Helioscope PDX
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ก.ค. 2020
Helioscope PDX is a comic book artist and writer collective in Portland, Oregon, USA. Here you will find interviews, educational videos, and other content relating to and created by our studio members about the craft of making comic books.
Helioscope was founded in 2002 by 11 comics artists in Portland, Oregon. Portland had become a major hub for the comics industry, with nearly half a dozen publishers calling the area home, and the number of working artists in residence had also reached a new high.
A collective workspace is a great fit for the labor-intensive and collaborative nature of comics production, and within five years the studio's membership had doubled. Originally called Mercury Studio, the group became Periscope Studio in 2007 and expanded to a new location. In 2016, the studio (now composed of almost thirty active members) completed its final rebranding as Helioscope, and is incorporated as an LLC.

Dunno if you guys need a curmudgeonly old school ink slinger....
Thank you for sharing. I'm always looking to learn how to collaborate with artists. When I'm in the area I hope for an opportunity to visit the studio.
the free palestine sticker 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I found that when printing, the ink at the local printing shop is smooth and the black ink 'slides off'. Not sure why..
You put those storkes like swoosh swoosh❤
great tips!
Yogurt Lamp…^____^ Brilliant❤❤❤❤❤😊
Love this!!!
Helpful. Thank you for the post
Would think it would be hard to get much done with so many people there.
Have you lightly printed your pencils panels before you inked ?
ما اسم الطابعة التي تطبعون فيها ورقكم 👀
Canon Pixma Pro-100
Wonderful video. So nice to hear you both talking about Trekker!
Looks like your average progressive (woke) comic book company fromt the 2020s. If I would have started to work there, they probably would have fired me within a week, because I drew women sexy and men looking masculine.
DC, Marvelllll,.... waiting for another but! Nuff said w the first two!! Lol
6:57 Darren Auck had ZERO BUSINESS teaching at the Kubert School! ZERO!!!!
I hope to see myself one day work with you guys
What is the specification of the brush do you use??
Would your drybrush technique with dissolved edges work for the background (when you depict distant city)?
Brush tips are destroyed during ink dipping and on-palette mixing. The only way to preserve brush tips in painting/drawing is to dip the brush sideways only. Your trick with the jar lid is neat, but the lid is too narrow and the bristles will bend and split to soak in the ink. I use a short glass test tube, or the so-called "self-capped centrifugal vial tube", with v-shaped bottom. Both cost a few $. Put ink in it, attach it at 30-40 degrees to your desk like you do with the lid, and then dip your brush in it. You will never destroy or bend the tip, it will be perfectly straight. While removing the brush from the tube, press the brush sideways against the vial walls, to squeeze out excess ink, which drips back into the vial. When all work is done, cork the tube; ink is preserved and stored.
I love ❤ this studio setting ❤ thanks 👍
Great video! Are you printing out the pencils onto bristol at reduced opacity? Considering that as a hybrid approach - penciling traditionally, scanning, tweaking digitally, and then printing them out again for final traditional inks.
That method totally works! Me and some of the other studio mates have absolutely done that. I hope it works out for you!
Bravo 👏🏽
how do you transfer your sketches onto the bristol?
His is literally my dream job ❤…
Hello. This was very helpful. I would think that inking was a lost art. Thank you for showing us how it's done. :)
Hey Hellio, thank you for not going to the Ai way and thank you for doing TH-cam.i am back into drawing again when i draw i color in as i go, do you know why ? Do i like a finished picture? Do i like coloring Do i like both because I like to draw, or is it because when i was a kid, i was doing some doodling, and now I'm trying to make up for all that lors time??? If you know, let me know because I like to draw, but i also like to colr. Thank you ❤ Do you have any comic books 📚 out that i can pick up out right now on book shelves?
What's Eryk Donavan got in his syringe?
Look at all that magic!
These shops rock the Sketchy. TY!
How much of and angle do you have when you’re drawing
Sincere question here. It appears each artist is working on their own personal projects, or commissioned projects. With that said, is this a studio that artist can rent office space? Or is it mainly team based projects but you still have time for personal projects there?
Did Paul Guinan really draw all of that on an Intous??? 😱😱😱
1k of these views are from me
😂 thank you!
Your ink line is REALLY nice
This is such a fantastic video. Thank you!!
