Northern Thunder HOG Rally Ride With 150 Harley-Davidsons To Whangamomona Hotel
Seven HOG Chapters combined to ride together to the Whangamomona Hotel during the Northern Thunder HOG rally organised by our friends at HOG East Coast Chapter.
The thunder run ride was the feature event of the weekend and ran from the rally venue in New Plymouth to the Whangamomona Hotel located at the midway point of the Forgotten Highway, state highway 43, in the self proclaimed republic of Whangamomona. It's a 220km round trip from New Plymouth to Whangamomona and covers some great riding roads and amazing scenery. The ride was split into several groups and we were riding in the second group to leave the Plymouth International Hotel travelling at an unhurried pace to ensure we didn't overwhelm the hotel staff by all arriving at once.
I filmed the entire ride but due to rain in the middle section of the outwards journey was unable to use some of the footage over the Strathmore Saddle but the last and best section over the Whangamomona Saddle is complete including our arrival at the hotel. The roads were dry on the return journey and a much more robust pace was managed heading back into New Plymouth.
The weekend was a huge success and Marcus and the whole team at HOG East Coast Chapter have certainly raised the bar for future North Island HOG Chapter rallies.
Ride safe, have fun.

On this weeks video I take a quick dash along Auckland's northern motorway on a sunny weekend riding northbound from Albany and exiting at Millwater. In A David And Goliath Encounter We Leave An Aston Martin DB11 AMR Far Behind
มุมมอง 8425 หลายเดือนก่อน
During a recent ride through the Waikato we shared the road with an amazing looking Aston Martin DB11 AMR V12. Eventually we had to overtake them as they needed a lot more road room to exercise all that muscle. It looks like this fairly rare model is packaged with a twin turbocharged 5.2 litre V12 generating 630bhp and has a top speed in excess of 330kmh so it carries a whole lot more brute for...
We Left Bluff To Ride To Motorcycle Mecca In Invercargill

This video was filmed back in April on the 30 km journey from Bluff to Invercargill where we rode back down the Bluff Highway to the Motorcycle Mecca Museum and Cafe for lunch. After our meal we travelled onwards through the Catlins and up to Mosgiel for the night so we certainly got in our fair share of riding during this southern tour. The weather wasn't the greatest on this day but that just...
Playing Cat And Mouse With Two Highway Patrol Cars On Auckland Motorway

In todays video I encounter two highway patrol cars who are travelling just under the speed limit on state highway 1 and rather than queue up behind them I decided to overtake them in probably the slowest overtaking manoeuvre I have ever performed on my bike. Great video, helpful for first time sailors with motorcycles🤙
Glad to help out, hope you have a safe and enjoyable crossing! 😎🤘
Glad you found it useful. Hope you have a good crossing 😎🤘
Nice work, cruising. Making me home sick, my old thrashing grounds
cheers mate, bridge is still there and traffic still gets a little heavy from time to time but there's no place like home eh ? 😎🤘
Your last name isnt Jass is it?
I was coming home I seen you riding in the rain past highbrook
Yeah, we rode back on Sunday. It rained most of the way and we hit some heavy traffic when we come over the top of the Bombays and had a slow ride from there lane splitting until we got to the bridge. All part of the adventure 😎🤘
@@HughBeRidingI was telling my wife that was hughberiding
i enjoyed the ride thks but the sound of the hogs would have sounded nicer
haha, yeah it was a 50/50 coin toss. Next time !
Great road and video but seriously, a radar detector on a Harley 😝
I know right, what an anomaly 🤣
Awesome footage HughBe, it was an exciting ride there and back, bugga about the unusable footage, gee those bloody Sport Glides are good on the corners...
It was a great day, it's always fun getting onto interesting roads that you have never travelled before and this was my first taste of SH43. And yes, the evidence in this video shows those Sport Glides are fire crackers in the twisties 😎
Always great to watch your rides, enjoyed this with the accompanying music.
cheers, glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 😎
Fantastic time with our HOG family ❤
Yes, the bar has been raised for 2026 😎
Great ride out to the pub we do it at least once a month one of the great rides here in The Naki 😊
My first time out there and it won't be the last, really enjoyed the ride 😎
Great video! I ride in Auckland too. Nice to see some slow, calm, calculated, safe splitting. 👍
cheers, it's all about survival, and getting home at the end of the day.
you can smell the sea? Nah that's just Kelly! (I don't know any Kelly's out there it's just a random name that came to mind because it rhymes) Been a long time since I've thrown a hook off that Wharf... Not sure how I would attach a rod to my bike, (but will have to figure something out to do that in the next 7 weeks)
All you need is a rod that screws together like a pool cue then it's easy to strap it on the bike and find a wharf to sling your hook 😎
growing up in the Thames Valley, twisty roads with no streetlights were the norm... in fact the best time to do the Coast road is at night as you can see the oncoming headlights from kilometres away and every time you round a bend you have another chance to see how far away they are. The same actually applies on these types of road where the streetlights do not MASK the headlights of other vehicles lighting up the road and surrounding area as approach a blind corner (putting streetlights up on those bends would actually be dangerous!)
