just purpose-built aircraft.
It might of been the most fun I've had in an airplane! I know he plans to, so hopefully you'll be in next year's video 😉
Waiting for next year to bring back the pucker factor 😂
Lol, great meeting you, man! We'll definitely be hitting some of the same events before then, too!

Is this configuration stock? I usually fly the tail on mine during take off. That little 4 cylinder boxer only puts out 85 horses. With the tail on the ground, I wouldn't be off the ground until 1/2 way down the runway.
This is on 6.00x6 mains without the extenders and a maule tailwheel. If you have extenders or a 3200 on the tail, it could be lowering your AOA on the ground. This is a c85,too. If I'm heavy, it needs some speed though.
You should still S-turn because of children and dogs. Never know. Cats are fair game
I sit high enough I can see quite well over the nose and have good side visibility as well. If I were on any bigger tires, it'd probably be to high though.
Amazing video! How did you sync the Insta360 video with the rest of your GoPro Cam when you edited the video?
Thanks so much! Honestly, the 360 video is one of the most time consuming parts of my editing. I use insta360 studio on PC to edit and export the 360 vids. Then I manually line them up over my timeline (in Davinci Resolve). I appreciate that someone could realize the amount of work that is!
@@wheelsupbardown also thanks for your Devinci video. I hope that it supports syncing with the GPS track in MP4 file since my GoPro outside the airplane doesn’t have the same sound in the cockpit.
Thanks again! I really made that video because I couldn't find it when I was looking. I haven't tried with GPS track, but let me know if it works!
