Welcome to the lab!
Explore behind the scenes as a conservator restores antique book and paper items. You'll see the restoration of books, maps, drawings, and documents that are owned by individuals and institutions.
Learn about some of the specialized and modified tools that I use. You’ll even get to see decision making at the bench. Bonuses include ASMR, satisfying cleaning, and stunning before-and-afters.
I have a Certificate of Advanced Study in the Conservation of Library and Archival Materials from the University of Texas. SB&P has been making well-loved paper pieces last longer since 2012.
I hope you enjoy watching the process and learning more about book and paper conservation!

Stabilizing Original Sewing | Book of Hours with Parchment Textblock
See how I stabilized the original sewing on this partial book of hours (circa late 1200s - early 1400s) without disturbing the original sewing.
I discuss the problems and opportunities presented by the condition of this parchment text block. I explain why this minimally invasive method redistributes stress away from the original sewing, providing some protection.
I also show the fancy, custom housing I made for the item.

Where can i buy the glue remover thank you
Great work! I enjoyed watching and learned lots.
Hi, I found this absolutely fascinating and I watched the whole series in one go. It was really interesting to see the different techniques, tools and materials you used - and how many times you need to let something dry overnight!. I have some small books which have some tears to the leather (basically they have leather clasps that keep them shut - it is the clasp that tears). I'd be really interested if it is possible to 'fix' the tear by inserting some strengthening fabric into the tear (I think it is two sheets of leather sewn together - and securing that with glue - have you done any videos about issues like that? Also - to be clear - I am in the UK so won't be coming over to you (sorry :-( !)
Let me correct my previous post: Stupid me! The videos are actually together, just found them. Thank you for your videos and skills. Your channel is amazing!
It would be nice to have all the videos of this project restoration together and in order for us to follow the whole process...
Hi I really enjoy your work. Could you tell me where to get the mini scapulas from? And the wheat poultices. Thank you so much. I hope to see more of these shows in the future
This is so amazing love the videos. Hello from thomaston ga ..
What is the glue remover you are using?
I've been tasked with repairing damaged hymn books at church. Some of them have completely come apart. I've watched a few other videos on book repair but none compare with your meticulous detail; very useful for a novice like me. I'm having a difficult time finding supplies though and was wondering where you get that special linen for bookbinding, the paper for paper spine lining, PVA adhesive, and the heavy long fiber paper? None of the craft stores had book repair materials in stock so I've ordered some non-acid glue and bookbinder tape online but not sure if it's the right tape. I have a machine shop and for my milling machine, I have two 6 inch KURT like vices like you use to clamp books with.
Bit of boot polish on the covers to nourish, preserve and make-flexible. ??
This is an OUTSTANDING video - thanks for posting!
What consolidant do you recommended?
Is it possible to do this with the cover still intact, even if it's more difficult? The leather cover is in really good shape on my book, but the text block has separated completely, and needs the paper spine redone. (book is 1828, block is about 2" thick)
This is amazing, thank you! I'm repairing book-shaped leather-wrapped correspondence cases from the late 1800s-early 1900s with signiificant degradation to do (functional) restoration -- I and others enjoy writing with dip pens and ink. I'm using klucel-g and isopropyl alcohol.. do you happen to know if I can redye consolidated leather wrapping, or if you have any other recommendations of information for more info? I'm disabled and poor, otherwise I'd ordinarily try to find paid courses to learn more.
Pleasant voice, well learned, why did you stop creating? Sigh...
Good question.
Could she sound any more bored in her explanations
What is the cost to recover a book?
How much did it cost to repair this? How much did you charge?
I was very skeptical, first few videos, lol... but I see it now. Im willing to bet you are an expert at solving most any problem after jumping into this bugguh
wicked awesome! well done
WE DEMAND MORE CONTENT :) love your work! thank you for all you have shared thus far. take care.
You are like a wizard
Excellent. would love to see a video on you making one of those lovely enclosures.
Hello, teacher. I would like to ask you about the dye you used on the leather... Is it acrylic or what?
Very awesome results.
Your work is amazing and very professional.
Awesome work.
I would totally watch this on live stream too
Thanks for this, now I know how to fix my family bible.
So professional
Don't apologize... making videos is a TON of work, and it's very much appreciated!
I have a question... have you considered offering any classes or workshops in the future? I'm in Savannah, and I'm pretty much self-taught, which isn't the best situation. And I've been asked to do rare book repair (which I have turned down) since I don't want to foul up anything valuable. (I don't mind working on common, inexpensive books though). Thanks!
Sure don't like what was done....and not done to the leather!! I wouldn't have been happy. Someone would be doing a whole lot of explaining to me and justifying the work!
I'm wondering if leather conservation is taught, surely it must. Also wondering why the leather can't be conditioned to infuse more moisture into in and make it less brittle then from the inside reinforce it with thin pigskin which is supposed to be very very tough and great for those repairs. I've seen such things done on bags, jackets, toys, gloves...pretty much everything that has a flap or a weak spot but not a book. All those items were very old as well so age couldn't be why. Maybe the paper aspect makes it inappropriate? Maybe just never tried before but I can't imagine that? Thanks again for no music, that way I don't miss your commentary.
Thank you for not adding awful music to this video. I love music but somehow the worst of what can be produced, usually by computer, is added to videos.
Isn't that the truth? So many good videos get ruined by awful music.
Thanks for making these amazing videos , am learning so much from you. You’re so meticulous and passionate about your profession, you’re such a rare gem.
Where did yo get the large micro-spatula?
Love this. I am a novice Bible rebinder, but my passion is the old well used bibles and this page by page repair is invaluable info. Just the elevated boards to hold up the opened pages was something I’d not considered. So much good information. I wish I had the opportunity to apprentice in an environment like this.
That trick with the acetate and the micro spatula blew my mind. I love it. I like to use a palette knife, though.
I love your attention to detail and practiced hand. What kind of fiber paper do you use? What is that pultice, do you also make it? I love your vids!
Beautiful
How do I make that poltice?
Can the spine process be done essentially the same way with leather instead of the paper material you are using?
I hope you have more videos soon. I just found you.😢
I need definitions for words like "consolidant" and other terms you use...
So informative…I’d love to have the skill and confidence to do this to some of my ver old and precious Bibles!
Totally enjoyed and learned so much from this!
books for beginners!
I watched a different bookbinder who was demonstrating 3 types of corners. The turn down was one. Is that still a good way to bind the corners? It seemed more labor intensive.