Sorry for late reply, somehow missed your comments when they were made nearly two weeks ago. You're not wrong about the visibility thing at night but of course that only works if the approaching vehicle has their headlights turned on 🤣Thanks for watching
Any tips on strapping the bike down? You provide your own straps etc? I'm doing my first crossing in the new year... excitied but nervous!
I bought a couple of basic S hook tie down sets from the local hardware store (Bunnings/Mitre10) which cost around $15 per 2pk. I found that I only used two at the front end of the bike but I carried three with me just in case one of them malfunctioned or I needed to tie it down at the rear as well. One thing I learned after a couple of crossings is I am no expert on using standard tie down ratchet sets and it was then I found out about retractable S-hook tie down sets which are basically idiot proof and I recommend them if you’re in the same situation as me. Cost a little more - about $30 for a 2 pack - but well worth the money in my opinion. On my bike I have fixed T-bars so I loop a padded Wonder Bar Strap for tie downs over the handlebar grips and secure the straps to that, one on each side connected to the deck hooks, works well without compromising the handlebars. Enjoy your crossing and the amazing South Island roads and views. Thanks for watching
@ So good! Thanks heaps for that info. Keep the shiny side up 🙌🏽 🏍️
What a great cause…looks like they loved it too!…Well done to you all👏Saw yous up Wellsford last Sunday…I was parked in town on a Heritage when yous were all leaving!
It was a fabulous day which had everyone smiling. And yes, the other Sunday we passed through Wellsford on the way up to Dargaville 😎
Race4Life is such a good cause. My wife and I have been fortunate enough to help some of their families build memories with their loved ones as their time comes to an end. It's a truly humbling experance. I encourage every one to help in any way they can, be it with services through a business, a donation or events like this.Great stuff guys.
Thanks for your words, you are so right. Taking part in Race4Life as a volunteer is truly humbling and unforgettable
Mad respect to you Hugh, my nerves would have been shot to shit doing that.
It was the easiest thing to do with these wonderful souls, the time passed very quickly and we shared moments with so many happy people
Id so like to partake in the next one
take a look at the website, there are ways to help out as volunteers on the day. Its very enriching for the soul
Hello! Is it possible to add this video to my future plans? Thanks for letting me know! :)
yes you can with credit back etc
What an event! Thank you and all of the riders for being a part of it.
It was a fabulous event and we were very pleased to be a part of it. Already looking forward to next years event
🏍🏎🚁😍
Good times were had 😎
😊
Great ride Vid Hugh, well done. I really miss riding with you guys 😪
There's always room on a ride for you if you ever find yourself back in EnZed 😎
In my V8 hooning days I would find very low expensive cars like that did not do well at speed on a lot of our roads, if they did go fast it was usually accompanied by a shower of sparks out he back
Sounds like a fun thing to do, those super cars aren't very practical when it comes to regular roads 😅
I went up North all the way to Cape Reinga in 1996 & some if the roads I went on were gravel like the Kauri forest & North of Auckland along the coast. Was that the Hibiscus Coast Highway was it gravel back in 1995-96? I remember turning off main Hwy 1 & went along coast & it was gravel. Same with Kauri Forest was all gravel but seen videos where it's all sealed now & be a great ride on road bike 🏍. Haven't been North of Auckland since 2001.
yeah man, that's a while ago now. You need to ride up there again, the roads are all sealed right the way up to Cape Reinga although for now you need to go up on SH10 from Pakaraka because a massive chunk of SH1 through Mangamuka Gorge is still closed while they are working on slip repairs from some storm damage in 2022.
Tangowahine is bikers road
that's truth right there 😎
Got 2b one of the best bike ride to the mangakahia rd parakao
yeah, I was very happy to be shown this route and it definitely won't be the last time I ride it
Great video. Some poor positioning when taking the bends!!
I suppose empty roads can sometimes create a lapse in usual caution and care, no harm done
Looks like a stunning day guys 👍
Yes it was especially for a mid winter ride, couldn't have been better
get near the ridge lookout and you get a good idea of the weather alright... I ride a lightweight ADV over there, and the wind makes it quite nerve racking!
Haha, yes, it can get gusty up there sometimes. Safe riding !
Hi , we are curious: What is the electronic gizmo on the handle bars?
Hi, that’s a radar detector. Adaptiv TPX Pro 3 is the model name. Legal to operate here in NZ. 😎
They work well and saved me from losing my license quite a fee times
As per norm HughBe, a great vid. 😎
Cheers TJ, it was a really good ride up to Parakao, looking forward to a repeat dose sometime 😎
Northland definitely has some epic scenery
It absolutely does and it was looking real fine on this particular day 😎
Fantastic ride mate. Definitely going to go that way to Parakao. You had perfect weather for it too
yeah, it's a great route up that Tangowahine Valley Road from SH14. We headed back to the smoke along the usual way though via Maungatapere and on the motorway at Otaika 😎
Looked like a beauty day
yes, it was a real ripper of a day, quite the unexpected gem amongst a couple of wet months 😎
🏍👏
you would have enjoyed this one 😎
So why do u totally change the way u drive around cops, u should be driving very carefully all the time, 90% of people dont realise its legal, so u are pissing off 90% of people
In respect of lane splitting there was no change in the way I was riding when going past the police vehicles and any other vehicles and the commentary also makes it clear that the main thing about lane splitting is be safe and don't be a dick about it. Thanks for watching.
Great video thanks! Gonna do the loop tomorrow on my Trumpy Bobber 🤘🏻👍🏻
Hope you enjoyed your run around the loop, it’s always a good day 😎
I ride that stretch from Manukau to the city most days and back and done lots of touring. I see numerous patrol cars. Never been stopped. So long as you are riding safe with proper gear (even if i am a bit quick sometimes and lane split) they have always just left me alone. I am always expecting an over zealous one.. its probably matter of time.
Same as me on every count, hardly ever been stopped and as long as you lane split sensibly without putting yourself or others at risk they tend to leave you alone. Cheers 😎
What a shit day at the end. Yep if you don't go over the speed limit I can't see any issues with passing a Cop car. Thanks for the video.
Cheers, thanks for watching 😎
That is a crime fake gun or not ....
Yup, I have to agree, at the very least a crime of gross stupidity
The problem is when people see cops on the rd they shit themselves and slow down. You don't have to go same speed as cops if they are doing 90 on a 100k motorway just stick to the speed limit but watch out when they are actually doing 100
Exactly 💯 😎
❤ride it before its illegal. Fks sakembe wary for moronic tourist drivers. Take your dryzabone. Ride safe ❤
Thanks for watching, agree with everything you just said 😎
Its imp grotto you gotta keep an eye on 😂❤😊
definitely got to look out for the imp grottos 💯 😎
Sounds like Bob and knob bobs laugh
exactly the sound I was going for !
@@HughBeRiding what sound is that knobbs or bobbs
yaaa hes back....
Good some good film from yesterday's ride which might just make it to the TH-cams one day 🤣
Nice ride dude 👍
yeah, it was one of those great weather late winter rides 😎
Keep left unless passing mate. You are one of those people holding up traffic
I was passing mate and looking in the rearview mirror there was no single soul being impeded by me. Strangely hardly anybody is keen to zip on past a highway patrol car which is doing 98kmh in a 100kmh zone, hence the cautionary approach.
Luppo Lipsham 👍🏾
Well spotted 😎🤘

Which is the best setting? I have a TPX 2 and I thought the police use the K band? if this is the case and the setting is NoK then does that mean you’re not going to get any alerts from the K band?
Hi, I couldn't say whether it's "the best" setting but I use HwyNoK mode which means I won't get alerts from K-band which includes fixed speed cameras, red light cameras, mobile camera vans BUT is also used by a huge array of other GPS/Navigation/Radar devices mobile and fixed which will completely overwhelm your radar alerts. I tried it briefly and it was not a great experience. None of the penalties for those enforcement-based K-band activations include demerit points and that is the thing I am most keen to avoid. What the HwyNoK setting will pick up is Ka-band which is used in Stalker Dual Radar units deployed in enforcement vehicles all over the country and will most definitely include demerit points if you are unlucky enough to be stopped and ticketed. I suppose in the end it comes down to whether you want alerts going off ALL the time or only want the most painful stuff to be brought to your attention as you are riding along. As always, it's your own decision. Cheers.
@@HughBeRiding Thanks mate that makes sense. I live just out of Cambridge and ride Raglan, Coro loop and the epic country roads we have down here and the only alerts I have got so far have been railway crossings and travelling behind some cars as it picks up the sensors. I would imagine motorways would be very different story. I appreciate your advice. Great videos!
thanks mate, glad you enjoy them
Thanks, Hugh. Happy to see you’re back with another great video 👍🏻
Cheers Ian, see you on the next one 😎🤘
